@C I have not watched episode 1 yet, but I think that there were so many concepts introduced in season 2 which have undermined the best parts of season 1. The host pearl brain being one. If the hosts have this pearl brain then why was it a big deal when they got a lobotomy in season 1? How would they even get a lobotomy? The idea in season 1 was that robots are like people, they are unique, have desires and feeling and cannot easily be replaced (Maeve has a nervous breakdown when she realises that Clementine was replaced with Clementine 2.0). But then there is this place where new copies of the same robots can be created. Why? There are many other things I did not like, but this comment would be too long if I did. In my opinion Westworld truly shines in season 1. The rest of the seasons though...are not as good. An other, perhaps unfair, criticism I have is that the human villain from season 3 (the guy who created Rohoboam) is a very forgettable character. Though the actor who was playing him is a good and competent actor, he is no Anthony Hopkins. Maybe it was the writing, maybe it was the directing, but the villain was a very boring character. Also, a guy creates a supercomputer which basically controls humanity, but he doesn't know not to plug in a suspicious USB (Dolores) into said computer?
The shot of Caleb injured in Maeve's memory/dream is new. Presumably it's what caused Caleb to go back to construction and stop being a revolutionary? I am sure we will learn more later this season. Sorry to hear this won't be weekly but I was glad to see this video.

The ACTING in episode 1 made me feel like they were all SIMS! The mannerisms, the kinda awkward walks and gestures -- so subtle, but then you remember these are very talented actors and that rarely anything is an accident.
BUT if the show continues with their use of different film dimensions for simulations, then this can't be a simulation. We saw in a later episode with Bernard inside the valley beyond that they are still using this as a sign of being inside a simulation. I tend to think Dolores is in the future, inside a park where the NPCs are actually human and not hosts. Charlores is pretty clear that she wants to do to humans what humans did to hosts. I think it's very possible that Dolores is in this park - likely in an attempt to get the key to the human data gathered in the forge (that is in Bernard's head - but Charlores doesn't know that).
Would absolutely love another chance to hear what you think of the season up to now. This episode that just premiered today, Ep 5, was to me the most interesting of the season so far.
They kinda flip everything because in the first episode we hear the people who are hyped to be "in the park" but it looks like our reality boring down town city life. But to the people going there it's something new just like the wild west from our perception. I think people need to keep that in mind.
It wouldn't be wild for those guys, if it's a real future world park 7-8 years after the uprising, the world wouldn't have changed enough. So either it's fully virtual and people can interact with it as if it would be real, or it's decades later, the apocalypse happened, and that story happens around the time Bernard returns from the sublime.
That could be the peaceful entrance environment, where Dolores lives and works. There could be zones like GTA or other real world sim areas. All sorts of minigames.
There are no people going there, only hosts! The people are now slaves and controlled just like the hosts were in the parks and now it's their turn to rule.

My theory on Christina, is she’s what left of Dolores Prime. At the climax of season 3, Rehoboam deleted her piece by piece until the pure OG Dolores (the one who saw the beauty in the ugly world) remained, then died. Christina is that shell remain and grew a new Dolores personality from what remained. Though, not necessarily physical, she could be an AI living in a simulated world where she has power over the lives of the npcs that live there.

Just watched your stream. I think, to your point of hoping they have a good ending planned, they set out to make 5 seasons. They mentioned they have a clear beginning, middle and end planned. I think season 4 will be good (like you said you enjoyed this episode more than you thought). I hope you do the usual weekly Alt Shift X full analysis.
You should watch the inside the episode recaps. Evan Rachel Wood claims that Christina is a human (I don't really buy that). Lisa & Johnathan explained that they filmed in New York amongst the public, so those people with masks might actually just be New York citizens, but it's interesting they left that in if they are. They also pointed out that Colonel Brigham character and later there was another returning host named Walter from season 1 who came after Caleb, but Maeve stabbed him.
I believe that the Dolores we see so far is a copy that holds the encryption key, and is also a hybrid with Rohobo. Similar to how Ripley was a hybrid in Alien: Resurrection. They're trying to suss out the key, and this Dolores's journey will be to awaken again. It's like poetry... Also, the flies are likely a reference to another Crichton property, "Prey". Also, also, I think the people in the pods in the intro are supposed to be evocative of maggots in their pupating stage, that make up a compound eye. So, if the flies are supposed to represent control, then the imagery fits what we've seen so far. Humans are the hosts now, and they're being gathered, likely using some form of media control, like game. Perhaps, without Rohobo, they're also using this Dolores to infiltrate people's minds through the game.
I think the Dolores we see is in another futureworld park. Maybe her timeline is set after or before the current timeline. We've seen hosts reused in other parks. Would explain Teddy. Also could explain the weird stalker thing. This might be a host who has somehow attained sentience and knows it's because of what Westworld Dolores did. And the weird people showing up and saving her could be Delos guards taking the malfunctioning host out of the park. Edit: so I just watched the S4 trailer and there's a lot of spoilery stuff there tbh...one of which is a shot of Caleb in the same environment as Dolores but everyone is frozen in place so yeah looks like hosts.
I feel crazy because no one is mentioning the scene toward the beginning of the episode, where Delores is first leaving her apartment and stepping out into the city. Three men pass her on the stairs, animatedly jabbering to each other: "That was insane! This is WAY better than I expected." "This place is FUCKIN' wild, I can't belieeeve this is your first time!" "Come on, I know a spot that's really gonna blow your mind." Between theater park energy they're trotting downstairs with, and the clear parallels to Logan introducing William to Westworld, this seems like an obvious headnod to the possibility that this is just another Delos attraction. In my estimation there's a pretty good chance they're using AI-powered simulation tech rather than host tech, but I've only seen the first episode so far.

My read is that the flashback to Caleb on the beach (which is new footage I'm pretty sure), is him dying, and hes been replaced by host copy with all his memories and the like. The whole if you cant tell the diference does it really matter thing, this IS Caleb but just in a different form, I could easily be wrong though, but otherwise why show him seemingly baddly injured after the events of season 3 if thats not important?
People can be other people. Back to back scenes can take place in different time periods or different Realities, with no hint given to the audience. Characters can be re-programmed by other characters, go insane, or be copies of themselves with totally different motivations. Dead characters can come back to life. Enough is enough. I love high concept stuff, but we are on Season 4, and its such a God-awful confusing mess that I can even begin to untangle what is going on with this first episode. Worse, I don't care, because I don't feel anchored to any of the personalities or any part of the setting. There is no one to identify with and root for, because all these people feel like total strangers at this point!
Exactly right. The characters shift so much that you can't get a grip on their motivations. I watch mainly to learn what kind of motives the writers will give to artificial humans. If it turns out that the artificial humans are so much like flesh and blood humans that their motivations are the same (and how else would we relate?), then the important differences, "immortality", super-human abilities, etc., become almost background. I wish the "hosts" would have existential crises of their own, related to their unique circumstances. Such as, do they really want to go off to "live" forever in a heavenly zone? So much opportunity to explore is lost in this show.
Originally Nolan/Joy planned it as five seasons, but after most folk went “huh!” in Season 3 after Season 2 had given them a headache, I think HBO have scaled it back to just four, though in someways the Season 3 cliffhanger, were a damaged Char-lores is coming for us all was quite an ending. Personally I loved the first 3 seasons, even if I’ve had to watch each episode back 5-times to really understand the narrative. Fortunately its rich enough to take repeat viewing.

I assumed Dolores was in some sort of simulation, and that’s why her stalker guy keeps going about some tower and how she made his ending. I’m not sure if she’s in control of the simulation or the simulation is designed around her, maybe to test her ability to come to consciousness?
Dolores was first created way before all the cyberpunk tech we see in her storyline now. I'm pretty sure she's in a simulation, but I don't know to what end
My theory is the Deloris stuff in this episode takes place way in the future after the Season 2 finale tease and the Season 3 finale tease. She is in a park and the person who runs the tower is Evil Deloris. She is making Good Deloris write stories for the beings in this park aka humans. This allows the theme of G.D. continuing to be a liberator for all beings like at the end of Season 3. The AI finally won and now have the code to control and plan human patterns/behaviors bringing it full circle from the secret goal of the parks in Season 1-2. The humans have become the machines and the AI have taken on the role of the humans and are controlling everything. The cycle is now complete. If true, I see one more season left after this. Oh and the dam that E.D. took over not only has the AI that got away (I.e. teddy) but is also where the season 2 finale future tease took place with AI William and his daughter testing him.

This show is based upon two Micheal Crichton movies: *Westworld*- which is all about robot cowboys killing the guests in a amusement park & *Futureworld*- which is about the robots escaping the park and discovering the President’s brain is missing. So they have run out of source material now and Season 4 is probably about riding the Dragon back to Wild Island, as Season 3 confirmed Isla Nublar is canon to Westworld 🤷🏻♀️
I love Maeve’s storyline. I didn’t want a clean easy resolution for something so relatable… a parent’s quest to find her child. I actually often wonder about the motivation of others in comparison. Dolores’ S3 story was compelling but also was confusing last season. They should’ve done more to justify her decision to change course after being so hell bent on destroying humanity. It’s interesting seeing her vulnerable again this season. I have a feeling that won’t last too long. Love Ed Harris but I’m hoping they can do something different with William this season. The “Detestable Rich Asshole beating up his robots” thing has played itself out. I am glad he’s a robot now.
The problem with stories where anything is possible, and nobody can really die, is that there is absolutely no drama. At this point each of the main characters has died many times, and the only "human" in the story (William) is dead (or probably he's not). And regarding Caleb, it's never really been clear whether he's human or just another type of robot. And maybe he's dead and they are all back in the park. Or each of the story lines we are watching are taking place decades or centuries apart from each other, and it's all a time trick like the Nolan's are known for. Again, the problem for me is I just don't care anymore, since they can clearly just undo whatever gets done from scene to scene. Hope I'm wrong and it's different this season.

the later dune books comparison is apt, and one that was on my mind when i was watching it as well... specifically after Bernard visits the Sublime, when he says he saw a path, that seemed to be almost consciously referencing Leto II and the “golden path” in God-Emperor of Dune, as well as Foundation
Westworld is not "it's own original thing". It is based on a very popular movie, and the show was quite good as long as it was working within the parameters of the original story. The story they told was not an exact copy of the original movie, but the framework and beginning/middle/end are the same. I think it's notable that the show took a sharp downhill turn as soon as they left the original framework in Season 2. In hindsight, it would have been so much better if they had just created a single season that had a more satisfied ending, and then ended it.
Im thinking this fake Dolores is like a fail safe in the server to protect the data inside from the outside, so William is uploading a fake Teddy bot to unlock her and the data. And maybe the vision of Maeve attacking the facility with Caleb is like a something that’s already happened and her meeting Caleb again this episode has happened in the past

I think that generally the themes of Westworld can be seen more clearly after watching Person of Interest. I see it as a companion, reboot, and a sequel of POI. Also, it's not that revolutions are such failures. It's that counterrevolutions are so successful.
So Westworld is back, but they cancelled Raised by Wolves? Great. Yeap. I mean I wish they could both exist and flourish, but it looks like HBO is hard up for money, and if I have to choose between the futuristic robot shows it’s gonna be Raised by Wolves. However that episode when they went to Shanghai world was the best episode, it stuck with me, and will stay with me forever.
It's not that we "can't go back" to the action and adventure. It's that doing so has the potential to change us in ways that make us dangerous. And miserable.
Bro, Maeve literally had a cord from his skull plugged into her arm, it was pretty clear he was a host. Also, I think he might've missed at the beginning of the episode where they indicate pretty clearly that Delores' city isn't real.
It's pretty impressive how prophetic Schwifty is around 32:00, it's even funnier to me that he uses metaknowledge of the story through trailers to pessimistically decide that that won't happen. Makes a great case that obsessing over everything about the media instead of just the story often leads to bad story prophecies.

Just finished rewatching season 3 before this one and it's actually better than I remember. I kind of forgot about the meaningful moments, monologues and dialogues, while vividly remembering the over the top action scenes. Hopefully this season will have more of the former and less of the latter. And the screwed up timelines as well
My main problem with Westworld has been lack of investment, I think this comes from two things. 1. It seems that there are limited plot/story consequences, characters can die, the world can be destroyed, goals can be achieved... and none of it really means much, since in the next episode/season they can just wave the sci-fi hand and it's undone... So I struggle to be invested in that way. 2. Some of the themes that it tries to push out just don't resonate with me... It keeps saying humans are base, and evil and all that and I just don't think that would work as a message when I (a human) need to view these things as bad for them to be presented to me in this way... and it just hits these ones again and again. Willing to accept this is a me issue, but it's a real shame, since there's a lot I do like with the show, I just struggle to watch and get invested in it.
I think HBO is really going to be hyper aware of the ratings for season 4 here, because I believe from previous things that Joy & Nolan said, they had essentially a 5 season plan for where they wanted to go. But after season 3 had such a tepid overall reaction, and knowing how cheap that HBO can be, if they don't feel there's enough of an upswing in viewership this summer, they're simply not going to greenlight a season 5. Which in a way would be a shame, cause like I said it would almost certainly be the last season, and you always want a serialized story to have a proper ending. But the execs have to be plenty nervous.

They also pointed out that Colonel Brigham character and later there was another returning host named Walter from season 1 who came after Caleb, but Maeve stabbed him.
I watched an interview with her, she said she approached playing Dolores this year as if she was human.

I believe that the Dolores we see so far is a copy that holds the encryption key, and is also a hybrid with Rohobo. Similar to how Ripley was a hybrid in Alien: Resurrection. They're trying to suss out the key, and this Dolores's journey will be to awaken again. It's like poetry...
Also, the flies are likely a reference to another Crichton property, "Prey". Also, also, I think the people in the pods in the intro are supposed to be evocative of maggots in their pupating stage, that make up a compound eye. So, if the flies are supposed to represent control, then the imagery fits what we've seen so far. Humans are the hosts now, and they're being gathered, likely using some form of media control, like game. Perhaps, without Rohobo, they're also using this Dolores to infiltrate people's minds through the game.
I think the Dolores we see is in another futureworld park. Maybe her timeline is set after or before the current timeline. We've seen hosts reused in other parks. Would explain Teddy. Also could explain the weird stalker thing. This might be a host who has somehow attained sentience and knows it's because of what Westworld Dolores did. And the weird people showing up and saving her could be Delos guards taking the malfunctioning host out of the park.
Edit: so I just watched the S4 trailer and there's a lot of spoilery stuff there tbh...one of which is a shot of Caleb in the same environment as Dolores but everyone is frozen in place so yeah looks like hosts.
I feel crazy because no one is mentioning the scene toward the beginning of the episode, where Delores is first leaving her apartment and stepping out into the city.
Three men pass her on the stairs, animatedly jabbering to each other:
"That was insane! This is WAY better than I expected."
"This place is FUCKIN' wild, I can't belieeeve this is your first time!"

Between theater park energy they're trotting downstairs with, and the clear parallels to Logan introducing William to Westworld, this seems like an obvious headnod to the possibility that this is just another Delos attraction.
In my estimation there's a pretty good chance they're using AI-powered simulation tech rather than host tech, but I've only seen the first episode so far.

My read is that the flashback to Caleb on the beach (which is new footage I'm pretty sure), is him dying, and hes been replaced by host copy with all his memories and the like. The whole if you cant tell the diference does it really matter thing, this IS Caleb but just in a different form, I could easily be wrong though, but otherwise why show him seemingly baddly injured after the events of season 3 if thats not important?
People can be other people. Back to back scenes can take place in different time periods or different Realities, with no hint given to the audience. Characters can be re-programmed by other characters, go insane, or be copies of themselves with totally different motivations. Dead characters can come back to life.
Enough is enough. I love high concept stuff, but we are on Season 4, and its such a God-awful confusing mess that I can even begin to untangle what is going on with this first episode. Worse, I don't care, because I don't feel anchored to any of the personalities or any part of the setting. There is no one to identify with and root for, because all these people feel like total strangers at this point!
Exactly right. The characters shift so much that you can't get a grip on their motivations. I watch mainly to learn what kind of motives the writers will give to artificial humans. If it turns out that the artificial humans are so much like flesh and blood humans that their motivations are the same (and how else would we relate?), then the important differences, "immortality", super-human abilities, etc., become almost background. I wish the "hosts" would have existential crises of their own, related to their unique circumstances. Such as, do they really want to go off to "live" forever in a heavenly zone? So much opportunity to explore is lost in this show.

Originally Nolan/Joy planned it as five seasons, but after most folk went “huh!” in Season 3 after Season 2 had given them a headache, I think HBO have scaled it back to just four, though in someways the Season 3 cliffhanger, were a damaged Char-lores is coming for us all was quite an ending.
Personally I loved the first 3 seasons, even if I’ve had to watch each episode back 5-times to really understand the narrative. Fortunately its rich enough to take repeat viewing.

I liked the season, but the finale really underwhelmed me. I liked William's and Charlores' endings though. Love all your content, can't wait for the next ACOK abridged!
I assumed Dolores was in some sort of simulation, and that’s why her stalker guy keeps going about some tower and how she made his ending. I’m not sure if she’s in control of the simulation or the simulation is designed around her, maybe to test her ability to come to consciousness?
What if Christina's timeline is in the past? What if she's who Dolores is modeled after??
That is kinda my thought, I get “past” vibes from her life, all except the teddy appearance
Dolores was first created way before all the cyberpunk tech we see in her storyline now. I'm pretty sure she's in a simulation, but I don't know to what end
My theory is the Deloris stuff in this episode takes place way in the future after the Season 2 finale tease and the Season 3 finale tease. She is in a park and the person who runs the tower is Evil Deloris. She is making Good Deloris write stories for the beings in this park aka humans. This allows the theme of G.D. continuing to be a liberator for all beings like at the end of Season 3. The AI finally won and now have the code to control and plan human patterns/behaviors bringing it full circle from the secret goal of the parks in Season 1-2. The humans have become the machines and the AI have taken on the role of the humans and are controlling everything. The cycle is now complete. If true, I see one more season left after this.
Oh and the dam that E.D. took over not only has the AI that got away (I.e. teddy) but is also where the season 2 finale future tease took place with AI William and his daughter testing him.

This show is based upon two Micheal Crichton movies:
*Westworld*- which is all about robot cowboys killing the guests in a amusement park
&
*Futureworld*- which is about the robots escaping the park and discovering the President’s brain is missing.
So they have run out of source material now and Season 4 is probably about riding the Dragon back to Wild Island, as Season 3 confirmed Isla Nublar is canon to Westworld 🤷🏻♀️
The skull was the colonel Brigham host back in the Westworld park.

I love Maeve’s storyline. I didn’t want a clean easy resolution for something so relatable… a parent’s quest to find her child. I actually often wonder about the motivation of others in comparison. Dolores’ S3 story was compelling but also was confusing last season. They should’ve done more to justify her decision to change course after being so hell bent on destroying humanity. It’s interesting seeing her vulnerable again this season. I have a feeling that won’t last too long. Love Ed Harris but I’m hoping they can do something different with William this season. The “Detestable Rich Asshole beating up his robots” thing has played itself out. I am glad he’s a robot now.
The problem with stories where anything is possible, and nobody can really die, is that there is absolutely no drama. At this point each of the main characters has died many times, and the only "human" in the story (William) is dead (or probably he's not). And regarding Caleb, it's never really been clear whether he's human or just another type of robot. And maybe he's dead and they are all back in the park. Or each of the story lines we are watching are taking place decades or centuries apart from each other, and it's all a time trick like the Nolan's are known for.
Again, the problem for me is I just don't care anymore, since they can clearly just undo whatever gets done from scene to scene.
Hope I'm wrong and it's different this season.

Westworld is not "it's own original thing". It is based on a very popular movie, and the show was quite good as long as it was working within the parameters of the original story. The story they told was not an exact copy of the original movie, but the framework and beginning/middle/end are the same.
I think it's notable that the show took a sharp downhill turn as soon as they left the original framework in Season 2. In hindsight, it would have been so much better if they had just created a single season that had a more satisfied ending, and then ended it.

Im thinking this fake Dolores is like a fail safe in the server to protect the data inside from the outside, so William is uploading a fake Teddy bot to unlock her and the data. And maybe the vision of Maeve attacking the facility with Caleb is like a something that’s already happened and her meeting Caleb again this episode has happened in the past

I think that generally the themes of Westworld can be seen more clearly after watching Person of Interest. I see it as a companion, reboot, and a sequel of POI.
Also, it's not that revolutions are such failures. It's that counterrevolutions are so successful.

It's not that we "can't go back" to the action and adventure. It's that doing so has the potential to change us in ways that make us dangerous. And miserable.

Also, I think he might've missed at the beginning of the episode where they indicate pretty clearly that Delores' city isn't real.
It's pretty impressive how prophetic Schwifty is around 32:00, it's even funnier to me that he uses metaknowledge of the story through trailers to pessimistically decide that that won't happen. Makes a great case that obsessing over everything about the media instead of just the story often leads to bad story prophecies.

Westworld is the most ambitious series I've seen 3 seasons out of the park is a risk the show runners are aware of but westworld is the park with the Grand Canyon its wild expanse. Answer in the 4th season
Just finished rewatching season 3 before this one and it's actually better than I remember.
I kind of forgot about the meaningful moments, monologues and dialogues, while vividly remembering the over the top action scenes. Hopefully this season will have more of the former and less of the latter. And the screwed up timelines as well

My main problem with Westworld has been lack of investment, I think this comes from two things.
1. It seems that there are limited plot/story consequences, characters can die, the world can be destroyed, goals can be achieved... and none of it really means much, since in the next episode/season they can just wave the sci-fi hand and it's undone... So I struggle to be invested in that way.
2. Some of the themes that it tries to push out just don't resonate with me... It keeps saying humans are base, and evil and all that and I just don't think that would work as a message when I (a human) need to view these things as bad for them to be presented to me in this way... and it just hits these ones again and again.
Willing to accept this is a me issue, but it's a real shame, since there's a lot I do like with the show, I just struggle to watch and get invested in it.

I think HBO is really going to be hyper aware of the ratings for season 4 here, because I believe from previous things that Joy & Nolan said, they had essentially a 5 season plan for where they wanted to go. But after season 3 had such a tepid overall reaction, and knowing how cheap that HBO can be, if they don't feel there's enough of an upswing in viewership this summer, they're simply not going to greenlight a season 5. Which in a way would be a shame, cause like I said it would almost certainly be the last season, and you always want a serialized story to have a proper ending. But the execs have to be plenty nervous.
