This takes me way, way back. For me the journey started @ the Red Fox Inn in Bethesda MD. Now it's probably a parking garage or the foundation of a highrise; but back then, the early 70's it was a Bluegrass club & if you went there you went to *listen*. For us it was "The Country Gentlemen" on Thursday nights. Then one Thursday the Gentlemen didn't show up, it was these "Seldom Scene" guys, we had no idea who they were but the waitress told us to stick around, it would be worth it. It was. It really was. "Wait a Minute", "Rider", a few more gems & we had a new favorite band! Then one Thursday the "Scene" didn't show up, it was a new band, "Hickory Wind". Again we were about to leave but again the waitress assured us it'd be worth our while to stick around, and once again we did. Sure enough, by the end of the 1st set of "Appalachian Gypsy music" newgrass more than bluegrass, string band music flavored with jazz and country western, these guys *listened* to one another! Virtuosos, their picking seemed effortless, the instruments were played in ensemble fashion. Each instrument blended with and complemented the others. With the right kind of ears when Hickory Wind were ON, you could pick up hints of the Old World roots of bluegrass, Reels, hornpipes, the gypsy string sounds. Yes you guessed it, we had a new, new favorite band. They put out 3 or maybe 4 albums, I only have 3. I wonder what happened to Sam Morgan, Bob Shank, Pete Tenney, Glen McCarthy, Mark Walbridge? I hope they're still playing ... I don't mean any of this to detract from The Seldom Scene, as if anything could. No, just call it an old guy reminiscing.

I live in Northern VA and used to go see these guys in the late 80s and early 90s at the Birchmere. These guys were bluegrass perfection as far as harmonies go. Mike Auldridge on dobro, John Starling, Ben Eldridge amd Tom Gray…almost brings a tear to my eye watching in 2022.

  • @turtlelucy

The Seldom Scene was my favorite bluegrass group, and this is my very favorite of their songs. Duffy, with his magnificent mullet, was a stocky man who curled around his mandolin until it became a part of him. His playing was brilliant and his high tenor voice was beautiful and unexpected. Mike Auldredge, with his gorgeous wavy silver hair, made me weep when his dobro soared above the others, and this song is a good example of that.

Just a guess on my part but was it your Father (or perhaps your Grandfather ?) who Mike spoke of when describing the man who first got him involved in music ? Mike was a treasured friend and, in my opinion, the greatest Dobro player the world has ever known. You were right when you called him "a sweet guy" unless you got him to talking about politics. I still treasure our ancient conversations. It used to bother me when he referred to himself as a "Short Timer" but here I am at 67 and I begin to understand more and more.
