Read the book Wesley the Owl. It's about a researcher who takes an injured baby owl home (reluctantly) and it becomes imprinted on her. Some of the things Wesley does is cute like trying to brush his teeth and wash his face, are cute but others would be horrifying for the typical pet owner. It is a heartwarming story but realistic as well.
Thank you, Carla. I thought about having a pet owl, but I learned about these raptors not being a quality every day pet. They are serious business, and I will admire them from afar.

What an awesome little documentary on Karla and the owls, this lady deserves a lot of credit indeed for all the work she has done and is still doing to make this world a better place for owls. And it is so good to see this place again which I am lucky to call my home in America.
Here in the UK one of the suspected reasons we now have Eurasian Eagle Owls in the wild is because people who had seen Harry Potter and wanted an owl for themselves brought them over and when they got too big (and start to chase around the pet dog) they opened the door and let them leave.
@@eagles_s I don’t exactly agree with that. I believe that you can have an owl but only if you’re qualified in falconry. Many birds of prey (owls especially) can live happily in captivity and on top of that will live a longer life then what they would in the wild since in captivity they are never going hungry, have access to healthcare and don’t have any predators. I just think at the end of the day anyone who wants to look after an owl (or a bird of prey) should have the proper qualifications and abilities to respect these powerful birds. And on top of that it should also be a breeders mission to make sure these birds are going to the right people.
@@eggy-potter Ill clarify, nobody should be allowed to have an owl as a housepet. Its an Apex predator, would you keep a Lion or a Black Bear? Its natural instincts are to hunt and fly, not perch on ones shoulder. Falconry is not having a raptor as a pet, its using Raptors for educational and conservation purposes. In terms of life span though, one barn owl in the wild for 4 years can produce another 40, as compared to one in captivity for 20 that may produce none.

One of the best moments of my life, I was outside in the night listening to some owls talking in the trees. They can get very vocal if their is enough of them.
A place I worked at a looonnng time ago (late 70's) we had a pair of screech owls living close by. Every now and then they would be side by side just looking around and checking us out. Then one day they were gone. They were so sweet and beautiful. I've never forgotten them.
We have a Burrow Owl that's been hanging around at my work the past week. He or She (not sure how to tell) is pretty chill and lets us get pretty close (about 10ft) to just sit there, admire it, and take a couple of pictures. We dont try to disturb it. For most of us, it's been our first encounter with an owl. When we first saw it, I had called a wildlife rescue because I thought it was a baby that fell out of a nest or something. They asked me one well worded question and basically identified instantly from that. They said it may hang around for a couple of days or a couple of weeks until its ready to move on. It's really cool that it's still here. Beautiful creature to look at and the reason I'm watching this video. 😉
If you live out in “owl county” and you’re interested in owls the best thing to do IMHO would be to buy an owl house from a reputable hardware store that can be set up in your own back yard nailed to a tree, It’s the same principle as a bird house just bigger. We had several owls on a farm that I grew up on. We had two large barns with open rafters that the owls liked to nest in, probably because of mice. Anyway, they are not all cute, cuddly and nice. In fact, they can become aggressive and mean. We learned to never turn our backs on them and that they taste very very similar to partridge.
Was at Houston MN Owl Festival in 2012, held at the town's elementary school. Loved the owls flying across the hall during the presentation. And there was several activities for all ages. Owls have always been my favorite type of bird. I never seriously thought of having one as a pet, though. I suspect the fact that I went to several educational programs as a kid and observed their behavior firsthand had something to do with that. I once got to see an owl cast a pellet during a presentation, which was neat, but slightly gross. I think it also helps that I was older (high school age) when the Harry Potter series came out.

I don't know how much fun i would have at a place where a woman kept telling me how much her owls were going to '"hate" me. She's said that to Dave 3 times in the first 5 minutes
I do think there are owl species that are honestly easier and less dangerous to take care of than most large monitors. Great horn owls, barn owls, screech owls, are among the easiest in my opinion.
In my neighborhood there was a western screech owl who let me walk up to him within 1 foot and take a bunch of pictures. Looked me right in the eye the whole time. Didn't even move until my kids came running up.
That screech owl is identical to the one I found roosting in my chicken run last night. Darn thing let me pet him. Wasn't playing dead or wide eyed, he did have his feathers up but looked oddly relaxed like he had been watching me.with my chickens long enough to know I was a bird lady, lol. Is this thing gonna just post up in my run eating mice now? Apparently it can fit through the fencing?
Haha I love how she showed with Ruby the horn owl their pure nature she basically said look ‘If you want this type of owl as pet good luck’ she stroked it knowing she’d immediately get pecked 🤣👍
Ruby is about the most perfect looking owl... despite all the complexities and danger i still mildly fantasize about having an owl like that just chilling by my side

Dude I live in Southern MN. Thanks for showing me this.
They have to put signs out at my local trails due to howl attacks during mating season. It’s interesting that our owl, rabbit, & coyote population has exploded in the last 10 years even tho the area has seen a heavy increase in human population. Great video 👍
Back when Alice was at the old nature center Karla let me get close and snap a absolutely fantastic picture of Alice. Karla is great and does amazing work. Also a great video 👍
How come I never saw this channel, this is heaven.
Protective just like he said. This lady is like a know-it-all😆
I don't know how much fun i would have at a place where a woman kept telling me how much her owls were going to '"hate" me. She's said that to Dave 3 times in the first 5 minutes
I do think there are owl species that are honestly easier and less dangerous to take care of than most large monitors. Great horn owls, barn owls, screech owls, are among the easiest in my opinion.
Wonderful birds and so beautiful...but I'll appreciate them at a distance ...thank you.
Love the eastern screech owls and always have. The barn owls have an interesting appearance...
Awwww - it’s so cute... Ow, ow OWW it’s attacking me!
The way the owl crap on her i would of been done with these right then lol
Out of respect for these owls I’ll finish my fantasy of having one as a pet... damn
Owls are my favorite birds!! This was a very cool video!!
In my neighborhood there was a western screech owl who let me walk up to him within 1 foot and take a bunch of pictures. Looked me right in the eye the whole time. Didn't even move until my kids came running up.
This was a wonderful video!
Amazing lady doing amazing things with amazing animals!
I agree!
Aww, they’re such beautiful animals! 🥰 I guess I’m going to keep admiring them from a distance and sticking with cats 😅😁
Lots of jokes about owls being sky cats or cat/owls lol.
Owls are so alluring with their mystique energy
One of the most beautifulest birds in the world
I love barn owls. What a gorgeous species. She is so lucky to have an imprinted one.
I didn’t know what Human Imprint is until now whooaah
They’re so beautiful! 🥹🙆🏾♂️
Ruby is about the most perfect looking owl... despite all the complexities and danger i still mildly fantasize about having an owl like that just chilling by my side
That screech owl seems to understand what you're talking about him.. "as wise as an owl."
I have such an appreciation for those beautiful birds. They are definitely not a good pet . Great information!👍
So do I! They are amazing!
Smart the way you kept waving your hand in front of the mother owl,
A screech owl screeched one morning just above where I was sitting on my deer stand. I almost feel out of the stand with a pants full of shit it scared me so bad.
What do you do when an owl chooses You? I have a small owl that has set up house around my backyard. The Owl perches and sleeps in the bamboo over my patio and also up under a very old juniper, where there's owl poop on the branch and ground, but not on the patio. so considerate, so I really believe I've been somehow chosen, for what?
yes we have rodents roaming the gardens, who doesn't. also, squirrels, rabbits, bullfinches and their chickadee and various other avian friends, I have a pond so it's a known watering spot, we have lots of stop ins and baths, hawks too !
I have an imprinted batn owl. Loves people and loves to cuddle and be stroked by anyone.
They're SO fascinating. Some of their faces look more human than any other animal.
They also have that cat
bird combo thing, some. Hookbills(parrot) types, corvids, owls ; many in
superior- inelligence range in myriad aspects.
5:15- getting mean mugged by an owl 😂
Human imprint ey?
Reminds of that time on BBC where the rare parrot spent some time trying to imprint onto the cameraman's face ... lmao.
