      Not necessarily. Education narrows a person's point of view. So it could be considered a de-merit. A good example would be your perspective that the video is a merit good.

    With De Merit goods, the MSB = MPB and the MSC should be higher than the MPC, so is your drawing on the right, wrong?
    Positive external effect involves MSB > MPB whilst Negative external effect involves MSC > MPC in my understanding.

    • @hayaspalace
      @hayaspalace หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not incorrect as it is a negative externality of consumption, rather than production. The private benefit (MPB) from consuming cigarettes is greater than the social benefit (MSB), hence why it is a demerit good.

    Hi EconPlusDal, love your videos but I would like to know if you can please make video on the new Edexcel Economics A Level papers, because they have a new exam layout/specification than prior. Thanks so much for all your videos

    Hi Dal, got A-level microeconomics tomorrow and have a couple of questions:
    How do you fix underconsumption (move MPB to MSB)? Can this be done with subsidies and universal free provision or would that change the MSC MPC curve?
    Also, do you have to write that MPB=D MPC=S?
    Thanks!

      Oh no, they come under the economic concept known as “brain failure”: when somebody has the information available to them but they are simply too stupid to use it. This links to the Biology topic natural selection for any Biology students out there.

    Thanks- though as a final sentence in an essay I'd write there is no such thing as merit and de-merit goods, all very much a normative area, plagued by government functionaries and political agends.

    My teacher draws externality curves intersecting (not parallel), is this important?

    • @nazberg445
      @nazberg445 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Yes, your teacher is demonstrating information failure to you by teaching you the wrong material, generating huge negative externalities from the consumption of it.
