Plants don’t like sudden and intense exposure to sun. In the beginning I put my first plant out in the sun to “sunbathe” thinking it would like it but it got sunburned too. Common new beginner plant mistake. I never did that again

Tim is so lucky to be gifted so many nice plants from you but is also such a good friend always helping you with moving etc. I always feel bad for him in these videos because it seems like he is being told off or made to feel silly rather than being educated on what he is doing wrong and educated on the correct way to do things.

I can relate to Timmy. I was in his position a year ago. I almost killed numerous aroids and had to rehab them back from root rot. It was an important learning experience for me. I have faith that Timmy will improve and get the hang of when to water etc.

@@lupitasmith9944 this isn’t so much of a problem if you take the plant out of the decorative pot when watering. I still do that so I can let it drain before it goes back into the decorative pot.
@msnyx823 I do as well, but clearly, not everyone makes the time for it. It can be a lot of work with life, work, chores, pets, kids and such. So it's understandable.
That was hilarious 🤣 Are you ok Tim? What a bollocking 😂 . Lots of my plants are having the same issues, and It seems to happen this time each year 😥🤷♀️ . I can never see any bugs, and very careful not to overwater. I check pots after watering, empty wet ones, and even stand the inner pot on old towels to soak up excess. I spray for bugs and fungus anyway, but of course that's too late, and they look daggy til next season. It's not as simple as Jan makes it look, is it? I don't know how those with jobs, kids or new puppies can do it all. Hope grouchy is feeling better now 🧟🤸♂️
There’s definitely a lot of effort that goes in it :) and sounds like a lot of the ‘issues’ you are explaining would just be conditional, so best to put effort into supplementing conditions rather than care :) or just wait for spring :)

When I had a roommate that had a tendency to 'help' water my plants, I got into the habit of adding a leca layer at the bottom of every pot in the common areas. It worked well enough that I do it in every pot now and don't have to worry about occasional overwatering!

Hello from Arizona! Grumpy pants Dr SPG, lol! Poor Timmy, haha! 😂I'm sure he'll be more careful with your plants, and he says you leave him great directions. I'm positive he'll be better than my hubby! I went away and left super specific directions but still came home to dead plants. He let the leaves dry out, freaked out, overwatered, and left them all sitting in water to "fix" the leaves but rotted all of the roots!

Poor little Bailey 🐶 wants to help so much; she's such a sweetie pie! 💗 I feel for Tim. A new puppy and his gorgeous plant collection is probably a little tricky finding a balance. I have to distract my cats whenever I need to do a plant overhaul and it usually ends in broken pots, soil everywhere and traumatized animals... Lol. So Tim, you're doing well 💕💜🧡🐶

The obvious tip to give Tim is: After he waters his plants drain all the cover pots 30 minutes later. Then they won’t be drowning 😀🇨🇦

Better to check the cover pot several times during the next 24h. Poles can be draining for a long time.
@@Yambataller yup! Had my roommate look after my plants and three days after draining I came home and there was a lot of water still in the pot. I told her no worries but maybe check a day later as well if you can plus I will try to have them sitting in saucers instead of cache pots to make it more visible if water is accumulating 😅
If the rootsystem in the pole is still small then some water is just not absorbed and will keep draining in my experience

That intro is a hoot ❤ poor Tim’s getting trashed! Jan be nice! He’s still new at this and there’s sooo much to have to learn!! But I appreciate knowing what happens if I get complacent. I do t tend to learn a lot if someone’s collection is perfect. My Adensonii pole is so tall I have trouble keeping it moist let alone reaching it with a bottle! It’s time to chop her I think
Ok Jan, Tim is on a different journey than you, he says he’s ok with a bit of janky leaves he said “it’s better than nothing” and you chop them anyway. Let Tim have some control too he’s willing to pest treat and fix it until new leaves come in. I’m just saying Jan, they’re his plants now, and positive reinforcement is good too!
He called his friend for help and this is not the first time he is meeting Jan. I think Timmy can take it.
Also when you are finding plants after plants soaking in water on the verge of rotting it can be unsettling 😊 and Timmy has done it before too but it was hot = easier to deal with
Well technically we started this hobby together 🫢🫢 so he should have a similar amount of experience in the grand scheme of things 😂 and if he wants conteol over his own plants he doesn’t need to call me :D haha don’t worry, we love teasing each other :) we take it light-heartedly

😮😅😂 OMG, this was so entertaining. I really loved this video so much for so many reasons. The video provided so much valuable learning content for newbies like me just walking through the process for the first time.
I loved watching you school Timmy. Let me be clear, I don’t want to see you beat people up verbally (which I don’t think you did) but seeing the banter was hysterical because you’re so straight forward. There was a trend and you pointed it out. Learners like me need to hear that. I literally laughed out loud several times!!!
You pointed out exactly what the problems were as well as what Timmy was doing well, which as a learner was quite helpful. Teaching can be challenging that way. Especially with friends!
I love your honesty and straight forwardness (is that a word?!! lol). You’re authentically you. I love that about you too! ❤
As a viewers we got to see first hand what mold looks like on a moss pole, what happens when you water too much, what happens when environment differs in different areas of your house, what can happen when you leave a plant outside too long, what happens when life gets busy, what unhealthy roots look like on a moss pole…
You may have been grumpy because you didn’t think: 1. Timmy needed so much help/schooling and your quick video turned long form when you both had limited time & 2. he basically knows the system and has you readily available as a friend so he shouldn’t need a lot of help, right? He should be a regular chop and extend pro. He’s just like the rest of us! 😂 To be honest, this ended up being a fantastic example of real life working through the process of plant care. Moss poles vs potted plants. We got to see Timmy doing the work this time and struggle through because you usually just do it for him. At least that’s what I see from the videos I’ve watched. Timmy is a great helper but you do the critical plant care work. I completely appreciated seeing Timmy work through it though. He’s the perfect example of how when environments change plants need different care even when you know the system. As we all learn your system there’s a learning curve to how we water and care for our plants and this showed that clearly.
Timmy, your plants look amazing! You are obviously doing something right for them to look so good! We all have those few plants that give us trouble. And had SPG not come over, you would’ve had bigger problems in a few weeks. Let me say, I get the water in the pot problem. Even after you water it fully, water continues to drip through. Or you’re in a hurry and just need to get it done quick so you water it in the pot. I don’t think you need to stop filling the base with amendments yet. I think going back through after you water with an empty bucket to dump the excess water would be a game changer for you! Sometimes it’s just easier to water in the pot. I get it, I do the same thing sometimes.
Things I would’ve liked to see more closely if there was better light was the damage from thrips and spider mites. These are things we talk about in the community but sometimes the visual part of what it looks like on specific tropical plant leaves can be difficult to find. Sometimes I freak out over little things like wonky new leaf growth thinking it’s bugs but it’s just a plant getting used to a new environment or being repotted. So learning the normal defects, mineral build up vs insect damage is what I’d like to see more closely myself.
Keep doing the great work you do! I love watching your videos and I appreciate learning about everything, including the ugly side of things. 😊 I know this is long winded but I had so much to say!! 😂 Take care!

I think you could do a whole series around helping people choose and decorate with plants that fit their spaces and ability/commitment level to caring for them. The transformation would be fun to see. And then you could do follow-up house calls for multiple people.

For anyone also struggling with watering frequency for poles; get in the habit of just squeezing or touching the pole in a couple places all the way down once a day or every couple days. After a while you will figure out what it feels like just before it gets crunchy and you can either water then or just adjust to lesser amounts more frequently. Personally I've gotten used to more frequent watering with less water to keep my tall poles moist but if you leave it longer just be aware the very top of the pole might get hydrophobic between watering (don't do it if you plant is at the top)
You should get used to the amount of water each size of pole needs over time but at first start with a small amount and leave it a day and see how far it soaks down the pole then adjust more if needed.
In summer you will need to water more. Fuller rooted poles need a bit more frequency as well.
At first a day after watering check the pole and the bottom for water. But once you get used to the amounts you need you won't have to checked the bottom pot as often.
The ideal is to soak the whole pole but barely leave any for the pot (if you're watering frequently) once established. If it's new on the pole I'd water the same way but also water the pot itself separately
Make sure to leave it 24hrs before adding more water as it won't have properly dispersed throughout the pole immediately and if u add more immediately you will most likely add too much
These are all great tips! I started with moss/coco poles half a year ago and by checking regularly I found the little signs of what they need! I still got mold on one recently (increased the airflow), or overwaterer one (repotted that one) but slowly you get a feel for it!

I laughed so hard that I choked while drinking! Tim called SPG for a checkup, but heard that the illness is terminal. 😝 Dr was not joking today as it was serious conditions. 😠 Love these rescue videos! There is no SPG without Timmy at this point. His experience provides much needed encouragement cause let’s face it our plants are also our teachers too and looks like Timmy is starting to get the hang of reading his plants.
He’s a great way to show ‘trial & error’ happening live in fromt of us hehe :D once he gets the hang of it & understanda the conditions in his house better there’s no stopping him :)
Sometimes I make the same mistakes as Tim....but Tim has awesome windows and direct access to YOU so really he doesn't have an excuse.

I take every single one of my plants outside to water. Why? So I can leave it to drain for an hour then bring it back inside knowing it won't be sitting in a pool of water. I learnt that early on, after drowning a few plants. It's my fool proof way to water.. Another tip is that I water my plants while sitting in a bucket, the run off / excess water I can then use to tip over outdoor plants such as my potted herbs, they get the nutrients and water out of the pot/bucket, it's not wasted. The time outdoors means the plant dries off a bit in the breeze.
