Un'esecuzione superlativa: cantanti, orchestra soprattutto, direzione; il tutto curato nei dettagli e mai abborracciato.

It has no catalog number of Händel's works. Nabal is a pastoral oratorio compiled from Handel's doubles in 1764 by John Christopher Smith. It was premiered on March 16, 1764 in Covent Garden, London. The recitatives are probably Smith's work, while the arias are largely borrowed from Handel's operas, oratorios, anthems, and cantatas. John Christopher Smith, was the son of Handel's lead copyist - was enthusiastic about music from a young age and left school at the age of thirteen to become a student of Handel. In 1727 he was a violist in Handel's orchestra. In 1750, Smith assisted the already ill composer in the performances of his oratorios and was himself a valued musician, being organist and principal conductor of Foundling Hospital.
Smith oratorios: Rebecca, Nabal, Tobit and Gideon, all arrangements of Handel's music with new libretti and performed in the Royal Theater, Covent Garden in the 1760s. In 1998 an oratorio Redemption (libretto William Coxe) was discovered in the Paris National Library. 1740 to 1749 (and at Handel's encouragement) with his own opera compositions - Rosalinda (libretto John Lockman, first performance January 4, 1740 in Hickford's Rooms in London), Issipile (1743, libretto Pietro Metastasio), Il Ciro riconosciuto (1744, libretto Metastasio ), Dario (1746, lost), Demofonte (1747, libretto Metastasio, lost), Artaserse (1749, libretto Metastasio, lost). His best Oratori is "Paradise Lost".

This work is a Handel compilation and not a work written as a unified piece. Christopher Smith compiled the Handel music in 1754

Dear all, I am at the origin of this revival. While working for the late J. C. Martini to find some original manuscript at the Bibliothèque nationale de Paris from Delalande and other french baroque composers, I stumbled upon three pasticcii by JC Smith,Handel's copyist that were saved by V. Schoelcher from certain loss. It must be known that those 3 autograph manuscripts were not bought by Chrysander from Schoelcher's contact in Bristol who had this chest full of andwritten scores from Handel that survived all the vicissitudes of unprotected patrimonial wealth. It is therefore by chance that they ended up in Paris after the demise of Schoelcher and survived the disdain of many sponsors for "unoriginal" pieces of work. I remember those days in the early 2000 when me, Jochen and his wife Judith Freise visited the section musique of the Bibliothèque Nationale to check the originals out, how we were stunned by the history of these documents written from the hand of the closest coworker of Handel, the man who new the best the style, the ways and means of Handel. I spent wonderful days with Jochen and Judith in Paris. As always during this period, this until 2006, I am also part of this recording as a bass singer in the chorus. This Pasticcio was obviously given twice in 1761-1764 for the celebration of Handel's memory and work. There is a excellent study of those 3 pasticci by a US academic we invited to a special event in Frankfurt to hold a speech on these works. Consider Nabal as an important proof of the genius of Handel.

It's spurious. It's just a collection of Handel works (and some not Handel works) thrown together and given the name Nabal. I've no idea who put together the labretto, but many of the words are the same as they were in the originals. Those which have been reworked sound clumsy and decidedly un-Handelian. I doubt very much that you will find sheet music for this since it is not truly an authentic Handel Oratorio and was only thrown together for the purposes of making this recording. It was assembled and the libretto written in the late 1970's, so just a bit too late to be Handel.

I do have them...but on paper print...very heavy. I assume you can get the original microfilm for the bibliothèque national de Paris. Joachim Martini and I deposited a copy of the score and of this audio recording to the chairwoman of the music department of the library in question.😉
