Savarkar was Atheist Secularist till Kalapani. However; he saw Many muslim(Pashtun/Pahari-Hindko) jail employees converting people for food. That was a turning point when he lost interest in freedom struggle and ideal secular state and he became a Right Wing who later coined the idea of Hindutva.
Congressis mock Savarkar For writing clemency petitions but in reality many political prisoners wrote clemency petitions so that they could trick Britishers to release them , which includes Sachindra nath Sanyal (kalapani), Ashfaqullah Khan (not kalapani), etc.
While revolutionaries like sachindra nath sanyal were released after writing petition; all of the petitions written by Savarkar were rejected as British did not trust his words. He was transferred to Ratnagiri jail and later house arrest only after his wife pleaded to the British Government.

0:01 AHIMSA WAS WAS KNOWN TO INDIAN PUBLIC MUCH BEFORE THIS GANDHIJI POPULARISED IT .. ON EXAMPLE
In 1811, nearly 60 years before Mahatma Gandhi was born, 10000+ Hindus of Varanasi peacefully protested for many weeks against a House tax imposed by colonial British.
They didn't block roads, or burn, or damage.
In this 🧵, lets review another rarely discussed chapter of Hindu history from 1811 using colonial era archives (compare this with modern street violence during hartal, Farmer protests 2024, etc):
1⃣For 15 months, from 1809 to 1810, Varanasi witnessed Hindu-Muslim riots related to Gyanvapi, Lat Bhairav, temples & mosques. Hundreds died. Violence ended by Oct 1810.
2⃣The colonial British then enacted a House tax to increase govt revenues. It required owner of every house & building in Varanasi - pakka or katchcha - to periodically pay cash to the govt. They sent men with beating drums, street to street, to publicly announce the new tax.
3⃣To the utter surprise and confusion of the British, Hindus of Varanasi city and nearby villages went on a collective protest in Dec 1810. The Hindus voluntarily shut down all shops & all services such as transport-boats-vegetable / grain / milk markets-dhobi-cleaning services-etc. Everything came to standstill. Streets became silent and empty. Hindus would wear white clothes, sit in tents in large parks. Their goal: repeal the House tax.
4⃣According to colonial era archived documents, about 20000 Hindus from every "class, caste, background" participated in the civil disobedience. The protests went on everyday for about 6 weeks. Women would bring food and water to the protestors. Volunteers would go around asking for donations to fund the food expenses.
5⃣J.D. Erskine - a British judge posted in Banaras - after visiting the protest sites wrote, "vast multitudes came forth in a state of perfect organization, each caste, trade and profession... [...] ... this state of things continued for more than a month and whilst the authority of the British government was in a manner suspended, the influence of the panchayat was sufficient to maintain the greatest order and tranquility".
6⃣Many Muslim-weavers of Varanasi soon joined the Hindus in peaceful protests. They too were affected by the House tax. This confused the British further, particularly after the 1809-1810 violent riots between the Hindus and Muslims.
7⃣Some British officials asked the Magistrate to send in British troops and forcefully break the protests. The Magistrate refused, saying that protestors were totally non-violent, caused no damage, violated no law, done nothing wrong.
8⃣British officials visited the gathered groups and through intermediaries asked questions. The Hindus explained, "our shastras and customs teach house as a principal necessities of life, our sadhus-sannyasins (monks, nuns), our infirm elders come to Kashi to die, we feed them in monasteries thru daana (charity), rulers came and went, no one ever such a tax. Repeal this tax."
9⃣The British first tried, "let's just wait, this protest and the tents will break up on its own". It didn't work. Few weeks later, the British tried a partial repeal. They announced that the monasteries, temples and mosques, and the poorest will be tax exempt. That "divide and rule" trick didn't work. The protests continued, the "poor" did not return to shops or work.
🔟The British finally repealed the tax. The protests ended in February 1811.

Veer sawarkar was a great man ❤ but Britishers and congress NE unko bohat torchur kiya.
I'm from Maharashtra and veer sawarkr was amazing personality.
But congress NE unko ek villain ke tarh desh ke samne represents kiya. But abhi youth know what is reality

Yes Iman and Moazzam... Firstly congrats on a nice review... Veer Savarkar wrote, among a vast amount of his progressive literature, a book titled 'Hindutva' in which he explains how 'Hindu' is not a name of a single religion but a collective name for various people who belong to the idea of one nation that was and is 'Hind' (India). Indian Congress always miscoloured the ideology for rule.

Tha thought of armed revolution against british was actually coined by Veer Savarkar ji at first place hence it was implemented by other figures on different timings like Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev, rajguru, Bhagat Singh and Netaji Bose. The icing on the cake was WW2 which weakened the british!!
