Nice video, didn’t know the history: I don’t recall using the older bits. The splines on the SDS PLUS chucks eventually give way in a well used drill, regular repair for me to do on drills used every day for about 3 years or more.
SDS was invented by Bosch in 1975. As Bosch is a German company, they named the chuck after the motions you use to put a bit in it: Steck (insert), Dreh (twist), Sitzt (fits) and later further developed under “Spannen durch System” or “clamping system,”. Today, Bosch uses the term Special Direct System internationally. In Australia most people say it stands for "Slotted Drive System" and personably I think that expanded acronym makes more sense.
Thanks for explanation on 'why' the change to use drive slots on SDS Plus. Has anyone found an adapter to use the original SDS bits with a SDS Plus drill? I have a sackful of unused Hilti bits but they are all the original style SDS. If I had a milling machine i would consider milling the slots; has anyone done that?
