Fascinating to compare this 1975 Vienna studio performance with the the 1947 live performance from Moscow. Here Richter plays at a much slower, more controlled tempo; two decades before he lets loose with a thrilling breakneck dash to the finish.

Simply - perfect
Tuve un compañero de colegio, cuyo nombre prefiero eludir, que tocaba esta sonata siempre que advertía un “pesar” amenazante. Decía, “nada mejor que ella me alivia y despinta los nubarrones del alma”. Recuerdo una tarde de febrero que revisábamos unos deberes en su casa y, al azar de un descanso, la madre nos sirvió un chocolate bien caliente con picatostes. Sin previo aviso, él se remango el jersey e inició quedo esta pieza, desgranándola hasta el final como un mar de algas que se encendieran a cada nota. Escena que reviví al leer estas líneas de Swafford en su biografía del músico: «En esta obra brillante y temáticamente cohesionada, alterna música tranquila e introspectiva con explosiones de virtuosismo, y el conjunto parece una versión para dos manos de un concierto para piano, rematado con cadencias al final de los movimientos primero y último. El suave comienzo suena casi como una introducción en las cuerdas, sobre la que irrumpe el solista con un pasaje de bravura fortíssimo. Con tales cambios de textura y color, Beethoven confiere a la Sonata en do mayor una cualidad calidoscópica» (2017: 301) .

Was mögen Haydn und Beethoven in den Stunden der Uraufführung von op. 2 für Gedanken durch den Kopf gegangen sein, vor allem beim 4. Satz von Nr.3 ?
Comme d'habitude le couple Beethoven/Richter au sommet de tous et de toutes. Dommage l'enregistrement qui fait pas justice au grand maître (toujours négligeant en ce qui concernait la qualité des studios sur lesquels il comptait).
The Adagio of this recital puts to bed any notion that Richter was a little cold when playing slow movements.
What is it with measure 7 and its ilk throughout? Richter plays the measure at a completely different (i.e. faster) tempo at every occurrence. I've never heard anyone else do that before.

I don't hear it as a faster tempo per se, but rather an increase in momentum.
