I just went through this yesterday. It might work if you bought extra long rivets, but the base of the mount it too thick for rivets to work properly. The installation looks pretty but pops out of the Kayak deck with very little pressure. I also tried using Well Nuts with little success. I ended up cutting a circular hole big enough for my arm to fit through behind the back of the seat and used stainless steel bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers. If you're using the mounts for outriggers as I am you want it nice and sturdy. If you're fishing and start to lose your balance you need something that's going to take the pressure, otherwise you'll end up in the water with possible damage to the Kayak.
Hi there, great channel! I just bought a very entry level yak, lifetime triton. It has no inside hull access at all. Did this Scotty mount work out well over time? I’ve heard people complain about the pop rivets weakening. If it held up, seems like best solution for me. Thanks for the great content.
The Scotty products don’t come with bolts usually. Railblaza mounts are what I have started to use more of. Railblaza has everything included. Scotty still makes a great product but fasteners are often sold separately.
I am having a problem with the rivets. So far i have tried this twice with the the Yak Gear trigrip rivet set and it seems the rivets do not expand far enough to go under the kayak hull but expand while partially through the 241 mount. (I plan on using the mount for a ascend12 kayak as a anchor mount) I used a 3/16th drill bit to drill the hole in the kayak.
NOTES: If you choose to apply well-nuts don't use any silicone sealant. Bolts, nuts, and washers are the best option for attaching the Scotty 241 mount but require access to inside of hull. Another great way to provide a lot of strength when mounting is to use a backplate. These can be bought or made but also require access to inside of kayak. If you use rivets make sure to buy the Tri-grip rivets for kayaks as linked in video description. 13/64" holes drilled provide a nice tight fit for the rivets we used. We chose them because we didn't have inside hull access and we have had great luck with them. Mighty Mounts work great with the 241 Scotty Mount if you want to have it install the rod holder mount on a sliding track like "GearTrac". **If you have questions just ask or join our Facebook group!
Correct. It isn't recommended to use silicone or marine goop for well nuts. It can make them slippery and cause them to pull out easier. Most well nut manufacturers will state not to use such sealants. Well nuts are meant to seal by themselves.
@Regnier X (aka Alex X): The rivets should work. If they didn't then maybe will have to find longer ones yet. Maybe you have a thicker kayak hull than normal. That is kind of surprising. Have used the same rivets on multiple kayaks. Maybe these will work better. These have a grip range of 3/8" to 1/2". amzn.to/1EUCTHJ
Well nuts are probably a bit stronger than rivets but we haven't had issues with tri-grip rivets that we have linked in video description. We use them for a lot of accessories.
This video is nonsense.. the Rivet size you recommend don't work. They are too Short. The Rivet gun keeps pulling the rivets through the hole. I went with the wall nuts instead.
Maybe they changed the link. This video is old, but I had linked to “Scotty” trigrip rivets specifically designed for “Scotty” mount. I also think you meant to say well nuts. Well nuts are ok, but I have more issues with them pulling though than rivets.
Normal rivets doesn’t pull through normal rivets don’t pull through with most Scotty mounts, but in this case it is thicker and he is absolutely correct because I’m having the same issue right now and I’ve had the same issue with kayaks as well. These rivets need to be longer than one to properly fold under the hole of the kayak and hold, your mouth incorrectly you just can’t see on the under side and don’t know that they didn’t fold correctly but I guarantee you that they didn’t mine keeps pulling out as well. Well nuts are not gonna cut it like you said I don’t want holes that big kayak pull out when the rubber wears out… guys if you’re doing this I’m thinking you’re going to need 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch 3/16 trifold rivets
The rivets are a scotty scam. Those are not 3/8. The grip looks bigger than 1/2. It kind of pssies me off when I saw the box. Shady size marketing so you don't go buy your own They are trying to confuse people. I'll go to home depot and pick up some.

Just the vid I was looking for. Thanks. Q- is it easy to remove the rivert, say in the case where I wanted to remove the mount.?
Hey loved the video! But I have a question. If I’m using the well nuts to mount the rod holders, what size hole should I drill?
That depends on the size of well nuts. You want them just big enough to put the well nut in.
KayakDIY Got it. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! I just ordered/received the mounting bracket.. disappointed it did not come with a set of screws/bolts.

Love Scotty Mounts! Can't Think Yak Fishing Without Thinking Scotty!
is the scotty anchor lock any good? i have 38$ saved up and i’m thinking about buying that for my kayak
Thanks for the tutorial. Shall i use Scotty 241 (without lock) or Scotty 241L (with lock) when installing Scotty 140 transducer mount?
Jairus Audwin Scotty 241 is what I use. I use bolts and nuts to install if I can access inside. Otherwise I use rivets.

so no marine goop for well nuts?

Awesome you just saved me time and money. Thanks a million for the fast reply!!

Would you say that rivets are the next strongest option from nuts and bolts ??
Well nuts are probably a bit stronger than rivets but we haven't had issues with tri-grip rivets that we have linked in video description. We use them for a lot of accessories.
What size rivet did you use?
DREW V Rivets used are linked in video description below the video. In fact all supplies used are linked in the video description.
I used 4 #10 1.5" long screws with no problem

I now mostly use nuts and bolts or screws for hardware. Only use rivets when absolutely no in hull access. I do like the tri-grip rivets.
can't hear you. downvote, goodbye.
