How to Survive a Falling Elevator

  • The average office building elevator works about 10 hours a day, and it makes 400,000 trips a year. That's roughly the number of my trips to the fridge in times of social isolation. Getting stuck in an elevator is unpleasant. It happens to one in every 5,000 rides. But there's nothing deadly about that.
Finding yourself in a free-falling elevator is quite rare, one in 10 million. You have a better chance of being killed by a bear in Yellowstone National Park.
But if you ever do happen to be in a situation like this, can you save yourself by jumping up in the air?

How to Survive is a web series that takes you on a journey to the most dangerous places in the Universe and human mind. Enjoy the show and learn how to survive whatever awaits you.

    1. don’t jump before it hits the bottom
    2. don’t brace yourself
    3. lay down & protect head with hands
    4. don’t stress, stay calm and enjoy the ride 🤪

Elevators usually don't fall, there's actually a safety mechanism that's in place to prevent such things, its a braking system underneath the elevator that if it goes to fast, brakes will apply even if there is no power, and it will stop the elevator, and the odds in this video are even more slim than mentioned
Its 1 in about 25000 trips that a elevator will stop working, more or less depending on how new the elevator is or its condition,
and even if so, it is extremely unlikely the brakes will fail, you have a higher chance of being struck by lightning than getting in a freefall elevator.
elevators have been around for a long time and there's been very little recorded freefall accidents so don't worry

In 2013 I happened to be inside an elevator when it fell down. I didn't do anything but shouting Nooooo!!!! I destabilized, my legs bent, my knees hit each other with mild rupture of the meniscus, my left foot levitated and my right foot absorbed most of the impact. Both the tibia and fibula were broken, as well as the five metatarsals. My back hit one of the walls, one of my thumbs suffered a slight hurt and that was it. I ended sitting on the floor, and a few minutes later the pain started along with bruises everywhere. But I'm here, still alive. There have been consequences, the principal one is the post-traumatc stress disorder. I've never used an elevator again and I suffer from time to time some pain in one of my knees.

Here's my story... there the worst I climb 8 floors to my home everyday than rather go in an elevator a few days ago when I was really tired and I was with a friend the doors had a hard time closing but we thought nothing of it suddenly the outside door closed but the inside was open... and we got stuck WE COULD FREE FALL then the elevator started shaking and open a little keep in mind the bell wasn't working and our elevator aren't the cheap ones anyway so idk how this happened we were screaming for help as loud as we could but no one heard us... the doors opened a bit and I ran our knowing there was a chance I could be pulled up but was my friend was coming out the elevator door slightly got narrow and she got stuck I started pulling her and got her out... we've never used the elevator since
    BTW: IK yall don't care

Fun fact: When most commercial elevators "fall", they fall up.

I remember when when I was a little kid I didn't want to go to the elevator because I was scared that it was going to fall down or something so
Every time we go to a mall or a two floor store we always take the stairs

If the elevator shaft is normal, with all the doors shut (because the elevator is not "at" a particular floor), the elevator will be cushioned a lot by the air trapped underneath it. And if it's a recently made elevator, where particular attention is given to having an elevator "well fitted" to the elevator shaft, that cushion will be incredibly effective in slowing down the max drop speed.
But what to do to maximize survival?
When you start the drop, whip off your belt, lift the roof door (ALL Elevators have them) enough to trap the buckle above the roof door. Get a good grip on the belt, suspending yourself under the roof door, and hold on for dear life. The force of impact when the elevator hits bottom will almost certainly make you lose your grip on the belt, but NOT before you have expended a considerable amount of your momentum. Possibly even reducing it by half. Possibly changing a fatal accident into an impact that breaks no bones. Also aiding you will be that the elevator roof, on impact, will bend downward with you, at a diminished speed, and improve the effectiveness of your belt-grip deceleration . The object is to survive...not look cool.

@@deanstrachan448 didn't say it was the be-all-and-end-all, but simple physics that the better the air blockage below the elevator the more speed restriction, however slight that might be.

If you get two friends to hold a board and have you standing on it. then they let go of the board you will feel no pain. Now repeat but lie flat on the board. when the board hits the ground you will feel significant impact pain even at this modest height.
What matters is the magnitude of the change in acceleration and the impact time as in how much time it takes for the change in acceleration to occur.
Observe any animal jumping from a height and it will hold its body in such a position to create the longest impact time possible, thus spreading the change in acceleration over a longer time period. this slows down the change in acceleration at any one time for the softest landing possible. Landing on a hard surface in a flat lying position will create a hard bone shattering impact.
The same laws of Physics hold true inside a falling elevator.
