    As a former KB manager, I can safely and assuredly tell you it wasn’t the Manimals line that led to the downfall. I didn’t hit my quota of Rayovac batteries on a Tuesday in 2006.

      Ome thing that bugged me about Kay Bee is the big pile of rubber snakes right at the checkout counter. Being ophidiophobic, it was very difficult for me to apprach the counter to buy anything. Knowing they couldn't hurt me didn't help. It's a phobia.

      The best things I found in the demise of Kay-Bee were the build-a-figure Universal Monsters, McFarlane Metallica figures, and the beginning of the G.I. Joe 2-packs of 25th Anniversary collection. In the very last days there were almost nothing left but metal (toy?) handcuffs.

    I certainly know of the Manimals. I'd seen pictures of the originals, but never imagined that I'd own any of them as they were released in very small numbers just as the line was cancelled and during the late 90's they commanded a hefty price on the secondary market. It was the high secondary market prices that no doubt convinced both Hasbro and KB Toys to release them as exclusives. Believing the high prices spoke of their desirability rather then simply their scarcity. Still, I bought the three that were released by KB, and frankly, I loved them! They were monster figures for your GI Joes to fight, far better then the Mega Marines monsters that one dinosaur. Didn't like them being aliens? So ignore it! Use them as genetically engineered Cobra creatures or as additionally members of Cobra-La, they were awesome IMHO.

    @AaronLitz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ahhh... no wonder I'd never heard of these things before; I was graduating from high school in '94 and had stopped paying attention to GI JOE figures around '90. I remember the last batch of GI JOE stuff I ever bought were figures like Night Vipers, Range Vipers with the skull helmets, HEAT Vipers, Metal Head, and a bunch of members of Destro's Iron Grenadiers group. I absolutely loved the Iron Grenadiers as a group, and especially the base IG trooper figures; so rad- all in black with a red mask, red half-cape, and even a sword on their hip! And the Annihilators with their crazy helicopter backpacks. And the IG vehicles were just as great, like the A.G.P., Destro's mini-jet thing that mounted onto the D.E.M.O.N. tank, and Destro's cousin whats's-his-name being the driver for something. It seemed like GI JOE was going all crazy sci-fi at that point and I loved it... well, more sci-fi than it always had been, anyway.
    Then we moved that year and I just lost track of everything and I guess that just sucked the wind out of it all for me. Too bad, too; I had been loving all the crazy stuff they'd been putting out ever since the Alley Viper with its dazzle camouflage.
    Ironically, as even I was losing touch with the figures I was getting really into the GI JOE comics, and I was realizing that not only were the comics a whole lot better, but Scarlett was actually hooked up with Snake Eyes in the comics, unlike the vague hints of a relationship between her and Duke in the cartoon. And most important of all I realized that Snake Eyes was THE coolest badass in GI JOE, even though they barely even used him at all in the cartoon. That may seem absurdly self-evident today, but to a kind who was only just starting to read the comics and had only ever known the story from the cartoons back in the '80s it was kind of mind blowing.
    I think the first issue I ever read was actually the silent issue that followed Snake Eyes as he broke into a high-security hospital to see Scarlett, who had been shot (By the Baroness I think? Maybe? I can't really remember.) At the end of the issue he finally found her in a coma hooked up to medical devices keeping her alive, and as he crumpled to the floor beside her bed the only dialogue in the whole issue was Snake Eyes forcing out a broken whisper of her name through the wreckage of his mangled vocal cords. It was the perfect issue to get a 13/14 year-old me drawn in and hooked.

MLP on the other hand is troubling in the sense that they have the option of going with the human kids of the spin-off or just going full on horse so who kmows what might happen. Hopefully they'll stay true to the spirit of all franchises and wotking everything out so it runs smoothly.

    Wow, this is even incredibly weirder than when Hasbro reinvented GI Joe as Super Joe in the late 70s.

    Vortex, Spasma, Iguanus, Predacon... are murderous aliens just big Transformers fans?

    ‘Spasma’? ‘Predacon’? So Hasbro were plundering their Transformers back catalogue for character names? No, ta.

    Ninja Force/Eco Warriors/the Dreadnoks & Cobra La/DEF all undermined the ARAH line, and Manimals just made it Worst.

    I guarantee, any Joe on the team would shit himself in screaming maniacal fear, if Spasma came running at him. XD

  • @Grimlocke95

    So they named one of them after a subspecies of Decepticons. This must have been when G.I. Joe and Transformers were running out of ideas for names.

    • @NovaSaber
      @NovaSaber 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iguanus and Spasma were Transformers names too.
      Hasbro actually reuses names between different names a lot. (For example Air Raid, Airwave, Barricade, Bulletproof, Checkpoint, Hardtop, Inferno, Longarm, Mainframe, Mirage, and Roadblock are all names shared between three specific lines; Transformers, G.I. Joe, and C.O.P.S.)
