  • The Dam Busters is a 1955 British epic war film starring Richard Todd and Michael Redgrave. It was directed by Michael Anderson. The film recreates the true story of Operation Chastise when in 1943 the RAF's 617 Squadron attacked the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams in Nazi Germany with Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb.
The film was based on the books The Dam Busters (1951) by Paul Brickhill and Enemy Coast Ahead (1946) by Guy Gibson. The film's reflective last minutes convey the poignant mix of emotions felt by the characters - triumph over striking a successful blow against the enemy's industrial base is tempered by the sobering knowledge that many died in the process of delivering it.

Such a magnificent film. Filled with wit, pathos, excitement and real heroes. I genuinely wish our young people would study and then celebrate these and many many more men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

Each time Gibson saw or heard another of his Lancaster aircraft fall from the sky, he knew that another eight British airmen, people he knew very well, had just been killed.

Interesting, when Wallis found out what the cost of the raid was in terms of the lives lost of 617 Squadron he said he would never have set out on it had he known that would have happened.

THIS is real heroism. Not stupid fake superheroes, or Tom Cruise bombing "the enemy" without even articulating who they are or why they're being bombed. We need more reminders of what history was really like, and what it took to be a real man.

Is this historically accurate? Z-Zebra is shown here crashing almost at once. But although it's true the pilot (S/Ldr Maudsley) was never heard from again, I understand he was able to get some way back again in his damaged aircraft before finally being downed by enemy flak.

Far less of the full details were publicly known and it made for a far better script if you can get the reaction shot from Gibby when Maudslay goes down. Plus the optimistic assessment of Maudslay is far more dramatic if he crashes shortly after. It's taking a dramatic licence, for sure, but it works.

The timeline according to Max Hastings in his book 'Chastise - The Dambusters' (2019), which is perhaps the best on the subject, gives the following timeline:
01:45 Squadron Leader Henry Maudslay (Z-Zebra) makes unsuccessful attack on the Eder, his bomb overshooting the dam and exploding beneath his aircraft.
01:50 Pilot Officer Les Knight (N-Nuts) makes his successful attack on the Eder dam, earning himself the DSO, his navigator and bomb-aimer both the DFC.
01:53 Pilot Officer Lewis Burpee (S-Sugar) blinded by German searchlight and crashed into a garage during bombing run on the Eder with the loss of all eight crew.
01:54 Eder dam breached and 'DINGHY' signal sent.
02:36 Maudslay (Z-Zebra) shot down by flak with the loss of all crew near Emmerich on the Rhine, just three miles from the Dutch border.
I know it's been a few months since your post, but I thought you might still like to know.
NOTE: the times listed are the times during operation 'Chastise,' not any references to the video clip.

Z-Zebra was badly damaged during the Eder attack but didn't crash immediately as shown in the film. The aircraft made it as far as Emmerich near the German/Dutch border where it was shot down with the loss of the crew.

Movies like this were better when they were just filmed. This whole scene was created by bad (by todays standards) special effects.
