I'm in central Alabama, zone 7B. The heat is still on with temps in the mid to upper 80s making germination difficult at best. I need to wait for a break in the weather to try Brunswick, or Hilton Cabbage again, golden beets, and another succession of turnips. I did get carrots to sprout in a shady area of the garden. My late Nagasaki Cabbage, and Pak Choi are doing well. My Komatsuna seedlings are suffering with the heat, and my Yellow Heart Winter Choy growth is stunted. I am hoping my lettuce doesn't bolt. If the weather doesn't cool soon, I will lose my kohlrabi, Komatsuna, Pak Choi, and winter choy (bolting to seed). When the temperature drops to 80F, or below, I will plant garlic cloves, sow more turnip seeds, and beet seeds. I'm trying to get tomato seeds to sprout, 4 Early Girl and 4 Tiny Tim to see if I can get them to survive and produce through the winter. So far, only 3 of 8 seeds have sprouted. It is too hot for them too. with most days 87F, or warmer.
My trick to getting them to sprout is to start them inside and then move them to a shaded area outside once they sprout. From there, I wait till they are about 4 inches tall and then I put them in the beds with a generous 3-4 inches of mulch (preferably grass clippings because they hold a lot of water) and that usually allows me to start seedlings in the low 90s. Not ideal but down here it could be months before we get into the low temps.
Lots of great information! I am going to figure out my Strawberries 🍓, I am, I am! I am determined! The lizards 🦎 love mine 🥴. I have beautiful plants, never get to eat my berries. Interesting 🤔 that you are going to container garden tomatoes 🍅 - a few weeks ago I planted seeds, for perennial flowers, to grow through winter so they will be hardier for Spring planting. Never thought about veggies. We have 2 growing places, Zone 8a and 8b, so Im trying to figure all that out as well. I just finished my 2nd Spring and began my 2nd Fall. I've learned so much my head is spinning 🤯😂. Thanks for all your info and tips. Happy and safe travels!
There is always so much to learn. It’s never ending which is one of the things I love about it. Can’t wait to hear how the flowers do. I’ll have to try that
Hope you are having a wonderful vacation! I traveled all over the USA back in the 80s. We have a BIG beautiful country! ENJOY! I went to a master gardener talk here in Volusia county and they said "strawberries just wont grow here". I refuse to believe that so gonna try. My question is on the cuttings. Isnt it easier to just grow from seed IE Cranberry or Roselle Hibiscus? I love mine and first year growing so dont know if I should do propagation or seed for next year. Your the BEST Patrina...thanks for all the work you do that I am to lazy to research!
If you want to grow something, it doesn't hurt to try. There may be reasons why strawberries may work for you, even if they don't work for most in your area
I like to do seed for roselle and cuttings for cranberry hibiscus. Roselle tends to get bad powdery mildew so I don’t do cuttings for that one. For the cranberry hibiscus, I like cuttings just because it’s a faster growth rate but I’ve done seeds in the past too. Try both ways and see what you like better. What was your favorite place to visit during your travels?
Thank you for all of your information. I was wondering why I was not receiving notification of your posts. I did not have all posts selected. I have corrected that. Again, thank you for your posts.
Ohhh thank you for such great information. We live on the East Coast of Central Florida. Thinking of harvesting our sweet potatoes in a couple of weeks. Really wanting to try Snap Peas this year!!
I'm curious have any of you ever received any seeds I was told I won several months ago and never received a thing and when I questioned it I still never received anything😮
Hi Sonia. I’ve responded to you multiple times on your comments and mentioned you in my videos. I just need you to email me at petrinahomegrownflorida@gmail.com so I can get your address to send your seeds to you. I’ve been holding onto them waiting to hear from you.
This is our best time of year to grow. You can grow all the cold weather crops like broccoli cauliflower cabbage kale lettuce peas beets carrots spinach… all kinds of things. Strawberries would be good too. I have a video that comes out at the beginning of every month that shows exactly what to plant and other projects for the month for our area. There should be a playlist on my channel. Local nurseries are nice if you have some nearby but I usually just do Lowes or HD if I’m going to buy starts
Could you please tell me the names of the cold hardy tomatoes. I got Rosella but not the name of the other one. Ŵhen did you start them and when did you put them outside? Do you think they'll grow well in the warmer weather? Thank you.
They were Rosella Purple and Slietz. I started them in August and they grew all winter. I kept them in pots. I found both of these to cause a lot of splitting so they wouldn’t do very well with my summer rains.

We recently moved from Western Washington to Central Florida. Best decision ever. Enjoy your time there.
Thanks so much!

That’s crazy. My family and I went to Washington state for the summer also. We have family in Rochester, WA.
It’s a beautiful state. Did you see all the apple trees?
Hoping you are enjoying your trip! Happy Camping.
We are having an awesome time. Thanks!

Snap peas do great this time of year and they taste so good homegrown!
To save money, look for perennial substitutes for annual vegetables. This will, also, save you work.
I need to do that for sure. They are so much easier
I like your shed....where did you get it?
It’s a lifetime shed. I bought it from their website and we put it together. It took a few days but we love the way it came out.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a thank you for the reply! Enjoy camping!
What strawberry variety do you plant?
I like chandler best but I’ve heard jewels do well here too.

We are late getting our raised garden beds going. What can we plant in November? We are in Inverness. Where do you recommend for start purchasing?

They are Chandler strawberries 🍓
