In short, he’s a man who was born into a life of crime from both sides of his family, was convinced to become the longest-running mafia informant in the history of the FBI when it was revealed that “wiseguys” killed his father, and now he’s on the run from people in both camps who want him dead or behind bars. This is the best interview on the subject that I've seen in more than a year. I found Joe's story about hoping to be a postman very enjoyable. Being "connected" is something I'm sure people assume must be by choice or free will when in reality it's something that finds you, you don't find it. I think people are too cold sometimes. Typical was the story of some kid, going off to college, full of hopes and dreams, "the life" successfully avoided for more than 18 years, only to be sent back, having been misunderstood by those who had themselves boasted of their own righteousness, to the seeming inevitability of the godfather and the pledge. How could it happen? When nightmares come true you can count on it not being your fault even though they tell you it is!

    This guys fathers murder is detailed in the Chins book. Probably one of the craziest mafia hits I’ve ever heard of. The Chin feared that his dad was gonna flip and turn to the FBI so he sent a Genovese hit team of 4 guys down to Honduras and they stabbed him to death while he was sleeping. Brutal. Just the fact that the Chin went to those lengths is insane to think about. Honduras. It’s not like he was hiding out in Bensonhurst Brooklyn somewhere. Anyways- the FBI said Barrone was one of the most important informants in taking down Gigante.

    Hey Joe, if you ever read this, contact the medical examiner’s office and request a copy of the autopsy report for your father. You should also be able to get a copy of the incident report from the police department that investigated your father’s murder. That should include detailed information as to the crime scene in which your father was found. That might help you find out more about what actually happened. You should just need his name and maybe the year it happened. It may cost 10-20 bucks. But get it, if you can, and read it. See what the police actually thought happened to your father, and read what the medical examiner found.
    Unfortunately I had to do this myself for my own son, as he died 3 years ago from an accidental fentanyl overdose.
    I found more information, completely on my own, using social media, phone records, etc, to try and track down who murdered my son. I forwarded what I found to the detective. Ultimately, they did make some arrests but none directly tied to my son. It’s a low priority case and the cops are swamped as it is. I’ve come to terms with it, and now, I simply pray that the individual who sold it to him turns his/her life around.
    None of this is to toot my own horn. It’s to highlight the very low priority and, naturally, low effort, put on cases for “drug users” and “gangsters.” I hope you find some answers and most importantly, peace. I pray for the repose of your father and mother’s soul. If you need any help, let me know. Take care.

    We all are a product of our environment. This guy seems legit and honest and even has a sense of humor. I never ever put the blame on these types of individuals. We don't have any control of which family we are born into and country. Yes it's up to us as individuals to create our own fate but we must understand these types of individuals. We really can't change anybody, all we can do is understand others situation. That is why I always give everybody a fair chance. Having that bullying type mentality of judging somebody from what we have heard is very very damaging in society. Bravo to this gentleman for standing up for his rights. This man's father is a Gemini so was my father , but this man seems like a life path 6 . a home body in his natural state. He wanted to be a brave working man , this proves that he ain't a bad guy but we all are a product of our environment....this interviewer needs to show more interest in the guest. He seems like he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. If it wasn't for these types of guys he wouldn't have a show. To see the same guys over and over gets boring. He should show more excitement.

My dad used to deliver groceries to one of the higher ups in Garden City, Michigan in the early 60's. Still a lot of bars close to the river that have "escape hatchs" or lift up doors in the floor to hide people or liquor back in prohibition. Psycho/Sociopaths are almost ALWAYS charming, charismatic, and very likable, and they're also very aware of their effect on people and how easily they can manipulate them and/or prey on them basically. There are some other "Ex-Mobsters" being interviewed by various TH-camrs, and they go into absolutely gruesome detail about all of the senseless violence they've inflicted on others, often civilian types who stumbled into the wrong people.... but as you're watching the interviews, and you hear them openly discussing how they use their charm and charisma to get people to trust them, simply so they could eventually steal everything they own, followed by extorting them for even more, but you find yourself liking the guy, practically want him over for Christmas dinner. THAT'S why these types are so frightening and effective, people don't see them coming, and by the time they figure it out, they're either completely broke or dead, often dead, as the dead hold onto their secrets. Anyway, NONE of these guys are the type of person you want ANYWHERE NEAR your family, or just your life in general. It doesn't matter if they aren't up to their old ways anymore, no leopard can change its spots....

I know sometimes they may be trying to get out of there because of witnesses etc., but many of the ones I’ve read about, they were right over the guy, and all it would have taken was 1-2 seconds to make sure! And that could make all the difference between a living witness who could identify them, or getting away with it!

    Donnie Brasco,Joe Pistone,was a actual FBI Agent not a informant. Also the scene he was talking about Lefty leaving all his stuff before going to a sit down knowing that he was most likely not going to come back. That didn’t happen to Lefty,that was Sonny Black that did that in real life. Sonny knew that he was going to get whacked because of the whole Donnie Brasco incident.

      An old friend perhaps? I grew up around a bunch of heavyweight gangsters, whiteboys & sureños and, i actually found them to be pretty stand up guys who generally spent their time try to convince all the younger guys to stay sober & not go to prison..... they were diligent & disciplined and always took work legal or not.
      Mostly they were just people who didn't take shit from anyone and had a natural gift & inclination for violence.... if people were cool they were cool,

  • @shannonross2620
    @shannonross2620 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    My takeaway from this is that anyone can turn their life around. Barone was born into a horrible life (the mob). He believed his choices were limited due to his father's strong desire to bring him into the fold. After his father's murder he risked his own life just to find out who killed his dad. He didn't do it for money. He did it with no benefit, no personal gain for himself, but the promise from the FBI to learn who killed his father. In spite of the dirty dealings, and betrayal of the FBI, Barone saved lives, gave families of murder victims closure, and prevented countless other crimes, violence and potentially murders against others. Rather than finding out who murdered his father as the FBI promised, the feds exposed his nearly 2 decades of assistance, putting his life at risk and still never told him who murdered his father. Yet Barone, in spite of his birthright and past still seems to persevere. If he can change the trajectoryof his life at all costs, the average Joe can do it without all Barone's risks and perils. As always, Jordan is a great interviewer. He deftly drew out so many intriguing, gritty, compelling and even humorous aspects of this subject. Great podcast!

      Anyone can turn their life around? Do you think after Jeffrey Dahmer drugged, killed, performed necrophilia on 17 men and boy’s then had them for dinner alongside a Jello pudding for dessert he was capable of changing his life around had he still been alive?
      Your theory that people can change only goes so far lol. My idiot “nephew” is another example of that. He’s been going from 1 misdeed to the next and going for a record of how many arrest’s he can rack up in a short span of time. He apparently hasn’t learned anything and exemplifies an individual that may also be undiagnosed narcissistic. I’d say a person is a narcissist when they repeatedly do dumb shit with NO care about who pays for it, who has to bond him out (personally I’d let him rot so it would allow him plenty of time to rethink his life decisions) or, better yet.. has Covid right now but continues to go out fraternizing with individuals he THINKS are his “friends “.
      My point being is there’s hope and change in people that genuinely desire for both. My ex girlfriend is another prime example but as plenty of people have said to me “they have to want the help before they can be helped”.

A lot of them may be changed guys now, but back then you did not want to cross any of them or even have a remote connection on any level with any of them, unless you were about that life.. Nice guys?? They would smile in your face and kill you in the next minute.. so don't be fooled.. that tactic came with territory... It was all about money all the time 24/7..
