  • Puppy Training 101 - What To Expect The First Year // Puppy training can be a great way to bond with your new dog and teach them manners at the same time. In this video, we are going to discuss what to expect the first year with a new puppy. Whether your dog is an 8-week old puppy or a little older you’re going to need these new puppy tips. Bringing home a new puppy and preparing for a new puppy are super exciting times. Keep in mind your puppy expectations should be low and your patience high as training begins. Your puppy essentials and dog supplies will be minimal but you’ll want to be prepared ahead of time. Your pup’s first day home can be a little scary for your new furry friend. In the coming weeks, you may experience potty accidents, puppy biting, barking and you’ll definitely be working on crate training.

We are now almost hitting the 1 year mark. Our border aussie has had some car, bike, jogger chasing, nipping, excessive barking in the garden, reactive behavior to other dogs a few months ago. Most of it was quite a surprise, as in the first 6 puppy months he was like an angel 🙄 Since month 8-9 we apply more strict rules what kind of behaviour we like and dislike. And since we learned our daughter and him the meaning of the word NO the boy is much easier to handle. No more chasing, only occasional barking and lunging to other dogs only occurs when the other dog shoots first so to speak 😆 And of course: we reward good behaviour. But we also correct behaviour we dislike, and then immediately reward a good decision. Works like a charm, but you must be on top of it and anticipate his reactions.
Thanks for all the great advice in your videos, it has helped us a lot! 👍🏻

My puppy turned 8 months old today! I think we're in the regression stage, but he's still good with sit, wait at the door, and down. Recall is fantastic, even If I'm hiding from him. We still need to work on impulse control, but overall, he is a very good, attentive puppy. He's getting easier to manage now that he's done teething and doesn't have to put everything in his mouth. He's great on walks though the neighborhood and on forest trails. Thank you, HTTDD team for your instruction and encouragement along the way!

Hello from Dallas. So glad I found your page. We have a 4 month old Golden Retriever...we love him but boy did we forget how the puppy stage goes. He literally wants to put everything in his mouth... everything. He has been approved to now go out into the world, per the vet, and start the socialization process as he has enough vaccinations to protect him. We will be looking for leash training video's and loved that you said to get them use to the leash in the house or drive way first. The few times we walked the sidewalk he definitely wasn't a fan or sure what to do. Also he has gotten little snappy with us when he has something in his mouth we need him to drop for safety and if we try to grab it from him he'll nip/snap at us or run and play the " catch me if you can" game... we have so much to learn.

I’m so glad I found you on TH-cam. After an amazing 14yrs with my last dog (also my first dog ever) Miss Molly that passed away Dec 14th 2022 I’m gearing up to adopt another puppy. Even though I own my own dog walking business it has been 14yrs since a puppy has been in my life. Getting my place set up is my goal for the next few weeks to a month. Then the search will start. Thankfully I’m one that believes in a connection is important vs a cute face. I’m watching your videos as well as just making sure everything will be ready for when the right pup is coming home with me. Will for sure be watching these videos multiple times 🐾🥰🐶

I got my little rescue pup at 12 weeks. Wish I had been able to get her at 8 weeks, as foster did no training during that critical time. She was just allowed to run wild with the rest of her large litter and other foster dogs. Very little socialization was done, no crate or leash training, and she was extremely skinny because all the other dogs got to the food first.
10.5 months now, still a little wild but greatly improved. Your videos helped me a lot and I really appreciate it.
Just a bit of constructive criticism, because I really do like your videos and they are helpful, but I find your background music to be a little loud and distracting. You don’t really need music; I like to concentrate on what you’re saying. Thanks!

Hi from Australia. Thanks for the look ahead. Life with our two 12 week old caboodles has been hugely rewarding, but hard work as the puppies have slept, ate and pee’d their way happily through each day. Trying to keep one step ahead of them has been challenging, but we are getting better at picking up the signals they give us, the floor puddles are declining and their ability to focus is increasing - so basic commands (come, sit, down) are being mastered as are the first tentative steps on a leash. But they are both delightful, have bonded with everyone they meet - including the chickens - and have rewarded us with much affection and pleasure. It helps that they love their crates and are just about sleeping through the night.

My 8-mo old standard poodle is in the regression stage. She was so easy to train & play with as a younger & smaller puppy. She loved training & attention, but for the past month, she's gone crazy with jumping, biting & general mischief. She is easily distracted on walks & around other dogs. Thankfully, she's was potty trained by the time she was 3 months, so that has not been an issue in this regression stage. But I am experiencing the puppy blues for the first time. I know that she was so easy that I became a bit complacent, so it's my fault. I have your course, so I think I'll go back & rewatch it.

Our two were bewildered at being with people they barely knew and in a home that was new to them. We were just hyper-excited (and nervous) at having our new companions and - to be honest - anxious at doing something that we might later regret. Luckily, we had decided that the number 1 priority was simply to love them - so that’s what we did. The only thing we tried to teach was where their toileting area was (outside). That’s what we did for about 3 days, until we could see the puppies visibly start to relax - then we began to introduce some structure into their daily routines. The dividend.? Two little ones that happily follow us around, come when they are called and (still erratically) pee and poo in the right place 😀

When is the phase where your dog acts like you don't exist except when you have food and after that goes back to acting like you don't exist? That is the phase that my Lurcher X Border Collie is going through and I am seriously struggling with it. I've had her for 2 months (she is 20 weeks) and from day 1 she just has no interest in us. Great question, this happens when the mechanics are off in the trianing process or we've pushed too fast and the pup wasn't able to move to that next step yet, we also have to consider the environmental distractions when are pups's seem as if they aren't interested in us. If you ever wanted help with those mechanics (hand placement, timing, when to progress to the next level of difficulty we can help you at the pro-level of our online program.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

We have to do our due diligence to make sure all their needs are met. Has he or she been well exercised mentally and physically thoughout the day, need a little more food, or a potty break?
While it is important to teach our puppies to be ok with being alone, we also have to keep them under threshold (panic mode) while doing so. If they panic to the point of having an accident or borderline hurting themselves, we are creating a negative experience.
The single best thing you can do is work on this outside of the time it’s happening. We have to set aside time to proactively build their confidence while alone and awake in the crate. Here's another video to check out! th-cam.com/video/rnMFXmzh_Cc/w-d-xo.html

Just had my 8 month dachshund/ Jack Russell neutered.
It’s been a week and he’s off the scale difficult- are the last of his hormone highs still raging???
    What is going on???
    This was totally unexpected.
He’s pulling hard on the leash, wilful, deaf to recall, having midnight zoomies, barking at 3 in the morning - infact barking at anyone and anything.
    What have I done?
I was told that neutering would bring down his full-on high energy nature - not completely of course, but enough to see a difference gradually.
Anyone had a similar experience with neutering?
    And anyone any advice? Please!!!
I’m an experienced dog owner, on my own, and partially disabled, and I’m truly loosing the plot.
