    I cried! I visited in '92, on a "journey of a lifetime" to visit the AW USA and see for myself native indian culture. One of my abiding memories was being GIVEN fry bread or "sopapilla" when visiting Taos Pueblo. It was heavenly! I followed up with several visits to various Puebloan sites of "the Ancestors" and I was BLOWN AWAY by history and stories from times before Columbus! It changed My life, and affects it to this day!
    If only I could get the recipe to reproduce that delicacy here in the UK?

    I was honored to have this right in a humble home on the reservation. One of my favorite life moments.
    I still see the eyes of her timid children from across the room in my mind... Hi! 👋

    I grew up with this..my mother called Soapillas. ..as Spaniards. .Im guessing it was passed on by her Paternal grand parent (Okaywingee) Pueblo... people's of New Mexico. Both plain version and sweet made with butter and sugar..Love this ..I'm kosher so I don't use Lard.(coconut oil or grapeseed instead...Not so bad for ya...
    Note.. growing up ...
    My husband ate this many times at Powwow he attended
    (Its funny that we never grew up with any cultural heritage to our First Nation roots)...
    "Fry bread" is in First Nation history..
    Tomorrow I will make some after I finish making "more" plum butter...now this will be a treat!♡

      Jacquelyn Ward it’s easy to make. Many different recipes depending on what tribe. I make the one that has just a bit of sugar. I’m not sure of the tribe. I like the sweet bread . It’s like 1 and 1/4 tbsp of sugar.

      D Hoosier... So many ways to make even though there are only a few ingredients. I have been looking for one that is like the one I had as a kid, but haven't found it yet. My aunt sent me a recipe from the rez and I haven't tried it yet. I like the fry bread from the North East more than the stuff I have had in the South West.

    In regards to the "indian" comment below, in some circles today Indian has become a preferred term of defiance. Like Chicano or Black starting out with a negative connotation, but adopted to "turn the tables" on the powers that be, After all "American," native or otherwise is a European construct. That being said Native American is just as incorrect as Indian. If we want to be strict about it, then First Nation peoples should demand to be called by their nations individual name.

    • @waynerobinson2301
      @waynerobinson2301 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aztecinexile no dumb shit its Induan not dot but feather to antone else its humane family not race / dverybody came from some other place back to Adam and Eve the first man was original redskin made by heavenly father out of clay / God breathed into Adam the Spirit of LIFES ( plural of life ) all mankind as opposed to animal kinds came from him this is why all men have Sin and therefore commit sins . We all need Gods forgiveness and grace . None of us is better than anyone else . Its a family not a race .

      " If we want to be strict about it, then First Nation peoples should demand to be called by their nations individual name."
      Of course.
      But, if we want to talk about continents and the people living on these continents we need names for these continents. In English - another European construct - these continents are called what they are called. America(s) is called that, therefore the people living on that/those continent(s) are called Americans.
      In my mind it is important to separate the people living on the continent before 1492 and the people who came after; the invaders, the people they brought here and the people they let in, and the way to do that is to call the first group of people "Native Americans" and the second just "Americans".
      And, of course, as with everything, Native Americans may call themselves what ever they like, and everyone else just have to try their best and apologize if they manage to insult or offend anyone. IF someone's ethnicity or nationality is in any way relevant.

      Wayne Robinson white mans God. Native people around the world have other gods. sky Gods. Hopi tribe. Dogon Tribe of Africa. You have been brainwashed to believe the Bible not the creator .

      Ketutar Jensen coming from an actual First Nation Denesuline of Canada, “First Nation” means Natives with Treaty Rights. Plus in Canada we replacing “Indian” with “indigenous”. One more thing First Europeans in North America Was the Vikings 500 years before Columbus. They were fended off by Natives and Inuits.

    I like the idea of calling each people by their tribal name! Makes so much more sense!! American Cherokee!
    How cool is that?

    • @robertm4050
      @robertm4050 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would prefer to not call myself Blackfoot/Oneida/ American or my children Blackfoot/Oneida/Chickasaw Americans. There are hundreds and thousands of other regional groups/tribes throughout Europe and in other countries, but we don't call them by their names either. I think the one nationality that should be done away with is French-Canadian. If a person is French-Canadian then wouldn't that just mean they were French?

    • @missbree7333
      @missbree7333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an idea... However....American Indians are the true founders of this country. ... Until white people fucked it up.

    • @robertm4050
      @robertm4050 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      missbree75 c Who really has dibs on the land? It is not like Native Americans are actually indigenous to North America. It is not like Indians were not killing other Indians and enslaving their women and torturing the men and then stealing their land. It is just white people had better weapons and a resistance to certain diseases, if it were the other way around I can assure that Indians would massacre white people and give them deadly diseases just the same. If there had been people here before the Indians, you damn well know the Indians would have killed them too. I just think it is a shame that you only hear about the damage done to black people in the media while you never hear a thing about the Natives.
