See you out there...
I have a disagreement with a comment you made in your video. You indicated that you are not a filmmaker, or hope to be one. Well I watched your entire series from Ellesmere Island chasing the White Wolf. If that production of yours doesn't count as a documentary film then nothing does. I have spent the better part of 20-years producing outdoor related stories which have aired on TV networks here in Canada your work certainly meets and I would say exceeds what would be acceptable for main-stream media outlets. I wish nothing but continued success in your outdoor adventures, I for one will be looking forward to your next documentary film. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.
😊😊 I'm really proud to get such a fantastic compliment. Thank you so much. It is very encouraging to hear and I hope to make more of these kind of videos in the future 👍
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Very well said i agree 😀
@@MortenHilmer I agree ur a great, wildlife photographer and videographer I enjoy watching ur video everytime and there so inspireing,
I completely agree. The Ellesmere Island films were absolutely engrossing and extremely well put together; they definitely hold their own with any wildlife documentaries on TV.
Let's Go Outdoors I just want to second this brilliant description of your work. Everyone of your videos are presented in such an engaging and informative way and the quality of production, camera positions and commentary suggest you are followed by a production team in the woods. You need to be placed on tv all over the world. I’m in the uk, love wildlife and photography and your films are just beautiful. Thank you for all the hours of thought, effort and soul you put into them.
Hi everyone 😊😊 I'm about to make a video about the backpack I'm using now and comparing it to the lowepro 650. Please let me know if there is anything you want me to include in that video👍
Take care and See you out there..
Weight , confort, price .... weather sealed , space.... tripod holder... im currently needing one because i upgraded to a heavy big lens (sigma 300-800) and im looking fot a bag. Thanks Morten!
Very very nice video
I think I mentioned something previously, it would be great to see you design your own backpack.
I’m sure it would be a great hit, having your experience, in the development.
Hi Morten ....admirer of your work.waiting for next wildlife/landscape photography vlog...missing it badly..please make it happen..just shoot anything.........
@@martinbrimble5878 hopefully I can do that one day - I would love to make such a thing
at 16:42 ...... "oh, sorry, small flowers". Little things like that are what make Morten such a lovable classic!
Morten, I would just like to express how much of a fan I have become of yours. Isolation during this current pandemic has been tough but since being introduced to your videos from my father, I have been not only inspired and motivated, but also entertained. I have now watched every single one of your videos since finding you exactly 1 week ago, and having watched sometimes up to 8-9 hours worth in 1 day. Just want to thank you for your talent and humble self for making this time much easier for me, and I’m sure many others too. Keep up the incredible work.
Thank you so much. I am really really happy to hear this and I am so grateful that you take your time to writing. Looking forward to sharing more adventures with you
Morten Hilmer de verdad lo admiro demasiado 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Only you can carry a 35kg backpack just to keep in shape. Military discipline. I couldn't carry the half of it even when I was your age. You do the things that I wish I could do, even better. Thank you Morten!
35 Kilograms?! I guess the soldier is still inside you Morten😉
i mean hes still shooting things in the forest so that makes sense haha
'I am not a filmmaker' Morten, if there is someone that is a filmmaker that is you. Your work is absolutely incredible. That Ellesmere island series is fantastic! You are a whole NatGeo team by yourself. The way you tell stories, work with b-roll is very very good. You are a wonderful person!
The Title of this video should be "What's not in my Camera backpack?"
"Its only 25 kilo's, nice to walk around with"...that's almost 1/3 my body weight! Lol
1/2 of mine 😅
The “training” makes sense, it’s a good conditioning before you do carry a crazy heavy backpack out in the field. Cheers
I love how other photographers are showing what's in their medium sized camera bag, and then there's this showing off a full on backpack full of camera gear. Lots of weight. Mad respect
hiking with a 35kg bag, Morten is a wonderful photographer and an unbelievably strong guy!
Thats probably the best advice for nature photography - training- it sounds obvious once you say it but i think a lot of us have never even think about it. Great videos! I really enjoy them, congratz and hello from Bolivia!
It's really nice to see a traditional photographer try something new like making youtube videos. It is really inspiring. Also I think you are really keeping things real, not exaggerating or purposefully being dramatic, yet producing epic content. Big fan of the channel.
MAN are you a mind reader or what. 7 or 10 days ago I subscribed You. I liked your way of wild life photography. Last night i was going through your recent uploads, To see what equipment you use. May be many requested. And you listened. Thank you so much to You and your Followers as well.
Morten, my trend is the opposite, I am increasingly trying to carry fewer things on my excursions, because that's how I think I'll be faster when the occasion comes. Your video has really made me stop and reflect. Your work is fantastic and very inspiring. Thank you very much from Spain.
I suppose you are still putting your equipment back in the pack as I write this. LOL. But, It is real discipline and training and I get that. Not that I'm that tough.
Nice one Morten. Often I find when leading tours people aren't used to the weight of their bags on hikes and it certainly is an important part of wildlife photography, to be comfortable with your gear when lugging it around. Nothing knocks creativity down like feeling totally exhausted! In regard to the macro, might be worth waiting for the Z mount 60mm or 105mm S, but the 105mm Nikon VR is very good indeed! Cheers, Tom
Thanks Tom for the great suggestions. Yeah you might have a point. I have no idea about when it is coming though. Yes that is the whole point in carrying this pack - training. I could not agree more - all my good intentions and creative ideas tend to disappear as I'm getting exhausted 😉
Take care Tom and see you out there one day👍
@@MortenHilmer right back at you Morten, we will have top go on a shoot sometime when this current situation all blows over!
Sounds great
Hey Morten! I'm sure you've considered something like this already, or mentioned in a previous video but I'm a fairly new subscriber so I might've missed it, but as someone who does a lot of camping I'd say a sleeping bag compression sack would be really useful in shrinking your winter bag down to condense the size of your backpack. I've got a Marmot winter sleeping bag that's around the same size as yours but it has a compression sack that makes it about the size of a football. Someone else may have mentioned this in a comment below or in person, and you might have a reason for not using one, but I've always found them to be really helpful and you mentioned being excited about using your smaller spring bag so I thought I'd mention it!
Thank you Morten. I now carry a fairly comprehensive kit in my photography backpack for that reason. It really has helped. Now when I go on a longer walk I am not so tired. Most grateful.
I hit like before watching. That much trust I have on you Morten.✌️✌️
Went backpacking for the first time last year. Always a hiker and a camper but never put them together. Then I decided Camper meets photographer on a hike. "how will I get my camera gear involved?" Everyone thought I was crazy. Because I didn't have backpacking gear I had the opportunity to gear up light. This year's trip was postponed/cancelled because of the madness. I do think lots of practice hikes were important and going out showed me what I truly would use.
Your backpack seemed almost bottomless as you kept pulling stuff out of there 😂 You are also the only person I know who has an axe in their photobag 😉 I already struggle with what you call a "small photobag", which only has a Tamron 150-600 and a macro lens (and camera). But then again I'm not a tall Danish man 😅 Great video as always 👍
finally. we can see some good stuff in this lockdown. thanks for the video and for inspiring us.
You're always good and natural as the ambient you relate to. Keep on that way! 🇦🇷
I agree with you Morten, long term training is very important for a great photographer like you.
I discovered your channel a few days ago, by chance. And after watching several of your videos, I get much closer to defining exactly what I want in photography. I love how you make your photos and videos, you're really inspiring me. Thanks for everything. I hope that after this quarantine I can continue with this life of photography. Greetings from Colombia, Morten.
It's good to see a new video of yours in these boring times
thanks morten
Awesome, always enjoy watching crisp clean video.
thanks for the share, good information on your gear and reasons
The physical conditioning of carrying your heavier wait around was a great tip!
Hi Morten. I have the Fstop Shinn. The big one. My bag is around 14-15kg. When I've been to Vanuatu I was carrying like 20-25kg because of extra water and some extra gear of mine and from my wife. Then when I went back to the 14-15kg it felt soooooo light. I agree 100% with you for getting stronger when carrying some weight around for "nothing". (Fitting a mavic2pro combo + nikond750 Tamron 150-600 sigma 24-105 samyang 14mm and sigma 85mm + tripod. Plus extra gear like Camo clothes and batteries, water and stuff).
@ 16:45 then you know you have a true nature photografer in front of you, "sorry small flowers" 🙂🙂
For the replacement of your macro lens ; heard a lot of good things about the latest Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD (what a name!).
Sounds very good and Tamron have a lot of experience with macro lenses 👍
(great video thought, find your work very inspiring as a “wanna be” nature photographer 😊)
Thank you for your nice compliment and your suggestion. I have been looking at that one but can't figure out when it will be compatible with the z6
@@MortenHilmer I use the Tamron 90mm SP f/2.8 (Model F017) on my D500 and it's fantastic. Ridiculously sharp, even wide open. The Tamron website (which was recently updated) says it will be getting a firmware update to make it compatible but doesn't say when: www.tamron.eu/uk/service/compatibility-nikon-z-and-canon-eos-r/
Glad you are enjoying yourself Morten. Stay safe out there, looking forward to the next vlog.
This is what makes you stand out as an exceptional film maker and photographer. The back ground planning and concerns in probably most of our minds you address and provide fantastic advice.
This couldn't have come at a better time for me as I was getting concerned on how I could manage my kit for a mountain wildlife trip. Looks like I will be overloading my bag form now on to get in training. could you cover I you next bag video the start adjustments for wearing such a heavy pack. Should be worn high , low and what strap should be pulled tight to get maximum comfort.
This would be truly helpful. I was panicking at around 15-18kg, 35KG the previous comment was correct in that the soldier is still in you.
Keep up the fantastic work
You are an incredible film maker, I have watched a lot of your videos/film/vlogs. You do such great work of telling stories. You inspire me so much!
Great stuff as always! I like that you carry your full kit on all outings. If I lived someplace like you do, I would definitely do the same, because there could be those days when you go out for just a day trip, but decide you want to stay longer, you are prepared and don't have to worry about things! And you sir, are definitely a film maker. Some of the best content out there by far! Cheers my Friend!
Its always funny to see your Face when you talk about Coffee. You must love it :-))
My favorite portion in this video is 6:20-6:25... Im seeing me through you.. I too love coffee.. and of course photography... enjoy and enjoyed..
whoa you must be really good at tidying all of those gears inside the bag
Thank you! I just found your video and it reinforced lessons I'm learning as I pursue my outdoor photography. Whether I'm out in the woods or shooting underwater images, I always seem to have more, heavier packs and gear loads than everybody else. It's nice to see that you pack your gear in a similar way. It also affirms for me that if you have a passion for outdoor photography, you need to 'train' to be at your best. Thanks again!
I like your idea of conditioning with heavy bag its really very important!! Thanks for reminding me again :)
Finally video has come love u man and keep it up fir ur videos
Excelente video broo
OMG! The bottomless backpack....lol! Amazing how much equipment you carry around with you. I see your point though about carrying it around to build strength. I always enjoy your videos, very fascinating. Keep drinking that coffee!
Gosh Morten!. I do sometimes complain about carrying to much gear when I'm out in the field, but from now on and after seeing your backpack, I will hop and sing in the forest like one of snow white dwarfs. Keep well my friend!!
You are one of the best film makers on youtube.
From where do you get your drinking water from on 3 days bushcraft trips, where you can't melt snow? Do you have to bring all the water you're going to need along?
Happy days, another Morten video. My evening is now complete. 👍
Morten your videos have inspired me to start my own journey into Wildlife Photography and Videography. Today, I posted my 4th video and I have to honestly say Thank You for your quality work.
Morten its great to see you agaoin i have waited the whole weak waiting for you and i just got my very first camera Canon 550D and a 18-55 lens . THIS IS MY FIRST STEP TO BECOMING A PHOTOGRAPHER SO THAT I CAN JOIN U IN THE WOODS IN FUTURE.
Your videos are so satisfying to watch .
Yor vids really inspires me do nature photography.
Excellent video. Even though I shoot primarily with a video camcorder (Canon XF-705) I am always learning something from your great "Behind the Scenes" videos. I like the way you pack it all in. Several years ago I started to compile a list of every piece of video/camera equipment I own, including cables, batteries, chargers, power adapters, flashlights, audio equipment, you name it. So now, whenever I go on a trip I take out my list and go through it as I pack my bag according to my needs for that trip. Do you ever use such a list? Bob
And I thought my usual backpack is too heavy (~19 kg) for a multiday backpacking trip. Time to do some exercises while in the lockdown... Thanks for the motivation! :)
Cool coffee cup 😀
I'm very much looking forward to the bag video! Also, I'm intrigued by the thought of carrying the heavy bag as a kind of training. That's probably what I need the most in my bag: training.
Great stuff Morten, quite a bit of kit there:-) Nice to have the just in case accessories, glad I don’t have to carry that all the time! Although I have a few of those extra bits that I’ve used on longer more remote trips. All the best and thanks:-) 😁👍
Wonderful video Morten. One thing I expected to see was some sort of first aide kit. Perhaps I missed that. I liked the idea of always carrying the heavy pack. Makes a lot of sense. Look forward to your next videos.🙂🙂
I love the idea of using the full backpack for training in your everyday life. I might steal this idea ;-)
Wow, and I thought I carried a heavy photography pack!
In regard to macro lenses - I'm using the Laowa 100mm 2:1 macro lens with my Z6 right now. It's a great lens, but is completely manual with no autofocus or image stabilization.
I'll have a look. Thanks a lot 👍
Thank you for the very interesting video!!! Please can you tell me where can I buy the Arca Swiss adapter for the video head?
You are the best in this job
Tienes la llave jaja
My backpack is lighter but still, I like the idea of walking several times a week to keep my back strong. Good advice! And enjoyed seeing what you carry!
Wow Morten what an inspiration! I'm looking forward to the next video about the bag!
I do exactly the same Moreten, I take my (ok only 20kg) heavy pack at least once a week for a hike so that when I need to take it I can.
did a lot backpacking and hiking/climbing in the past. trying never go over 25kg on shoulders. i think it is not only about muscle strength, in my opinion knees and back is not training well that way it should be very traumatic for bindings in the long run. but hope i am wrong. thanks for the video, it is more clear now why you are caring so many things )
You know, you’re almost carrying more weight than I did traveling on a motorcycle on the balkans for 5 weeks - I only had more weight due to tool, and spare parts. I am serious impressed.
Morten, I recently discovered your videos after following you on IG. I created a youtube account just to subscribe to your channel. I am truly inspired by your work and your passion. I watch your videos up on the second monitor while I edit photos. I go on long photo hikes here in Idaho USA. I agree most camera bags are not designed for hiking. I use a similar hiking bag (Deuter ACT lite Much less expensive) I use a heavy NIKON 200-400 f4 and only one extra camera and lense for landscape. However, like you, I pack all the other essentials on every trip long or short. (45lb or 20kg max) When friends join me on a hike they question my sanity to carry so much gear on even short trips. Hell, I question it myself sometimes. Keep up the good work my friend. Let me know if you ever want to explore Idaho. We'd be happy to house you and show you around the wilderness. Keep those videos coming. I'm still catching up on old ones. Great content. Thank you for letting us join you on your adventures.
I must say I agree with the gentleman below my comment, your film making is very good and also the story telling and I do agree references getting used to carrying a heavy back pack so you body gets used to the weight, I my self quite often carry climbing gear, summer/ winter and my camera gear.
The Sigma 70mm and 105mm are both very sharp if you're looking for something smaller and lighter than the 150mm. Have you also considered using a wide angle macro like the Laowa 15mm f/4 which allows you to shoot really close but doesn't blur out the background too much so you get an idea of the environment of your subject matter?
Great video Morten, really interesting as usual! For the small removable insert, maybe check out the Tenba BYOB range? The 10 or the 13 would probably be around the right size, I have the 10 and it's great 👍 looking forward to your next video!
That's crazy Morten 😜 I can carry my camera bag with my little finger and that's two bodies and 3 lenses ✌️😁
As always awesome... you should buy nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro g lens. Best for Nikon. Try Nikon 200mm f4 macro. It's a manual lens, little heavy, gives good distance between subject and you.
👍 Thanks for your input
Great video Morten! Like the tip of always having a bigger bag for shorter trips for training.
Quick question!
What is the wool sweater your wearing? I would love to buy/knit have one of my own :).
Nice Morten…I just found and starting to enjoy your videos…cannot believe the amount of staff that came out of your backpack! With my back I cannot carry more than half what you have…ok, the Macro lens I suggest (I have gone through two of them) is the Tamron SP 90mm 2.8, incredible lens and not expensive. I’m sure they have a Z version or adapter for it - I have the F version and have adapters for Sony E and now Fuji GFX. Cheers and be safe…
Honestly.... how could anyone give him or this vid a thumbs down?.... excellent as always with lots of effort put in for everyone’s benefit.👍👍👍👍
Fabulous as always Morten, thank you. I always look forward to hanging out in Nature with you.
Good to see that you have joined the squarespace bandwagon as well ;-). Great video!
"Nice to have it' not nice to not have it !!" I'll remember that one.🚾First thing in my camera bag Morten. Great film. Keep up the good work and stay safe.👍😀
Always enjoy hearing what you have to say, Morten! Keep it up with the great videos.
Nice video... enjoy the coffee, Morten!
Everything. The answer is everything. Look at that enormous backpack, I often can't believe how much you can carry and wonder what next you gonna pull out of that thing :D I have a bad knee and always have to consider really hard what to bring, but I am working on it.
Morten, great tip. I totally forgot about training weight. Thanks man !
Thanks for doing this video! After converting a broken golf club cart to haul my gear, I realize it was too much work! After watching your great video I repacked my Manfrotto bag to get everything I need! Can’t wait to try it out! Great work!
Hi Morten. Increasingly, I meet such opinions of nature photographers that animals can recognize a vegan . They are less afraid. Someone dressed in masking clothes is just funny to them and basically doesn't hide anything. Their perception is incredibly precise - their lives depend on it. The vegan can be dressed in green pants and an orange jacket and will be friendly. It is also my opinion :) :).
Hi Morten , I am a great follower and fan of you . And this video on what’s in my camera bag is much use full to know what are the gears you also use other than your camera and thanks for sharing.. I need your view on the Nikon Dot sight DF-M1, is it really useful for birding.
Hello Morten, thank you for showing us your current equipment. As always, it was very interesting. I'm looking forward to hear and see more about that. I can't wait to know more about your backpack and how you pack it etc.
It is always very interesting what Equipment other photographers use and how they use it. I want to learn from you 😉👍
First square space sponsored video where i value the partnership. I hope it proves beneficial for you Morten.
Morten,
I saw the axe and laughed out loud, you are the only photographer I know who always carries an axe😂😂😂😂,.
Very interesting. I think maybe I will adopt the same approach and carry more - as you say very good training. It would certainly make wild camping trips and long hikes more comfortable. I am looking forward to hearing about you’re bag and how you pack it.
Best Rgds,
Brian.
Not sure if you found a replacement bag but Peak Design has a wide range of packs, bags, and cubes.
I use a Tamron 90mm Macro f4 I believe, I have it with a nikon mount, not sure If they have a Z mount version yet. But great lens, light weight, and good quality
I dont think they do yet. I use mine with the z6 and ftz adapter and works great since I dont need the autofocus. It works but just sounds like it will fry the lens motor sonic dont use it
Thanks for the input 👍
Thanks Morten! It is a very good point, carrying all this equipment so you get used to it and train for those bigger trips. I can't believe how much you manage to pack in this bag, I don't even carry half of that and I am already complaining :)
I really like the wooden cup, is your friend making it? I always struggle with plastic ones, first because they are not good for the planet but also because they give a weird taste to my coffee.
sei un grande , non mi stufo mai di guardarti.......
Its not A Morten video without some Coffee :)
Morten I am always astonished to see your work , the explanations are always great!
Stay safe!
No first aid kit?
Yeah I should start to bring that. Totally agree. I'm using plants or resin when I cut myself but you are right
Right told
I've been so busy with work, I haven't been able to keep up with TH-cam. Making time tonight! ❤️ I've missed watching your vids.
Can you include a section about you military background? I'm interested to know!
Yes I'll do that👍
@@MortenHilmer I appreciate it! Love your work.
Take a look at Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO. AFAIK it's the only macro lens made for the Z Nikon line. It looks great and it's not expensive, the only drawback is it's not an autofocusing lens.
and i thought my backpack was a nightmare ... ty :). Morten look at ( for macro 1:1 ) the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X its also really good for portraits and some street photography.
Morten! Having watched your Svalbard and Ellesmere Island series I can say with confidence that you’re a great filmmaker! Thanks for all the amazing content you produce and I’m always looking forward to your next video :)
I used to be in the British army I know how great the military shelters are, we call them bashers,
Still got mine. I never go anywhere without my flask of coffee.
Rule no1 always be prepared for unexpected.
Keep safe my friend, nice video
