Half the time the videos don't mention much after 'a recovery'. Most of the video is about multiple organ failure and suddenly weeks or days after the person get's discharged and I am wondering about their quality of life after almost dying. I wish they added some more information.

My son went to the gym for the first time. That evening, he told me his urine was dark. I knew to rush him to the hospital. His urine was the colour of cola! The doctors said he had the most spectacular vase of rabdo they had ever seen. Thankfully, because we got him medical care quickly, there was no permanent damage to the kidneys.

@swl9104 I have no idea. All I know is he was doing the same weights as his friend who went to the gym regularly. The gym had an open day to celebrate the wedding of Harry and Meghan, so anyone could walk in off the street and work out without an induction. It maybe wasn't the smartest thing to do.

I highly recommend trying to get rid of your addiction by slowly reducing the amount you have. Perhaps every 3 days have 5% less of what you normally would?
If you are going to try this, don't go cold turkey (instantly stopping altogether) since that's dangerous - but slow and gradual progress is good
I suffer from rhabdomyolisys. Let me tell you, my urine day one looks like a fine red wine. I can't move, can't breathe properly. I am in a state of pure paralysis when it occurs. Funnily enough, I am actually out of the hospital 1 day and watching this video. Shit is more painful than breaking bones. I pray to God none of you have to go through this torture.
Edit: Unfortunately it is a genetic disease and I have no possible cure other than tolerance to stress on my muscles.

I am not the original commenter. I wouldn't exactly have worded it in that way, but it is very important to drive home the seriousness of the condition by saying "made a recovery" vs "made a full recovery".
Of course I wish that every one of these patients would make a full recovery, but the reality is that they won't.
Sometimes, things like this distinction are needed to add gravity to what Dr. Bernard is saying.
Actions have consequences, and sometimes your mistakes follow you through your whole life, if you are lucky enough to survive them.

@@a.deadgirl I dunno, I'm more of a function over form guy myself, so what someone or something looks like isn't as relevant as what someone or something operates like.
So, that my physician at the hospital having body builder muscles wasn't of relevance to me, that she had a clue how to keep the treatment team of cardiologist, pneumonologist and endocrinologist working together to get me breathing well again was the priority, not hair style or lifting technique (actually, the muscle build is more of an orthopedic surgeon's build). Went in breathing around 60 breaths per minute, due to mild pneumonia, left stable, breathing room air comfortably and while still dropping weight, now I'm dropping about a pound per week, rather than ten pounds per week and that'll taper off as the thyroid is wrangled the rest of the way under control.
Just as well from my seat, as I dealt with plumbing, structural and infectious diseases in my military career, dealing with things that aren't plumbing was and remains well above my pay grade.

This actually is very sad to me because academic life creates such a psychological pressure in our minds that we do absurd things to pass our finals or finish important assignments.
I remember one time I had a really important test in the next morning, so because I wanted to be extra prepared I didn't stop studying when night time came. I decided to stay awake as long as I could to keep studying and writing small notes in paper to make me memorize the contents. Because I was getting sleepy I made some black strong coffee to give more energy. My mug isn't a small mug, it's 500ml. I drank two mugs of coffee that night.
This is nowhere near what happened in this video, but I remember when I stopped and laid in my bed to sleep (at 4am and needed to wake up at 6am) I couldn't. I was a little shaky and as much as I forced myself to keep my eyes closed to try to rest, there was not way. I did not sleep that night, just stayed rolling in my sheets and then my alarm clock rang. This is something I'll never do again.
I feel you, I did that the first two year of uni, then I learned that I am more performant if I sleep prior to an exam. It is also the midterm period, good luck if you have any !

@@LenHarms I did great! But because I didn't sleep at night the rest of that day after the test was lost, I was simply too tired after the effect of caffeine went away. Slept while in class and slept more after heading home. Today, it doesn't matter how much I feel the need to study or finish an assignment, I will not neglect sleep.

Caffeine withdrawal is one of the worst experiences I've ever had. It was brutal. I'm glad I went through it, though, because I've had a lot more control over that addiction since then.

I used to consume 1300-1500mg of caffeine per day in order to keep withdrawal at bay. I had to chug six espresso shots of freshly ground Death Wish coffee in order to feel any kind of sensation from it. I was literally flirting with overdosing from caffeine on a daily basis.

You'll also notice that you see the same organs come back in these videos because there's only so many things these organs do.
It's not like we have the entire periodic table in our bodies, the vast majority of what we have are organic compounds, minerals and salts, and some trace elements like metals. When people do something extreme, the natural processes gets distorted, so the common compounds in our bodies are affected, and the organs which deal with those compounds are affected.
These people weren't deficient before they did something they shouldn't have, the deficiency is caused by the natural processes going haywire.

What does the 12 mean on my coffee pot? Because that is how much I drink to get started everyday. I have often drunk 2 or 3 pots of coffee in an afternoon.
Look for energy drinks and other sodas. They often are "stronger" than coffee.

So I'm not sure if he actually had V-fib, or PEA, but he could've had both as he did mention he coded 3 times. Also, A-fib isn't immediately dangerous, but can cause a stroke, and congestive heart failure. You most likely know this, but just wanted to point out for anybody that is reading through the comments and doesn't know this.

When I overdosed on caffeine, I turned into a vegetable. I could only move my eyes, still wondering why that happened. Luckily I was at the hospital by the time that was happening so I felt ok after a couple of hours.

I’m a medical student myself but I’m by no means an expert though.
Also it always blows my mind when I hear stories of people doing things like this. Drug education is abysmal in this country and the rest of the world. People always think “I don’t do drugs so why should I learn about them?” Then they do things like this. People also have a mindset of legal = harmless and that is so far from the truth. He really is lucky to be alive. A basic understanding of how drugs work in our bodies and knowledge of the different types and their affects is invaluable.

I was once home alone in 40C fever.
I woke up feeling so shit. I went to puke my stomach empty and after getting in kitchen I lost all coordimation and fell on ground breaking a drinking glass and sliding door.
Unsure how long I was lying there, but I somehow managed to crawl back in bed.
I keep thinking what if it was something more severe and help would have arrived only after two days. To this day I have no idea what it was. Probably some high fever related blackout.
What scares me even more after all these years is that I was one of those "I will just sleep it off"-people.
Was lucky that for me it indeed was something to just sleep off.
one time I blacked out and collapsed in the bathroom hitting my head on the sink as I went down. when I woke up I was so weak and shaky it took me ten minutes to drag myself out the room and up the stairs. it never happened again and I still have no idea wtf caused it.
I catched the flu or something once in Morocco. I knew diarea plus vomiting and sweating is very dangerous and i might Fall into coma/ sleep at anytime.
To survive i smh crawled down the Hotel. Lucky found a nice taxi driver who brought me to the hospital. I got treated. And recovered very fast After some injection.
They knew exactly what it is and how to treat it.

I used to have recurrent episodes where I would almost black out for similar reasons, and I found it useful to always keep a sports drink (not energy drink, they are very different) i could quickly grab from the fridge. If it ever does happen again, do try to see if you have anything like that on hand

I distinctly remember an overheard conversation at the University of Chicago with one guy asking another how much caffeine you need to OD and describing the insane quantity of coffee and caffeine pills he'd had over the past few days. The other guy was like "I think you might actually be in danger." Hope he was alright in the end . . .

I'm a fairly big guy, and I've consumed 600-700mg of caffeine in a day. No problems bc that's a real rarity, once every few years type thing. I have to imagine doing so regularly would be a big problem... This kid knocked out around 3GRAMS of caffeine.
