    Another excellent video! Thanks, Emma!!! I'm going to pass this on to our students at the Angel Academy of Art, Florence. We specialise in oil painting, but almost all of what you say applies to oils as well.

      Thanks for the comment! I have a whole series on colour theory based on what I've learned from pastel. But oils and pastel are so similar. I'd love to have studied in Florence! th-cam.com/play/PLbkshqfGlew_doqyQRS0ullUTyShisFjj.html

    Hi, I signed up for your Patreon level 3, it always brings me back here to TH-cam though and I was wondering then what I paid for because I can't see any tutorial videos that I'm interested in,

    Thank you I have watched your videos on color theory and it’s great now I have an idea on how to start I have just been starting with pastels

    Hi, thank you so much for your explanations. I don't undertand why you need to take a new layer in the software each time you pick up a colour... Why is it important? Thank you so much again and big hi from accross Europe!

    This is an excellent video. Thank you very much Emma. I really liked the way you used photoshop to pick out specific colours. I have used the free open source gimp software for many years , mainly for photography, so I will definitely be using it to help with choosing colour palettes in future. One suggestion I have is to use the foreground select tool to pick out and isolate your subject, then adjust the background colour in whichever editing software you are using. There are some excellent TH-cam videos on how to do this. That way you can pick additional colours for your palette that were not in the original source photo.

    Thank you for another informal video. I've notice that when I put the pastel on the paper, that's when I start to notice more colors in the reference. And so I begin choosing different pastels then what was originally planned.

      That also happens me and that's fine. I still like to analyse at the start and give myself something to get going with. I find less and less I need to stop and choose more colours.

    Excellent, organized, and to-the-point presentation. I scrambled around trying to keep up with you on the lioness live masterclass. Now I can go back and make more sense of the color selections. Thanks, as always.

    Thank you so much, Emma - another really helpful video! 🙏 I just love the colours in this painting - and to learn how to use them was magical! ❤️ It was a pure joy to take part of your master class, and I will paint this gorgeous lioness many times! 🐾🎨

    Brilliant ! Thank you ! Only issue I have is colors on my computer screen are different than real life. So a "red" on screen might look like a completely different tone of red on the paper, and so on. So putting a pastel color up next to the screen, doesn't match at all when I put that color of pastel onto the paper.

      It's true that certain computer screens will greatly change the look of colours. I work with a MacBook who are known for the good quality screens for this reason.

    Hullo Emma, thank you for sharing your techniques with us! I have seen the more accomplished artists here on TH-cam spend more time with color studies and preparation than I ever have! I think that I was always under pressure from clients to get it done and NOW! I very seldom took time for a study and to spend time just deciding on a cohesive color palette just was not part of my working plan or process! I am just very grateful for your videos and positive attitude about painting with pastels! Thank you. I hope your paintings for the charity bring in the much needed funds to help these animals survive, once again you have given a static still picture that breath of life! I am looking forward to seeing your next video! Til then please take care, be safe and enjoy your next project!

    Pastel is no different, great comment, except that with Unison (fantastic pastels) you can't choose your palette

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean by not being able to choose a palette? And yes I do love the Unisons!

    • @paulallan3564
      @paulallan3564 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EmmaColbertArt , unison keep their pigments secret, so one can't choose by pigments. I do not like buying pastels without knowing what pigment you are buying, for many reasons like archivalness, toxicity, stainability as an underpainting etc.
