I noticed that the frequency of customers coming back for another dog also increased as the spawn level went up. Considering how dark the game's implications are, it makes me suspect that the customers' dogs aren't living so long after they buy...
That's uhh.. pretty much true.
The desire for cuter trait has sacrifice the health of the dogs. The higher you go, the "cuter" they are, but also the lower their health is. And that's what happening in real life, with these cross mutation breeding has caused a lot of trouble.
Us humans only care about the cuteness, without realizing the implications of those breeding, and this game show it.

@@hamizannaruto stuff like that is why im a big fan of larger dogs that are far more natural, take poodles. Im sure they have some issues in the show world, but generaly poodles as a breed are hella healthy, with their only real issues (as long as they arent neglected) being kidney problems later in life and some eye issues. Their trimmed, fancy coats stem back to their old hunting use, covering organs and joints while allowing them to swim safely without being dragged down by fur or freezing from the cold. The trims have, of course, been accentuated over time for shows, but theyre still quite natural and good for them! Theyre a naturally gorgeous breed, and theyre one of my biggest obsessions. Theyre smart, and overall friendly breeds. I cant understand why people even want pugs, and any time i see any, i just hope to the stars that whoever the dog belongs to knows how expensive they are to care for in vet bills and makes sure theyre cared for in the best ways possible. I dont agree with the breeding to make them pudgy, but the ones that exist do deserve the best love they can get.
Also, im very happy that in some countries theyre pushing to breed back the original pug features (longer snout, smaller eyes, thinner body) by breeding them with healthy mutts!
@@exist4046 Heinz-57 dogs are the way to go, if I'm being honest. Some of them do have issues, but are overall healthier and better behaved.

I recently saw a video about these "dog factories", where they raise dogs in terrible conditions, far worse than what we see in this game, just so they could sell them to pet shops. I got the same vibes coming from it.

The level 8 dogs have a disturbing feature in their sprites... they shake almost uncontrollable. Implying due to inbreeding that dog is most prone to seizures.
Isn't that just when they are eating? They look about as still as the other dogs when they are standing idle.

@Smol Gal The game plays like one of those combine 2 identical things to get a better thing clicker game, not like say a Tamagotchi or other pet raising game. The intent of this specific game is to show how breeding dogs for cuteness leads to worse lives for those dogs due to inbreeding and deformities (higher level dogs are slower than lower level dogs and struggle to get near food, Level 8 dogs look diseased even when 'healthy', Level 9 dogs appear to be undead.)

This game is just pug simulator... breeding dogs to be "cute" with giant eyes, short legs, and unhealthy as sin.
This feels like showing us how we genetically messed up dogs.
Now they suffer from a myriad of diseases. Because of ourselfish desires of just wanting cute dogs.
I feel bad when I see pugs, bulldogs, chihuahuas, etc. They are so genetically sorted and modified, suffering from hereditary diseases such as bowleg, arthritis, heart disease. Dogs are pretty and cute enough without inbreeding!
And it's all for nothing because cats have always been, will always be, significantly cuter. You want a "cute" dog? Yeah, that's called a cat.

Okay before I finish this video, I'm predicting that the "breeding dogs for more cuteness" is what's going to go horribly wrong, they're gonna end up super deformed and grotesque looking and it's gonna be a commentary on how selective breeding can permanently mess up an entire dog breed's physiology.

It's a jab at puppy mills and eugenics that starts low-key and ramps up as time goes on.
Back in the day, selective breeding was intended to create healthy and strong dog breeds like the German Shepherd. As they've been selectively bred for show dogs, they have been given a steeper slope to their rumps and hip dysplasia is a serious problem in that line.
Y'know, this is actually a very interesting message for a game.
I feel like it might be about overbreeding. And how us humans breed dogs to appear cuter, with shorter legs and stumpy snouts. But they are slower, live shorter lifes and are more prone to getting sick. You notice that the level 1 dogs are way faster and don't get hungry as fast, while the later levels are slower and get hungry faster. You are basically creating pugs.
@DuckyTin I don't really see a problem with Labs and Dalmatians as breeds, i was talking more specifically about breeds more on the extreme side of things. Like how uncomfortable it is to look at a pug's skull compared to a husky skull, or how all bulldogs must be born through a c section because their heads are too big to be born normally.
@DuckyTin Ironically, the genetic diversity brought to the offspring from a lab and dalmation having puppies together would be a godsend. Far better for the puppies than pure-breeding, to be honest. Pure breeding has led to no end of suffering for many puppies and dogs, so even though I'm opposed to "designer crossbreeds" and other for-profit breeding, I do support genetic diversity being added to stagnant gene pools, especially after decades of pure-breeding causing various health issues for the breeds as a whole.
I'd rather adopt a mutt than buy a pure-breed. Breeders can run a wide gamut between loving owners who supplement their income with one or two litters every few years, all the way to degenerate scum who expect their bitch to get pregnant every time she possibly can so they can sell her puppies for a premium as their sole source of income.
@@Marcos-vo5cv So, funny fact, bulldogs can be born normally. Their main problem with whelping is that they get distracted too easily by the first puppy and forget to push out the others. They are at a higher risk for getting stuck due to their heads, but less than other breeds, such as the Boston Terrier who is in a far worse boat due to the fact that having very narrow hips is the breed standard. These are much narrower proportionally than a bulldog's.
Why haven't you heard about this? Because Adam Ruins Everything is a shit show that barely does any research and most people talking about this stuff are just parroting it instead of looking into it.

And I do know about the suffering of other brachycephalic breeds, but i used pugs and bulldogs as examples because they are the most common to talk about. You may not have heard of the guy, but the whole "bulldogs can only give birth via c-section" is directly from him. And he is also the one to hit the pugs hard. They are a mess of a breed, don't get me wrong, but there are breeds in worse shape with almost no attention being paid to them, like the pekingese, who ironically most resemble the dog breed in this game. They came to the US looking like modern pugs with more fur and were bred until their faces were fully flat, their legs deformed and twisted, and their spines wrecked. 30 years ago they were considered the nightmares of inbreeding but they are totally ignored nowadays because they are not the "in" monstrosity, even though things never got better for them.
A week late to the party, but I'd like to add that I think the Lvl. 9 dog being a "skeledog" is a representation of how some people see dogs more like an object than a living creature. In contrast to the lower level dogs (which are faster, thus seem more lively), skeletons are associated with death, or on this specific case, the lack of life: the dogs aren't life to be cherished, they're seen as trophies with huge eyes and short legs. Owners don't even care about the personality, just the looks of the trophy.

i think this game is about how horrifying the world of dog breeding and other breeding is, pugs for example were not made naturally and were made to to look cute even though their faces make it hard for them to breath, their bodies causes a lot of health problems, they were made to make money and their only payment is to suffer, spider ball pythons were bred and born with brain problems making them stumble and not do things correctly making their lives hard to survive and people who don't know what's going on think it's 'cute', i don't hate any of the animals like this i just hate how they were brought into this world just to evolve to make it hard to live, it's like if babies were forced to evolve with plastic bags over their heads, man i'm not even going to touch the topic of teacup animals, sites that sell teacup dogs and their descriptions make me sad

I’ve seen that “trash can ending” thing in real life. It’s horrible and the context I saw it in was due to shelter dogs having to be euthanized due to no one adopting them or helping to spay the stray dog population. This is a serious problem that an unfortunately low amount of people are addressing and taking action on.
God that must have been traumatizing, I imagine when things like that happen they don't even really think about what they are actually throwing away, I mean, the bare minimum should be cremation or burial, they deserve respect in their death, not a God damn trash can, they aren't a banana peel they are a deceased pet.
@@lilydragon2129 It was a shelter that hadn’t had enough room for proper organization or transportation of the corpses and they were disgusted and heartbroken at the fact they had to do it too. It’s still awful, but some places just have no choice because there’s so little help being given

I'm glad someone is bringing attention to the fact that even though some people may find some traits (like bigger eyes, shorter noses, shorter legs, or being overweight) cute that it's not always good for the dogs.

There's one video about pugs by Cynical Reviews addressing that issue.
I had a feeling the game was going to take this route, I kind of wish they had used some real examples of dog breeds in the design and shown how the genetic issues which cause certain dogs to be desired get worse over time (for example how pugs were bred to have flat faces which results in respiratory issues). But overall I think it's an interesting (possible?) commentary how a lot of dog breeders don't care about the issues dogs have as a result of breeding and exploit traits that are overall harmful for a breed to possess.
I mean there are Retro Pugs, as they are called, which are bred to be healthy again.
So pugs can still be cute and healthy as well, if we support them :3

That's interesting. I did a little bit of research on Retro pugs and here's kind of what I found out about them (rephrased):
A retro pug is a mixture of a Pug and Jack Russell Terrier (this practice is to avoid getting the flat face of a pug to prevent respiratory issues) - the name is based on the fact they look how pugs used to (before the breeding lead to the pure-bred pugs we know today), while some are healthier than regular pugs (due to the mix), it's not guaranteed that they will inherit the jack russell snout/ in some instances they have the same issues as pugs due to the genes inherited. While mix breeds are often assumed to be less likely to be unhealthy - in instances where breeding is controlled (two specific pure-breeds being bred to form a new breed or subcategory of a breed) it is possible for offspring to inherit multiple genetic health conditions from the parents (e.g. a retro pug is capable of inheriting skin problems from the pug parent, but dental problems from the jack russell parent). Regardless it's a step in the right direction, but it won't stop pugs from being bred and it won't be a guarantee the dogs bred are healthy (mind you any dog can have health issues, it's just best to avoid further breeding that will lead to breeds becoming more unwell).
This is heartbreaking. My mom and stepdad own an English Bulldog called Fudge and it's saddening to see how much health conditions they have. I don't support it at all but my stepdad really wanted an English Bulldog. The dog's former family gave him away to my mom and stepdad due to moving into a no pets allowed area. They didn't tell my mom about the dog's cleft pallette or the fact that he had to be taken into the vet to get it operated when he was a puppy but never was. It left my mom paying for the operation and getting all the medical attention the dog needed. He was practically neglected. The former family must've thought they were getting a cute flat nosed English Bulldog only to be bombarded with health problems. When the opportunity to give him away was there they took it. This is why I don't support these types of breeds that suffer. I own a moggy tabby cat named Forest and sure he isn't a pure bred cat but he's extremely healthy and happy.
Man if you also notice in terms of puppy mills, the higher the level dog (especially level 8) they start to shake while they move around. They also just look.. miserable. Like yeah they’re cute but like they’re not as happy looking as the level 1 dogs.

Did you know : breeding the same breed of a dog together have a inbreeding effects, such as weakened immune systems and more autoimmune diseases. Inbred dogs seem to get sicker from common causes more often than other dogs, such as catching colds.

Yes purebred dogs usually have a higher COI which results in an increased risk of congenital diseases, but responsible breeders will cultivate their bloodlines and set breeding goals in such a way as to avoid this. It's also our responsibility as buyers to make sure we support such breeders. If someone is looking to buy instead of adopt for whatever reason, please make sure to do some in-depth research on the breeders you look at first!
Actually not true. Responsible breeders health check their dogs and don’t breed ones that are sick. What this game is getting at is irresponsible puppy mills

This was like Can Your Pet in terms of deceptiveness, but also reminded me of that one clicker game where you eventually get bloody globs of cat fur from the money machine after someone kills the cat you were sending out to find money...that are somehow worth more than the regular money. Also this is definitely commentary on puppy mills and the severe inbreeding that causes a ton of health problems in certain dog breeds as other commenters have pointed out

Rather than being about puppy mills it seems more about designer dogs and breeding traits we find pleasing but cause serious health issues, the example being stubby legs making it hard for them to walk while the larger eyes made it harder for them to eat.

Designer dog breeding and backyard breeding/puppy mills are one in the same. Crossbreeds that are bred for nothing but the sake of being cute are usually genetic and temperamental disasters... see doodles.

I think the skeleton dog is supposed to represent level 9 dogs being so unhealthy they're practically the walking dead.

I'm really glad they didn't go over the top, or sneak in anything overly freaky, it really made the message shine through.
There IS a problem with today's pet owners, and it's that they value "aw, look at how cute this is" over their pet's life. Legs so short it has trouble walking, faces so squished they have problems eating, these things are seen as *cute*, but it's a painful life for the pet everyone "wants".

It's meant to be sad, or disturbing, but I can't help but laugh uncontrollably at the dogs magnet fusing, and the constant food sounds.

This is a really good message. It hammers in the message pretty well at the "cuter dogs = more money" part. It also shows dogs that are, in fact, not cute in any way- such as the skeleton dog or the dog covered in sores- and calls them extremely cute. This is pretty accurate to people's responses to the awful mutations some dog breeds have, like pugs. It's not cute to make their face so short they can't breathe and their eyes pop out of their sockets. It's terrifying. Imagine those same traits on a human being. Or imagine a wolf with a pug face. It's not cute, it's not happy, it's sad. Breeding pets to begin with is wrong, if there's so many in the pet trade without homes already. Inbreeding them is even worse. And inbreeding them to intentionally bring out their most unhealthy, horrific mutations.. is the worst. People tell mothers not to eat or drink or even go near MANY things just to avoid harming their child through disease and mutations. And here we are breeding dogs to be unhealthy just because it's 'cute,' and throwing away the ones that aren't cute. All dogs are adorable, even if they're the ugliest dog in the world. If you need your dog to have tiny legs and a tiny nose to love it, you don't want a dog- you want a toy. Dogs are COMPANIONS. Companions make you happy regardless of how they look.
Please, if you get a dog, adopt. Same with cats, or any other animal that is possible to adopt. And when you do, please get the one that has the lowest odds of finding a home. Get the ugliest, or the oldest, or the unhealthiest- anything. Just make their life a happy one. And get your animals fixed! Even if there's no animals for it to breed with around it, especially in female cats, fixing them can eliminate some health issues. Remember, you're removing an entire body part, which means one whole body part less to get injured or catch illnesses.

Edit: this game did a really good job at showing some of the "cute" traits that we keep perpetuating that are actually quite harmful. The stubby little legs that corgis have cause all sorts of back problems (chrondrodysplasia), the excessive skin folds that pugs have often are not kept clean and get infected (pyoderma), the giant eyes that shih tzus have often develop glaucoma because the intraocular pressure is too great.... and breeders make BANK off of all of this. Overall interesting game!
My mom loves shih-tzus. Poor babies, suffering for the sake of “cuteness”. True cuteness is the happiness of the dog itself. A dog should be happy and healthy, that truly being the peak cuteness. Yes I find the “intended cuteness” cute but I’d rather take happy healthy dogs over them suffering.
Very elegant use of mechanics to communicate the message. The highlight for me is how the player might not notice that the dogs are getting slower if not for the need to physically walk to the food dish, allowing the lower level dogs to clearly display their speed in comparison to the higher level ones.
When you mentioned how "higher level" dogs lost health faster, I knew exactly where this game was going
I had a feeling it would be about dog breeding going wrong. I just didn't expect skeleton dogs in the end.
I used to have a British Shorthair cat. I know people find them cute because of their flat face and virtually non-existent nose, but that's just the outside. On the inside my cat was an asocial weirdo and had difficulty breathing. Rather than play, she would spend most of her time staring outside windows. I had a lot of pets but she was the only super weird one. If you want a pet, don't get pure breed animals, get yourself a mutt or mixed breed animal, they are much healthier and much happier. Also, visit an animal shelter before pet shot first, there are a lot of older animals waiting for new owners, they deserve better.
Wow, I'm surprized that british shorthairs have such problems, given that american/domestic shorthair is pretty much just the name used at the vet's for "found it on the street"
There are actual pedigree american shorthair breeders, but i often see the name used just for random cats lol
Oooh, so the twist is real life. It's like puppy mill breeding and how we breed for 'cute' features (which are literally just mutations & deformities half the time) and create breeds with an excess of health issues and poor quality of life due to things like breathing issues and back pain
Is it odd that I find traits more similar to huskies, malamutes, and wolves to be the most adorable? Like, even if pugs didn't have breathing problems and such, I can't stand small stubby legs or flat faces. I would want my companion to be capable of keeping stride with me and smart enough to keep me safe (I'm on the autism spectrum and have anxiety issues, so a medium or large breed would help me feel safer than a yippy little ankle-biter).

I could see it as a sports-type game that highlights unrealistic body/beauty standards for men and all the of horrible things that they do to achieve those standards, like doping, unhealthy diets, dehydrating to the point of fainting for that "bulging muscle" look... Would be an interesting commentary and shed light on things that should definitely be more talked about.
There is a breeding project out there that actually seems beneficial. They're breeding dogs with the appearance of dire wolves, a chill personality, and great health! If only all breeding projects were that responsible.

Purebred dogs always carry genetic defects with them as a result (such as poodles having cataracts and brachycephalic breeds having respiratory issues, like the pug), living shorter lives. Mongrels, on the other hand, live longer and are stronger, as genetic diversity means that defective genes are less likely to manifest themselves, but people aren't as interested and there are many mongrels in the streets wanting love..._
Kind of disappointed with the level nine dogs. I do think there’s two layers of meta commentary here though. The first is of course about the inbreeding of dogs and the detriment to their health. The second is definitely about the disposability of pets in general not just specifically dogs. Any animal that over stays their welcome or out grows being cute getting discarded and the owner buying a new, cuter one.
So far it's pretty realistic... Dog breeding can be extra harmful. Though those dogs look a bit... bug eyed...

They can't tell directions very well and also the thing that makes it so they don't get tangled when they curl up doesn't work anymore. This has been seen as a "cute trait" by some people so they decided to breed them with it. I wish I remembered the snake's breed but I believe it was a type of python.

i think this is a play on the defects that dog breeding can cause for the sake of "cuteness." It's why as you make more dogs the worse the health gets, and why their hunger diminishes faster, but as a "plus" it gets cuter features (bows, big eyes, smaller body). I'm assuming the skeleton is just an exaggerated way of saying that the dog is basically in an early grave from all the defects it has

man, I knew this game had a deeper meaning humans have been inbreeding dogs and changing them to look "cute" so much that their life has been shortened health problems and other things. The food also had something to do with it "pump them full of nutrients" basically is food that was made with chemicals to make them grow faster or slower I'm not sure what it is but it has to do with to be some type of way the food affects them. It is honestly sad seeing a healthy dog 10-40 years ago turning into these dogs that look "cute" and "tiny".
