Eileen Aldis My wife and I visited Amsterdam last fall and stayed in a Airbnb in the Jordaan area just 2 blocks away from the Ann Frank house. It was amazing, we used the canal boat rides to explore the city through the canals but most of our exploring during our 4 day stay was by walking and I’m glad we did that. A combination of visiting old gothic churches, red light district and the many bars around there, different museums, cafes and restaurants during the morning and at night. It was so laid back and definitely one of my favorite places in Europe to visit.
I loved your story on the Jordaan. I was born there in 1951 and left when I was eight years old. I went back in 2012 for a visit. Brought back lists of memories. Thank you
Been to Amsterdam twice and visited part of the Jordaan. Did the boulivardier by sitting outside a cafe with a coffee watching the world go by-very enjoyable and a great area.
I returned after 30 years in the 90's and all the local jargon is lost. Found that out when I ordered an "Uitsmijter" in a local cafe. Cafe in Amsterdam is a cross between a coffee shop and a bar. Typically you order lunch in a hurry too. Uitsmijter is a bed of shaved ham and 2 fried eggs (sunny side up) on slices of freshly baked bread. The magic was gone the waitress spoke to me in ABN aka posh Dutch. The house I lived in during the first 12 years of my life is part of a larger luxury complex. No more street soccer, kasti (rounders) the 2 sports which helped me to hold my own in Australian footy and cricket in its various forms. I remember the call when I kicked a footy ball back in the local park. "Looking for a game mate?" Hope you enjoyed your stay but plenty is lost after a generation.
The nine streets and the canals aren’t actually part of the Jordaan. The Canals were designed as a fancy boulevard for the poshest members of society. The Jordaan by contrast was a workers neighbourhood. If you look at the city map you can see that the canals follow a deliberate pattern, while the Jordaan was just build on the existing agricultural (Polder) land. This made it a lot cheaper to build.
Hey…I really liked this video! Jordaan exudes a relaxed feeling and an elegant charm. Flowers and greens sprouting from windows, pots and barrels! So many charming windows and gables…Quaint shops, bars, cafes, river house’s and canal boats….Forests of bicycles! Hustle and bustle for sure…But from people and bikes and boats…All quiet and serene. What a wonderful place in the middle of Amsterdam! I liked what you said about Anne Frank. Her story is an enduring lesson for humanity, that will always deserve our respect. A lovely video. Thank you.
Thank you! This area is certainly elegant, yes. Charming and elegant. Forests of bicycles - I love that image! I had to get used to how many bicycles there are. They really come from all directions!
Hello Eileen! What a great video, thanks for sharing your experiences and favorite places. I had 3 trips planned to Amsterdam years back, but all fell through. Finally in 2016 I made my first trip...and fell in love with Amsterdam. I visited twice in 2017 and have another visit scheduled for this May (2018). My favorite areas are the Jordaan neighborhoods as well as the Oud Zuid. They're quite different, but both have their unique charms and a coziness to them I really love. I had dinner three times at "de vergulde Gaper" during my trips and enjoyed watching the world go by, Amsterdam style. I also discovered a GREAT shop - "Property Of..." - on the corner of Herrengracht and Herrenstraat: it's a small corner store offering great bags, rucksacks, watches, wallets, etc., and the sales people could not have been friendlier! They immediately offer you coffee and there is absolutely NO pressure to purchase, like so many other small shops. The Nine Streets is a favorite area as well, and the shops are fun and diverse as well as offering so many restaurants and cafés. I feel so at home there! Try visiting the Oud Zuid, if you haven't already. It's VERY quiet and borders the Vondel Park. One of my favorite cafés is "CoffeConcepts", where I can honestly say I have had THE best coffee ever. The streets are lined with wonderful, elegant buildings and "George" restaurant (just down the street from CoffeeConcepts) is excellent and great for people watching. Thomas
WOW thanks so much for all these awesome suggestions, Thomas! I'm going to keep it all in mind for a future trip :) Now I'm craving delicious coffee! ☕️What a coincidence that you also sat at de vergulde Gaper! We got lucky with some sunshine at just the right moment and sitting there watching the world go by was one of my favourite memories of the visit. I hope you have a wonderful trip in May and please let me know if you make any more great Amsterdam discoveries!
Hi Eileen - what a treat to hear back from you! Due to a long line of events, I am forced to forego my May trip to AMS - I'm devastated. I so wish I could pack up my belongings and move to Amsterdam...I've had it with Germany! Hopefully I can book another trip (if I ever have the money again!) Thomas
The city i want to visit the most, my uncle live in Jordaan area at Laurierstraat,,, next year maybe i will come, and walking around the neighbourhood 😄
I am tearing up.. Miss it. OK, instead of that other place, I will go back to the Jordaan, for a couple weeks. Been many years since I travelled at all, nothing like hanging out in the most hangoutable city ever, AMS. Thanks..!
i love the Saturday farmers market, well actually all the Saturday markets at Noodermarkt, I like the joordan...one of my favorite walks is along the bloemgract and then wandering without specific purpose through the joordan...i enjoy the changing moods of amsterdam as winter settles in
Hi Jim, We didn't see the Saturday markets but I love markets in general so I'm sure I'd love it too. The Jordaan definitely seems like the perfect place to wander. That's how I found The Mouse Mansion! "Changing moods" makes a lot of sense, too, because the weather varied a lot throughout the day: rain, sun, repeat.
Hi Eileen - On a very grey and wet Sunday I returned to your wonderful video to re-visit my favorite part of Amsterdam. How great to have this available...for days like today. Thanks again for making and posting this :-)
Hi Eileen! I booked another trip to Amsterdam - in August. I CAN'T WAIT!! This time around I hope to visit Haarlem and perhaps go back to the Van Goch Museum...my first time there, I cried pretty much the entire time - seeing his moving paintings just inches away, as well as knowing his amazing and tragic story. I felt pretty much the same being inside the Anne Frank Huis. Knowing all that had transpired there: the emotions and power of those most frightening days and years. I moves you to your core. Where are you both now?
Glad you enjoyed it! That's wonderful you're visiting in September. It's such a great area. We made other videos about Amsterdam and other cool neighbourhoods if you're interested: bit.ly/thenetherlandsplaylist. Have a great trip :)
@@EileenAldis I'm going to Rotterdam too after my five days in Amsterdam! Thanks so much for the Rotterdam video and your wonderful sharing and good wishes. Hope you are having a great time wherever you are! Thank you Eileen! :-)

Eileen Aldis Thanks so much! For sure I will take 100’s of pictures as photography is a passion of mine! 😂 Truly can’t wait. We’ll take your suggestion with regards to simply sitting down and watching. Also the place with the shoes will be perfect for my wife. 😁 Thanks again!
Hi Eileen i liked very much your video of the Jordaan, since the first time that i came to this city this is the imost beautiful suburb in Amsterdam i would like that you can recommend a good cafeteria not coffee shop that serves good capuccinos and cakes and also a good bookstore, thank you.
Hi there, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) It's such a charming part of Amsterdam. Great video - well done! Though, a correction: De 9 Straatjes is not part of Jordaan. It’s close, but not within the neighborhood. I’ve lived in both spots, and love them.
My family from my father side where Jewish dock workers in the jordaan. When the Germans invaded they moved from Amsterdam to a small village in south holland: Alphen aan den rijn. After the war my grandfather met my grandmother in that village and the whole family still lives there. My grandfather wanted to go back to the jordaan but they didn’t
on my 2 previous trips I have tended to be drawn more to the east side of the old city (Nieuwmarkt area for example) and spent very little time in the Jordaan, other than around the Westerkerk and Rozengracht. next time I need to focus more on the west side!
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it! We made a series of videos in Amsterdam, including some other neighbourhood profiles if you're interested while planning your next trip: bit.ly/AmsterdamPlaylist. Hope it's helpful! :)

@@EileenAldis Yes it really is, last time I didn't make an appointment. So have to enter after 4pm, then we wait outside in the wind for almost 4 hours.
That was a great video. But the Jordaan is not from jardin, the Dutch have many French words in their language and would not make such a reckless conversion. The princengracht was always called the princengracht. The best reason I think is the simplist, the owner of the land was named Jordaan and it was called Jordaan's land then shortened to Jordaan after the buildings were built. I live in the heart of the Jordaan just around the corner from the Mouse Mansion and I agree that it is a lovely place to live.
Sorry this vlog completely did not see the real Jordan. It is a mythic and mystical cultural whirlpool of generations of foreigners from the days of when Dutch merchant ships ruled the seas. - Morgan & Rick
Hi there, I've answered this comment before, as you saw, but, as you wrote an additional comment, I'll repeat. The Anne Frank House, De Vergulde Gaper, and the Little 9 Streets are on the opposite side of the Prinsengracht which, yes, is the official border of the Jordaan, I believe. I said in the video that the Westerkerk is on the border. Lots of sources include these areas and sights in the Jordaan as it's separated only by a canal width. This video is an informal guide to the Jordaan neighbourhood. I don't think anything I've included is misleading. You're entitled to disagree, of course.
The name "JORDAAN" is derived from the French language meaning Le Jardin. Many courtyards with gardens and the naming of streets after flowers also point in the direction of jardin as the origin of Jordaan.
I've answered this before so will paste it here. The Anne Frank House, De Vergulde Gaper, and the Little 9 Streets are on the opposite side of the Prinsengracht which, yes, is the official border of the Jordaan, I believe. I have also not gone in the Anne Frank House but have walked by it both times I have been in AMS. I do care, but not interested in standing in line or to see inside. if you literally don't care than yes you are a sorry excuse for a human being.
Hi there, I take it you're the same person writing on Reddit. The Anne Frank House, De Vergulde Gaper, and the Little 9 Streets are on the opposite side of the Prinsengracht which, yes, is the official border of the Jordaan, I believe. I assume this is why you've written 'wrong.' I said in the video that the Westerkerk is on the border. Lots of sources include these areas and sights in the Jordaan as it's separated only by a canal width. This video is an informal guide to the Jordaan neighbourhood. I don't think anything I've included is misleading. You're entitled to disagree, of course.

After the war my grandfather met my grandmother in that village and the whole family still lives there. My grandfather wanted to go back to the jordaan but they didn’t
jewish dock WORKERS? they actually did physical work?
why that's as crazy as a fiddler on the roof!
Like the video. It's a beautiful place. Educational too.
Thanks! Yeah, it's gorgeous. Exploring this area was definitely a highlight of Amsterdam for me.
on my 2 previous trips I have tended to be drawn more to the east side of the old city (Nieuwmarkt area for example) and spent very little time in the Jordaan, other than around the Westerkerk and Rozengracht. next time I need to focus more on the west side!
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it! We made a series of videos in Amsterdam, including some other neighbourhood profiles if you're interested while planning your next trip: bit.ly/AmsterdamPlaylist. Hope it's helpful! :)
very cool.... can never get enough of AMS content so I will be checking them out for sure. thanks for the handy link!
Great video! Very clear and precise explanation. I’ll be heading to Amsterdam next week. Thanks for the tips...

What's that song at the beginning? It's wonderful! Love the mice!
I love the mice too! Adorable. The song is called Out On The Town by Tom Peters, Lincoln Grounds, and Michael Pearse.
Incredible video - very meaning and cinematic!

It's such a cool city 💕What do you miss the most?
You haven't been to the museum of the siege of Leningrad yet, it was a real hell.
I wish I saw your video before going to Amsterdam recently! Great video! I would've loved to stopped by The Mouse Mansion.
Thanks a lot, Nicole! I hope you had a wonderful time! The Mouse Mansion is super cute 🐭
Awesome video! I love the 9 streets!
Thanks! Yeah, that area is so cuuuute ❤️
very good information, thanks.
Thanks, Daniel! Glad you enjoyed it :)
the name jordaan coms from the french word jardain what garden means
Reallyenjoyed
Fine. Thanks a lot lady.
The 'nine little streets' are not in the Jordaan
Silvia Summers Yeah but there’s literally 10 meter in between haha
Jordaan is only west of Prinsengracht. Neither the Achterhuis, nor 9 streets are properly part of Jordaan.
very interesting place to visit-----and i would ask for chocolate---yum.
Hello! Yeah, it's a beautiful place :)

anne frank place is amazing
Yes, it's a very moving place to experience.
@@EileenAldis Yes it really is, last time I didn't make an appointment. So have to enter after 4pm, then we wait outside in the wind for almost 4 hours.
I will be visiting Amsterdam next month and am so excited.
You are so excited and I can help you in this way !
Cool vid! But even more impressive you made it without any locations in the actual Jordaan....
Ohh....saya kangen semuanya.....
saya juga
Wow.
I live in the heart of the Jordaan just around the corner from the Mouse Mansion and I agree that it is a lovely place to live.
nice....
Sorry this vlog completely did not see the real Jordan. It is a mythic and mystical cultural whirlpool of generations of foreigners from the days of when Dutch merchant ships ruled the seas.

The Anna Frank House and Nine Streets aren't lying in the Jordaan.
Dankje well. Het huis Anna Frank. Gefeliciteerd. Nederlandse honderd procent 🇳🇱

The name "JORDAAN" is derived from the French language meaning Le Jardin. Many courtyards with gardens and the naming of streets after flowers also point in the direction of jardin as the origin of Jordaan.
Le Jardin = The Garden
the best and most comfortable way to enjoy the ex-workingclass Jordaan is not to belong to that class and enjoy dady's money.
Japanese thank you!
none of these things were in the jordaan
I've answered this before so will paste it here. The Anne Frank House, De Vergulde Gaper, and the Little 9 Streets are on the opposite side of the Prinsengracht which, yes, is the official border of the Jordaan, I believe. “No Females Allowed” sounds like it would be a cool name for a corporate business 🤔
Yolo
Have you visited Amsterdam from Berlin?
Eileen Aldis sadly not yet^^. But will go there, just don't know when yet. I am a little occupied cause of my studies at the moment ;)
That makes sense. Have fun when you go!
Eileen Aldis Thanks! Yes, I hope so ;)
I went outside of the Anne Frank house and didn't bother to go inside (I didn't really care). Does that mean I am not human?
It's all up to you if you feel moved to go inside or not.
I have also not gone in the Anne Frank House but have walked by it both times I have been in AMS. I do care, but not interested in standing in line or to see inside. if you literally don't care than yes you are a sorry excuse for a human being.
Verkeerd.
