Hi, I watched your video and it helped. I've being looking to buy an action camera for snorkel. My big question is which accessories do I need? red filters? I think dji osmo action is best for underwater. But correct me if I'm wrong. Or GoPro or Insta 360?
I was wondering who took the spectacular shots for the DJI Osmo Action 5 camera. The downhill shots with the mountain bikes and freediving shots reminded me a lot of your style. Now everything is clear! Great job as always ❣ I'll probably sell my SLR underwater housing and buy one of these action cameras 😃 😃

I love my OA4 which I use for scuba diving. I am still looking for a housing (other than T-Housing) that will allow mounting an external diopter for close up shots. I also wish the zoom function could be a custom setting when touch screen is not eccessible with camera in a housing. Oh well, we can't have it all.
@andy.underwater.videos I looked at that, very nice and expensive. According to Backscatter prices for these items, the holder, close up diopter and .73X wide angle correction lens come to US$498.-. They don't give it away ha ha. I have sent a message to aoi in Hong Kong since I'm not very far from there.
Sick video and epic launch vid. One quick question and I assume the answer is no, but does the depth sensor work in the housing? I’d be using this for freediving and often go deeper than 20m. Thanks!
That’s a great question. I didn’t try but I d say it logically doesn’t work since the cam is in the housing and the sensor isn’t impact by the water around.
Thank you legend! You convinced me buying one for underwater stuff!😂 I just have to ask you, do you use nd filter underwater to keep the shutter angle at 180°?
Thanks ! Glad u liked it ! I usually never use ND filters underwater because u can’t change the setting while underwater (only at the surface) and it often gets dark at depth so I would just use it without ND and leave the exposure to auto.
Tks for the review! I have the Osmo Action 1 (and still use it) I'm planing to do the upgrade, but, I have one question, how strong its the quick release system for hanging the camera on a 1.5m stick to use on an boat, putting the camera on the water and going with the boat at 4-5 knots, following dolphins and whales?
I d say yes it holds. The only reason it could pop out is if u shit smth with it. However, for extra security in that specific scenario, u can always use the underwater housing and screw it to the stick.
GREAT video as always Zimy! do you think this is now at a level that you could use this as a general day to day camera in place of something like an a7III ? , i'm not really interested in using it for action, but am interested in the form small factor and having something that is versatile for a b-roll, product (which includes macro shots) and lifestyle shots, perhap candid streetwork that doesn't draw attention perhaps using using a third party tele lens for extra reach. I had the action 3 previously but returned as i found the noise and soft focus unusable.
So my answer is yes and no ahah the quality we re starting to get can definitely be used to produce high quality images and it could replace a wide angle lens as I explained in the conclusion of the video. However, with a bigger camera u still have more versatility as u can change lenses, do zooms, close ups, change focal length etc. Beside all the action stuff, for me this action 5 is amazing to capture a bunch of wide angle images, it’s amazing to vlog / shoot BTS as well since u can directly connect the DJI mic 2 it’s super fast and reliable and very enjoyable to use. I definitely always have one in my backpack but I wouldn’t say it can replace a big camera, I d say it’s complementary and faster to use on the go.
How did you get such a good bitrate and resolution before the update? Did you use any kind of AI Video Enhancers? Other people's sample footage looks pretty mid...Your footage looks too good to be true 😎
@@BurekNeinDanke no I didn’t use any AI or plugin or whatever. I guess the final result is a mix of shooting in the right lighting conditions with the right settings and then enhancing it in post production through color grading. I didn’t use any denoiser either.
Great video, I am a great fan of your vids and social media. I just purchased the DJI OA5 for scuba and free diving. What settings do you suggest for diving? Many thanks !
Thank you ! Well it depends on what u film : if u film animals with a lot of action and movement, I d suggest 4k 100 or 120fps to be able to slow down the footage. If the movement is slow or if it’s deep and therefore darker, I d suggest 4k 24 or 25fps to get more light on your sensor. Colors: either DLOG 10bit or normal 10bit. White balance auto. Exposure auto for underwater.
I couldnt get the auto start/stop at 1 meter depth to work properly. I set it to stop 5 seconds after surfacing. When diving it only started if the camera was already on. When surfacing it sometimes didnt stop at the surface, beause it still read 0.2 meters depth. The stop should really be when approaching the 1 meter mark again. What is your experience with this feature?
Thanks for the message. I think the camera has to be ON in order to start recording with the hydrostatic pressure detection. I didn’t have issues regarding the stop, it was always stopping at the surface. I ve had issues a few times when the camera was telling me I was like 10 meters underwater when I was just home checking stuff on the camera. So I guess sometimes it might not be 100% reliable but with my experience with the start/stop recording with pressure it always worked fine.

Thabks for such long and deep video. I have a question though, why are you saying ss shoud be 1/50 for 25fps? 180 rule doesn't work if you use stabilisation, since electronic stabilization heavily relies on ss. In my practice you need 90 rule (ss is 4x fps) minimum
Yes i didn’t mention that because i talked as a general rule but didn’t go into details. I personally don’t do 4x fps for shutter, it’s too much and u lose that nice motion blur. Usually I crank it up slightly more than 2x but I also sometimes shoot at 2x and it works fine to me if the footage isn’t too bumpy.
This is awesome. Amazing launch clips and video. Is the low light jittery with stability on? I’m looking for a small camera to film inside malls and for low or artificial light vlogging and walking tours. I was seriously considering the Ace Pro but been waiting on this release to compare them. Do you think it’s as good or better than the Ace Pro for low light? Is it using Ai to get that night footage? Looks insane!
Hi ! So as mentioned in the review, I haven’t been able to truly test the night mode myself unfortunately. This is the only feature I didn’t really test. On the footage I shot in the mountains at night, the stabilization looks good to me. I was walking on a steep and bumpy terrain without gimbal or whatever just holding the action 5 pro and the footage looks really stable so I d say that super night mode doesn’t impact stabilization.

Hi ! Yes of course they are definitely usable. Just set the color profile to normal colors, not log, and u can use it straight away. U can also use the DJI mimo app if u wanna cut the footage quickly and do very simple stuff. It’s super easy to use.
@@ZimyDaKid I need to attach the camera to a very fast-moving vehicle. will the magnetic thing hold? Is there no hard mount directly to the metal frame?
Hi, I've just purchased 2 Dji osmo action 5 pro cameras, 1 for the front of my bike and another for the rear. I want to loop record my journeys on them, just like I do with my car dash cam. I want to be able to just press record and not worry about it running out of space. I want it to record until it runs out of space on the sd card and starts to overwrite the oldest recordings. Basically I need it to continuously record without stopping. Please can you explain to me what I have to do to achieve this? Regards, Kiri
A couple of years ago I posted some video and photos of my using a mouth-mount for mountain biking (GoPro) and got roasted on reddit about how dumb I am. FF a couple of years and pro's figured out what surfers have known for over 10 years. And yes, the mouth mount has some of the best footage compared to most other mounting options and replaces the chin mount when you are not wearing a full face helmet. And you can shove the camera in your pocket when not in use.
Yeah the mouth mount is so easy to use. Love how fast u can capture pov shots with it. I personally don’t use to ride MTB tho. Seems a bit difficult ahaha
@@ZimyDaKid Haha, yeah, but what you do is more difficult than what people think. Transferring the real life experience to a video is so hard. Everything looks less steep, smaller and slower on video.
I'm on the fence with the Osmo 5, it has a lower recording bit rate than the 4, that's a concern for compression artifacts that are visible in various situations.. The normal mode is over done with the "HDR look" that GoPro was famous for. I'm sending my 5 back. Perhaps if a update comes out to improve the mentioned issues, then Ill buy it. I don't want to always (for my surface B roll) to record in log, its just adds to the work load. If you look at Time code around 13.19 the model looks so plastic? AI generated? Time code 13.49, the colours are just not good at all. However that may work out ok if it would be recorded in log and graded correctly. It just seems the 5 over HDR's the image in normal. Ps a very well put together video tho. It would be worth mentioning one gets a very noticeable quality improvement if you fit a AOI or Inon lens to it.
@@DangrrWildman I crank it up slightly more. So if I shoot 25fps I d probably do 1/80 shutter or 1/100 if it’s super bumpy. I would do some testing too and adapt depending on how it looks.
@@DangrrWildman yes I always use the in-body stabilization. If I see the footage is a bit jittery I d slightly crank up the shutter more but I like to keep it low if possible in order to get that beautiful motion blur
Yes the fact that we can see shift in the auto exposure was primarily due to the old firmware. When we started filming for the launch film the firmware we had to use wasn’t ready yet and they kept updating it throughout the 3.5 months of shooting.
Nope. The color profile has nothing to do with the fact that you lose colors in depth, it won’t bring back the colors. The deeper u go, the more u lose colors because the more water is blocking UV rays to go through which is the reason why everything gets more and more blue. By shooting with light, u bring back UV rays and therefore colors. Shooting in log at depth won’t bring more colors, it’ll just make your footage more grainy because of the lack of light.
Yes and no, GoPro log does very well with color grading at depths of 30-40m. Lights are better for close range, for landscape views color grading does good job
@@danielgarcia7447 u still manage to get really nice stuff… The jump with the downhill rider was epic and impossible to get such a slow mo without this feature…
How can the 5 Pro have a lower recording bitrare compared to the 4? This is absurd. Give users the option of selecting a higher bitrate setting at the expense of lower battery life and higher heat output. Please add this to a firmware update. The bitrate is too low on the 5 Pro.
Instead of droping prices as they go on they raise them. Not everyone buy this kind of cameras and for those that do, as me, i will not spend double the price to upgrade.
video quality is terrible other than that all the festures that people wish gopro has dji did it well but video quality go pro still has the best video quality
@@RedMushroom23 I clearly disagree with this. To me, the difference above water is minimal but I still prefer DJI. Underwater there s a big difference and DJI is far better.

@@ZimyDaKidhello zimy, did you use 16:9 or 4:3 underwater?
thanks for sharing
What light are you using for the underwater footage?
I have 2 kraken hydra 15’000
Thank you
Is it a good camera to do sit down videos at home talking to the camera? I'm looking for something that's an all in one outside action adventure and also inside talking to the camera chill
@@FatTonyTheSkipper well yes u could definitely do it. U can see in this review I also used the action 5 to capture images of me talking indoor. U won’t get the same look as a full frame camera but u can use it for sure.
@@ZimyDaKid yeah you’re right it looks great in those shots. I am wondering as I like to try make some cinematic videos. I have some black mist diffusion filters from K and F which are like 52 mm - I am wondering as there isn’t exactly these filters for the action five pro do you have any recommendations of how to put them on ourselves so we can achieve the cinematic black mist film look?
What settings do you use to film underwater?? Iso 100/800
@@juancampins I dont have specific Settings it depends on the Dive. Usually I leave exposure auto since I can’t change it underwater. I set an ISO limit but the limit depends on how dark the dive is gonna get so basically depends on weather, depth, etc…
@@ZimyDaKid thanks!!!!
Is the firmware update confirmed?
where were these underwater shots taken ?
Hi, congratulations for your videos, I have to buy an action 5 Pro, I do freediving and mount it on the speargun. I'm not capable of post production and I'm not interested for now because I only use the videos for my memories. So I wanted to know if without post production the videos are usable and of good quality. Then I'd better use an underwater case, my depth is max 12 metres. Thank you
Hi ! Yes of course they are definitely usable. Just set the color profile to normal colors, not log, and u can use it straight away. U can also use the DJI mimo app if u wanna cut the footage quickly and do very simple stuff. It’s super easy to use.
@@ZimyDaKid Thank you
what did you shoot the video of the behind the scenes?
Hi, Great video. Is the mount compatible with standard plastic Gopro mounts? Or is it only magnetic? Thanks.
Yes it’s compatible but u just need the magnetic mount and then u can screw it to any standard action cam mount.
@@ZimyDaKid I need to attach the camera to a very fast-moving vehicle. will the magnetic thing hold? Is there no hard mount directly to the metal frame?
@@dwisniak yes it holds well no problem !
GoPro- Better resolution
DJI- Better dynamic range
Only if we could get 5.3k or better on the DJI. Then I think it would be perfect
Thanks for this great video!
Is it really better than the Insta 360 Ace Pro for underwater?
I haven’t shot much with ace pro underwater so I can’t really tell precisely between these 2 unfortunately.
Hi, what about the Depth sensor inside the diving housing? Did you try it? it seems it isn't working inside the housing
No it doesn’t work in the housing because the camera has to be in direct contact with water pressure
@@ZimyDaKid That’s sad because I always dive with a housing
Does the hydrostatic detection work when the camera is in the underwater case?😊
It does not. I have the camera.
@@MichaelEngel thank you ! I was afraid so!
I can’t help on this unfortunately. Never used action cameras to do it. I don’t think it’s even possible as they aren’t made for such usage.
What song is that in the intro?
How easy is it to transfer footage from DJi to I phone …?? Great Great visuals sir ❤️🙏🫶🏻
Extremely easy through the app. U can find a full review on my channel
Thanks for your comment. I discussed with DJI and they confirmed they will release a new firmware soon with higher bitrate option.
This dude is an obvious shill of course he didn’t mention that the 4 has a higher bitrate.
can i know where was that dive site and country where u were surrounded by sharks?
Does the dji solo Transmitter able to activate noise cancellation once connected on Bluetooth to the camera
Not sure about this one I didn’t try. I d need to check but I think it should work yes.
@ZimyDaKid Please check if it possible 🙏
And thank you for taking the time to reply @ZimyDaKid
When you’re filming mountain bike POV. Are you still running ND filters with the 180 rule and post stabilizing the footage afterwards?
@@DangrrWildman I crank it up slightly more. So if I shoot 25fps I d probably do 1/80 shutter or 1/100 if it’s super bumpy. I would do some testing too and adapt depending on how it looks.
@@ZimyDaKid Would you still rely on the cameras stabilizing? Or into post?
Thank you for that info! I’ve had some difficulty getting good POV.
@@DangrrWildman yes I always use the in-body stabilization. If I see the footage is a bit jittery I d slightly crank up the shutter more but I like to keep it low if possible in order to get that beautiful motion blur
The autoexposure abrupt colour shifts and clipping highlights though.... What's up with that?
Yes the fact that we can see shift in the auto exposure was primarily due to the old firmware. When we started filming for the launch film the firmware we had to use wasn’t ready yet and they kept updating it throughout the 3.5 months of shooting.
If only it had a mod of 40 meter…having the depth displayed and reordered is a great feature but 20 m is not enough for me. Most dives go beyond.
as always top notch work man , just curios how much you get paid for this one ad? less then 100k or more then?
@@dr.syeddd happy u like my work man :) I can’t publicly share the entire budget for this launch film sorry man.
the other option for colors at depth would be shooting in log and color grading, in a lot of scenarios is better than lights.
If dji has light sensor and log is good it should be fine, if not I guess you only have lights left as an option…
@@SvetoslavBonevbut not matter the color profile, it won’t bring the colors back. All the red hues you lose won’t reappear with log.
I have plenty of videos at 30m and more where red has not disappeared …
Love the disclaimer: at 960fps don’t get too close to ur subject cuz it looks like 💩 lol ! Awesome feature 👌🏼
@@danielgarcia7447 u still manage to get really nice stuff… The jump with the downhill rider was epic and impossible to get such a slow mo without this feature…
@@ZimyDaKid DJI has a good ambassador in you! 👍
1" sensor would've had everyone upgrade, seems like they'll become the next gopro moving forward and just sell us the same camera with small updates 😢
Yeah an even bigger sensor would be awesome. Hopefully action 6 :)
Also the highlight halo around objects. WTF
I have the same but Osmo Pocket 3 is much more better if you do not sport or film under water…
Pocket 3 and action 5 have a completely different usage. Doesn’t really make sense to compare them.
The biggest issue with the AC5 is its pathetic 100 Mbps MAX recording bitrate. This is not acceptable.
It's my concern also, I wouldn't go as far as to say its pathetic tho.
How can the 5 Pro have a lower recording bitrare compared to the 4? This is absurd. Give users the option of selecting a higher bitrate setting at the expense of lower battery life and higher heat output. Please add this to a firmware update. The bitrate is too low on the 5 Pro.
I just asked DJI about these concerns and will update y’all when I get some infos.
@@ZimyDaKid merci ! c'et bizarre de baisser le bitrate sur une nouvelle version, en plus nommée pro
@@theocs.visions ouai je sais pas trop… je leur en ai parlé j vais revenir avec news quand ils auront rep
Seems like GoPro just gave up the fight. DJI is just showboating now 😂
Image quality is not always perfect. In fact, the image quality is far from perfect. The bitrate is horrible.
Think I'm sticking to my Osmo 4 for time being, that has better colour in normal mode in my view, less HDR look.
Regarding bitrate, a new firmware will be released soon with a higher bitrate option
Instead of droping prices as they go on they raise them. Not everyone buy this kind of cameras and for those that do, as me, i will not spend double the price to upgrade.
U can always get an action 3 or action 4 if u are on a smaller budget and don’t care about getting the best cam
@@ZimyDaKid i have the osmo action 3, so i do not fell like buying another. Ty
video quality is terrible other than that all the festures that people wish gopro has dji did it well but video quality go pro still has the best video quality
@@RedMushroom23 I clearly disagree with this. To me, the difference above water is minimal but I still prefer DJI. Underwater there s a big difference and DJI is far better.
I just purchased this camera but could this guy have been any more obvious of a DJI shill lmao
did i miss something? what in the world justifies this as a PRO anything? this is basically the dji 4 mk2 dang dji i was expecting game changing stuff this is so sad you put a new label on a firmware updated 4
