Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland has a dynamic, varied and delicious food scene. If you love to eat, this is the city for you. In this 5 part video series we’re taking you to our favourite spots along Dominion Road- Auckland’s iconic street for tasty, affordable eats.
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland has a food scene like nowhere else in NZ. In this 5 part video series we’re doing a deep dive into the food culture of Dominion Rd- a street lined with 108 restaurants offering cuisines from all around the world.
In this video we’re transported to Indonesia at as we tuck into nasi goreng and Javanese street food at Raos, a newly opened restaurant already making a name for itself for its traditional flavours. Our tastebuds travel to Northwestern China as we feast on hand pulled noodles and Dominion Road’s best dumplings at Shaolin Kungfu noodle and then its off to Ho Chi Minh City where VietKitchen, a family run restaurant with a huge local following churns out Vietnam’s most popular dishes. We’re hunting down Auckland’s best eats, hit subscribe and get ready for some mouthwatering food.

What we ate and where we ate it:
1. Iga bakar, ayam bakar bumbu rujak, batagor and nasi goreng at Raos, 433 Dominion Road, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024. Open 7 days 12:00pm to 9:00pm.
2. Kung Fu Goji Berry Noodles, Xinjiang lamb fried noodles and lamb and fennel pan fried dumplings at Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles, 636 Dominion Road, Mount Eden, Auckland 1041. Open 7 days 11:30am to 10:30pm.
3. Viet Kitchen has closed for good :( Pho, bun thit nuong and banh xeo at Viet Kitchen.

It’s good to know some of those places are still going strong. I worked at the Auckland Museum for 20 years from 1989-2009, back then Dominion Rd among other delicious cuisines, had my favourite Roast Duck restaurant, (last visited before covid), New Market had my favourite Mexican and Italian restaurants (not sure if they still exist) Parnell had my favourite Thai restaurant and Mt Eden had my favourite Dona Kebarb’s street food vendor (no longer exists). We are definitely spoiled for choice. Kia ora korua

Ahhh, you've done it again! What a treat to get to see in the kitchens of all those food artists. The noodles have me weak at the knees. And I'd call everything you ate comfort food. I really need to get to see more of Indonesia than the little I got to experience in 2012. "Kambing" is actually goat meat.
My next trip across the Ditch looks like three or four weeks in Auckland eating out two or three times a day.

Definitely going to Dominion Rd Auckland when I get a chance. Heard of so many great Vietnamese restaurants there. I want to compare with the ones in Melbourne Australia. 👍

What a small world this is. I grew up in Richmond. Only moved out of there 10 years ago. Would you say Vietnamese food in Auckland is better or Melbourne. Honest unbiased answer would be greatly appreciated..
@@Jordanphil23 😍 that’s awesome! The Vietnamese population isn’t as large as in Melbourne and so there isn’t a lot of choice when it comes to epic Vietnamese restaurants unlike in Melbourne where you can quickly reel off half a dozen spots which are brilliant and affordable. I’d say Melbourne definitely trumps our Vietnamese food scene but this spot we showcased and a few spots out in Otahuhu definitely stack up in the flavour stakes!

I thought Nasi Goreng is Malay cuisine so Indonesian share that same type of menu. Going into the Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle seems like entering the temple and Thomas already shaved his head before eating those lamb noodles & dumplings. Then he got some of his grown hair prior entering the Vietnamese cuisine so they've tried out three different cuisines in separate weeks in this video. Overall! I like all the foods they had in all three restaurants so always thumbs up to Chasing a Plate host by Thomas & Sheena.

The true etymology of “pho” is unknown but the more often attribute is to Cantonese “fun” although some try to fancy it up by saying it’s due to the French stew “pot au feu.” Whatever. Calling it a “noodle soup” is exactly what most Vietnamese cooks say. And it’s well documented that Vietnamese pho chefs young and old say pho refers specifically to the rice noodles as well as the overall dish. Ugh. I’m distracted. I gotta stop reading the comments while watching the video. 😬
