    OK, so I have the opportunity to …..yes I’ve researched my local law ground squirrels perfectly fair game for everybody no restrictions … practice on squirrel is that a good idea?

    Thanks for this. A lot of people don't know all the hard work that goes into tanning. But once you learn it's not really hard work anymore
    Its just a passion and love of a skill. I learned how to tan when I was young. My toughest obstacle was the predators dragging them off at night because of my parents tough rules. But I did finally manage 1 coon hide and 1 squirrel. It's a pleasure to watch you show things I've almost forgotten.

    So do you use pickling salt for drying the hide and when you soak it in 2 gallons of water?

    Great video, Mike. Don't you just love the gristle, on a old board back? One year, I skint, fleshed, and boarded 264 coons. Lots of work.

    As a person who enjoys making things from snakes and other reptiles ive always been kinda iffy about trying mammal hides but after seeing this its given me a bit of confidence in trying it cause mostly i just need decent leather that isn't the paper thin imitation leather

    Great video my hound finally treed his first coon after 2 years of recovery from falling out a tree because we couldn't get his actual first coon so we're gonna tan this one for him just didn't know how to so I had to look it up very educational because I only know how to tan deer and small game like squirrels very proud of my boy tho great video 👍🏼

    After I tanned my racoon with egg yolk I keep it in the shed but its always wet or greasy never dries, with the weather here being humid and snowy not sure how to dry em completly , seems like Im forgetting a step or thats just how hides feel

      done take a good degrease soap like blue wolf and wash the skin i scrap several times as well

    Great video. Followed it to a "T" and my coon came out pretty good for a first try but the tail is still really greasy. The rest of the hide is dried and stretched except for a little bit of the head and back of the neck. Do I just need to be patient or should I resalt the tail? Thanks a lot!

      scrape the tail of all the fat the head has to be really scraped thin thanks

    Hey Mike! Tom Weeks.. Bill Weeks' son here.. We're tanning a deer hide, and are wet treating it in borax right now to release the hair. My wife's had it in a non-food cooler where it's been soaking for a week now. Will the borax "melt" the skin? How long is too long?
