    Quite the best Bluegrass Group in the last 50 years. Thank you Seldom Scene.

    Watched this many times and it never fails to deliver. Seldom Scene is at the top of the pyramid and just delivers on so many levels. Thank you SS. Just got this on my YT feed for the first time in a long time and loved it.

    Dang near a perfect song. Some of the best backup music you will ever hear from every one of them. Outstanding. Sad that Duffy is gone and this lineup will never be on stage together again.

      In the years since you wrote that, we've lost Starling and Mike. Only Tom and Ben remain.

    There is no dentist. The graphic artist is playing Dobro and singing baritone, the retired instrument repairman and luthier is playing mandolin and singing tenor, the computer analyst (they called him a "computer mathematician" in the 70s) is playing banjo, the mapmaker (and my dad) is playing bass, and the Otolaryngolical surgeon (Ear, Nose and Wallet, as Duffey called him) is playing the D45 and singing lead. Phil Rosenthal is the only one who never held a real job, as far as I know

      I knew John Starling for years. I moved and got a new doctor, I was sad when I heard he died, he was such a nice man.

    Since 1970 I've caught the Seldom Scene every Thursday nite til I headed west in '73; they were the greatest! Always had tremendous guest-Emmylou;Rondstatt;Lowell George Tony Rice;John McKuen;Byron Berline; Norman Blake;on and on-one great guest after another- The Original group with John Starling will always be my favorite ; but they have always added great Players as the Band changed

    Rich, it could not have been those years, i was there. And the transition was stark (I got to hear the Chris Stifel audition), so this woulda been Starling sitting in.

    I know that stage well, played on it several times. It was the original location in Hillsdale, NY where the Winterhawk festival was held until 2007. The Berkshires festival was last held there in 1980, so the video had to be from '78, '79 or '80 to have both Phil Rosenthal on that stage.
    If someone really wants to sleuth this and has the old festival programs, at 3:11 in, John Duffey's watch shows 12:35 AM. Keep in mind that the shows at this festival always ran late as the day went on.

    • @fairsherrr
      @fairsherrr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ran late, you say? Ha! Ran well into the next day. I lived a mile away and remember dragging ourselves home at 3 a.m. or later and waking up sometime mid-morning w/ my feet tapping as they started up again. BTW, the festival actually was in Ancramdale. They used Hillsdale since it was at least on the map! Such good times~thanks for the memories.

      I remember this night like it was yesterday, every time I watch this video it brings goosebumps. The whole night was magical, but this set was the best of them all (except maybe the last set with everyone jamming at about 3:00AM!)

    This was the Duanesburg stage... not the original sight in Ancramdale.
    The late, legendary Mike Auldridge playing his favorite reso -- #426 Regal/Dobro.

    Just last night was playing the Johnny Rivers version of this excellent song. It's on his 1974 Atlantic LP ROAD, got Linda Ronstadt on background vocals. If Seldom Scene have been around since 1970 did they record it first?

    Yes, that's John Starling barging in, kicking Phil to the curb - best sound ever, these five. Tom Gray, superb on bass, Mike Auldridge on the dobro..a heart could swoon down into the depth s of this very fine song** I once wrote an article for the Blueprint newspaper on Clair Lynch and John Starling performing together at the Birchmere. Those were the days****
