    I grew a ton of cowpeas last summer and I didn't bother burying them. I just threw handfuls of dried black eyed peas on my raised beds. They grew just fine and they improved my soil so much that I am doing it again this year.

    Great video ❤!
    I guess I missed the screenshot of the banana plant 😂, kinda wanna see how that’s doing.
    I would love for you to explain the whole peanut thing though. You just put the whole thing in the ground and it grows? I think you said raw peanuts…
    So much material you have to cover for those of us still in the ‘baby stage’ of learning Florida gardening. 😉

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh man, I should have included the banana. It’s doing really well. And yes, you literally just stick the whole peanut with the shell in the ground about an inch down. I bought the raw peanuts in a bag near produce at Publix. I’m kicking myself for not filming it.

    I’m definitely working on my “set it and forget it garden”. In SE Louisiana we are coming off our second heat wave this summer and will be “cooling down” a bit for the 4th of July (crazy to say that)
    Hearing the hurricane talk takes me back to 2021 when I intentionally decided to go in to have my son 1 week before Hurricane Ida hit…I was already in early labor and fearful the atmospheric pressure change would send me over and I’d be birthing at home …so at 6cm dilated I strolled into the hospital to welcome him (1 day past him being preemie)…my moms house was wrecked 1 wk later with hurricane Ida and I had my mom, brother, and nanny (god mother) living with us (me and husband, our 1wk old and 3 older children.)
    Honestly, great memories were made but life was a mess 😂

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that sounds tough. It’s weird how the good and bad times intertwine in life. I remember when Hurricane Michael come through back in 2005 and I lost electric for 2 weeks. Pretty much my whole neighborhood left but my friends and I stayed and it was like having the whole world to ourselves for 2 weeks. Cold showers and eating at Golden Corral so we could have hot food. It was tough but I remember having a lot of fun with my friends. Like a non stop sleep over.

    Ummm, about those plant them and forget them summer crops, you can't totally forget to water them if you have them in containers. I may have lost an eggplant and two Cape Gooseberries....you know, fine when I saw them in the morning, then very very sad in the evening. This summer came in with a bang!
    The long beans and sweet potatoes in my community garden bed are lush and growing like mad. With the sweet potatoes literally covering the ground, even tomatoes, longevity, Okinawan and Egyptian spinach are all taking off again because the soil is completely shaded out. No weeds!

    I used to live in a temperate four season climate in the past. Peaches and other stone or pome fruits (apple, pear, quince) form most of their flower buds during the summer in the current year’s growth. It would be much better if you do not touch it during this time. Also pruning when in full growth might encourage more buds to break forming more branches that will not be mature enough for winter. I believe the zone you garden in may have sporadic frosts in late December and January, late growing shoots might be damaged. Prune only if branches are dead or broken. Cutting branches or “topping” trees during summer decreases the amount of future blooms and therefore fruits. Spring pruning or topping immature green shoots once the buds have sprouted is much better. When the branches get woody, next season’s flower buds start to form. In a climate like Florida it happens rather fast. Have a nice day.

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the information. My main purpose for doing it is to reduce the size of my tree since I’m on a small lot. I know that by topping, I’ll be reducing the output but it’s the trade off with my current size limitations. If I allow it to keep getting bigger, it will be harder and harder to maintain the small stature I’m looking for. David the good suggests this method for small gardens and there is a book “Grow a Little Fruit Tree” that describes this method. Definitely not for everyone but I’m going to give it a shot and see if I like it. Appreciate the comment. It makes sense what you said

    I've been thinking of trying a different kale and spinach to grow than the usual. Would this kale be beginner friendly? I am helping my neighbor start and learn how to garden. She gave up because she was using colder climate rules and it got her thinking she was bad at plants. I've been sharing my harvest with her and showing her it's possible. So far she's only done flowers I've seeded for her but we're almost done building her last bed. She has some health issues that don't allow her to absorb all the nutrients she takes in so super foods are high in the list. Id love for her and I to try this variety together for the first time. 😊

    I have never grown Ethiopian Kale. It would be nice to have some greens growing during this heat. I don't really do too much planting during the Summer. I have plenty of room now that I pulled the green tomatoes off after I watched your video. I didn't know they would turn red if they were totally green. The bug pressure was too much and I was losing too many so I did pull them.
    My seminole pumpkins are not doing bad and this is my first time trying them. My Everglades tomatoes which doesn't get eaten by bugs is always producing. Sweet potatoes will not be ready for another few months. Now that the tomatoes are gone I can sit back and relax as the rest doesn't have too much pest pressure. Will start again at the end of August but for now it will be a welcome break.

    Yeah the only things that are doing well for me are Roselle Hibiscus, Lima beans are growing but are not forming pos. My Thai soldier green bean have been dying off and I don't know why. I have more seedlings that I planted and they seem to be doing better. I have swiss chard growing but they have little tiny speckles all over the leaves and I think my eggplant has blight or some sort of disease. My pepper are doing okay but not great. My passion Vine isn't doing so great either but I let the caterpillars have it. I can't help it, I love 🦋. I have sweet potato growing but they are not getting full sun. Not sure why everything is failing. Oh well. My olra is the only thriving by any means. My strawberries have slowed down and leaf miners have taken oven. 😂😂 I would love to try Ethiopian kale since I can't get any greens to grow. I also have arugula but something is eating it. Not sure what. I think it might be rabbits. I am surprised because it has a strong taste. my moringa is the only green going for me. Your garden looks awesome!

    • @HomegrownFloridaZ9a
      @HomegrownFloridaZ9a  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely sounds like you got some stuff going on. The greens are not surprising given the heat. Same with the strawberries but they will bounce back in fall. As for the beans eggplant peppers and sweet potatoes those should be able to handle this weather well. Since it seems to be across the whole garden, I’m thinking either too much or not enough water or a nutrient issue. Either of these will stress the plants and weaken them. Try upping your fertilizer schedule for a couple weeks. Do a finger poke into the dirt to check for moisture for the next few days. If it’s dry every day, it’s under watered. If it stays moist through those several days, wait to water until it dries out completely. Feel free to email me if you want to chat (it’s in the about me section of my page)

    Me, me, me, pick me :) I am a new gardener this summer season. I started some seeds back in late March and have spent every day since May hand picking and squishing little green caterpillars off my zucchini and yellow squash plants. I have learned that it's not the best time for these in SW Florida and I should have started earlier. But I will not give up. I keep trying to grow lettuce indoors from my store bought scraps, but I don't get much more than a handful before it dies or bolts. I love salad, and I eat it almost every day. I have recently purchased several varieties of greens to try to grow in the coming months. Hi Petrina, great video. I still have my tomatoes too. Mine are in a grow bag so I moved them into a more shaded spot last month and they are still producing. I topped them off with some fresh compost. I swear I'm feeling more and more like a real gardener, lol. I'm making my own compost, yay me. I did have hornworms attack my tomatoes, I had to do some research to find out what to do. I had to take them off by hand, a little freak out, but I did it. It hit my everglades the hardest, but I think they're coming back.
    I'm neglecting my native flower garden, my pineapples & my everglades. They are the only things planted in the ground. They are doing great. I grow everything in grow bags so they need to be watered more often. My sweet potatoes & black beans are doing so great. I didn't know how much they would grow, it's awesome.
    I would love to try the kale. I think I might try the peanuts & cow peas. I just bought 2 more grow bags. I swear, I'm hooked. I've made lots of mistakes but learned from each one & did better next time. Thank you for all your encouragement & knowledge. You have inspired me to be better. Keep up the good work.

I've never tried Ethiopian Kale but want to especially after your taste test!

      That will definitely give you a head start. I’ll be starting mine at the end of the month (unless I start getting that itch to get started faster lol)

    I want to grow cowpeas but I hear that the beans can be toxic to chickens!

    I am so glad I found you. I am in Central Florida and I restarted gardening this year. I did not know about how to plant the sweet potatoes and I just popped for sweet potatoes from last November into the ground. I now have a front yard full of sweet potato leaves. Which I have found out are pretty tasty and goes well with the iceberg lettuce I pick up at the store.

    Is there a better time to trim plants? I was thinking I would do it in the next few days in the morning.

      I usually prune my trees and herbs in the late afternoon. I wait for them to be in complete shade and then I do it. That gives them until morning before the sun are hitting them. If they struggle when you prune them, try watering them too. If you are pruning greens and you want to eat them, harvest as early in the morning as possible. They are less bitter that way. 💚

      @@katherinekalinowski1967 oh okay. I would say late afternoon is best but early morning works too. Mid day is tough on the plants so I would avoid that.

      I get those too. I just let them run wild. Eventually good bugs show up and create balance. The plants take a beating but it encourages a balanced ecosystem so less work for me.
