What i like about this game the most is the fact that there is zero RNG in fights. Everything happens is dependend on your plan. No bullshit like "MISS" an attack because RNG was not in your favour.
I liked that too but the stats aren't balanced, in fact the whole game needs to be balanced there are a lot of moves and classes that are straight up redundant.
Warning: Some light gameplay spoilers are in the vid. Notes: -I planned on this being a scored review but, even after 30 hours, I didn't feel comfortable giving it a grade. I haven't been able to get to the last (if it is the last) level, and figured I'd at least need to get there before giving Star Renegades an official, super-duper important Gaming Discourse grade. With that said, it's a really good game! -My copy of Star Renegades was provided by the publisher, Raw Fury.
Is the roguelike mechanic really that punishingly bad though? I've been waiting for this game for MONTHS and now that it's out I'm a little scared to buy it bc most of the reviews say it's too difficult and unfair... 😞 I just don't wanna spend $25 on something I'm gonna play once and drop due to frustration
@@sf8xx269 I don't know how to answer your question. Because player skill varies so much from player to player when talking about if something is too difficult or not . Like I may say to you no it isn't too difficult and then you find yourself really struggling to get anywhere at all . Or you may make it near the end in your first run and think .. man .. this game is easy . So I can't tell you if it is too hard or not . But I can say I have had several runs at it , because I have grinded it for hours now . I had some long runs and I had some short runs where I died pretty early in the game. I have not gotten to the final boss yet but judging by the victory achievement not many have . I can also say that not one time . Not a single time did I feel it was unfair . Usually I felt like maybe I made a mistake or it was my first time facing something and I didn't know what they could do so I died learning the fight . Or I felt like RNG really didn't help me out that run or whatever . At no time have I felt it was too hard or unfair . But I would be lying if I said it wasn't very challenging and each run ended differently because if multiple variables . If these are truly your kind of games I don't see why you wouldn't like it . If they aren't... well it is possible you won't stand the test of time playing it . For me it is a instant classic , a gem I plan on playing more even after several failed runs and quite a few hours spent already .
@@explodogames2774 Thanks for the breakdown!! I've been scouring the internet for more opinions of people who have actually played it (aside from reviewers). I generally am a fan of roguelikes. But I'm also historically very bad at "just get good" type games like Bloodborne and Dark Souls. I think I'll just bite the bullet and get it. I've been waiting for so long at this point, I think the best thing is to just try it myself. Worse case scenario, even if I hate it, at least I gave my money to an indie dev who can use it to make more beautiful games like this in the future (and maybe they'll add a "story mode" that's easier for the console version or something.
If you notice the negative reviews , at least the ones I have seen the reviewer is complaining it is a roguelite or complaining about design that is in fact basic roguelite mechanics . Or complaining it isn't another jrpg , wishing it was another octopath traveler or something . In my opinion they aren't reviewing the game for what it is they are criticizing it for not being something else that they wanted . In my opinion they have no business reviewing it because they aren't doing the game , the developers , or the customers looking for an honest opinion about it any justice . If someone came to me for an opinion about a football game and I just criticized it and complained about how it isn't a basketball game what am I even doing ? See what I mean ?
It's actually not complicated at all, imo Star Renegades has the perfect level of depth to its gameplay where it's just right in all areas of the game, like it's very natural feeling. This game is an instant classic. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I find that it wont do ant armor damage to the bosses after I reduce the shields. Sometimes it will and sometimes it wont, usually only 1 point if it does instead of the points it says its going to do. I dont get it.
Got hyped until you said it was “Rogue-Lite”. Ugggghhhh I hate the genre so much and I was so interested in this. I’ll pick it up when it’s on sale then. Good video bro. I subbed
I agree that roguelikes can be lame and get old QUICK...but the ones that are reaaallly good have ways that connect each run. Hades is one, and Star Renegades is another. I've been playing lots of roguelikes and these two games stand out the most...being absolute must buy titles imo Personally, Star Renegades is the best I've played to date...its the most engaging and enjoyable with the most replay value imo...and this is coming from someone who doesn't prefer to play turn based rpgs. Get this game, it's an instant classic and my game of the decade.
The game is good but the animations and screen shakes gave me headaches lol. I get they wanted to make it stylised but was too much. I literally quit because of that.
I’m The Same Way Thanks To Earthbound & Undertale, I Go Around The EShop Searching For RPGs That Remind Me Of That Feeling I Got When I Played Those Games 😂
Can you tell me why Im experiencing my heroes doing NO ARMOR DAMAGE to the planet bosses after I reduce their shields when doing crit attacks? Sometimes it will reduce armor other times it wont, usually only 1 point too when the stat of the attack clearly says it should do like 5. Like with CLEAVE for example. Half the time it wont reduce any armor other times it will onyl reduce 1 instead of 4 or 5. I breeze through the game with a good party then the 3rd Planet boss wipes his ass with me using SHIELD LASER. I break it then he just uses SHIELD LASER again anyway. WAAAAAYYYY too hard LOL I need some advise if you have any. Thanks either way.
Did you say that 2 runs took you 14 hours? Did I hear that right? If so, Lol. If that's true, this game is hardly a roguelike. That's just starting the game over.
Excellent EXCEPT for the fact that breaking enemies only puts off the same exact attack until the next round. No point really in the break system if the same attack just repeats itself (Im looking at you SHIELD LASER!!). The enemies continually target your back row while you cannot target the back row yourself unless you have a weak ability to do so. Planet bosses seem to NOT take any armor damage after their shields are reduced although the heroes crit stats clearly show that armor damage is supposed to happen just to see NO armor damage while using attacks like cleave against a planet boss. Sometimes armor will reduce, sometime it wont. Garbage mechanic in my opinion. But other than that I think its almost a good game. I had fun for a week until I realized the horrible imbalances in it. Too bad.
I started off really really liking this game until I realized how completely unbalanced it is. I am absolutely sick to my stomach from the stress this game has given me. Seriously. The 3rd Planet boss is utterly ridiculous with its repeated AoE attacks that damage your health even though you have strong shields and armor. You back row is constantly targeted while you arent allowed to do the same. But its the repeated AoE attacks that the 3rd Planet boss does that makes the game broken in my opinion. I had my Aegis and she just got eaten up by the 3rd Planet bosses attacks. Health damaged on every attack even though she had shields and armor to deplete first. So as of today I think I have to uninstall the game in order to keep me from thinking "maybe just one more try". Because the game keep making me feel hopeless and that is a horrible feeling to have when your trying to play a game for fun. I dont find the frustration of how unbalanced this game is to be fun at all. The 3rd Planet boss is SO ridiculous I cant even imagine how bad it cheats on the mother ship level. I hate when good games turn bad half way through them. Shame

that is so crucial!!! how often i was in a game and had a 95% hit miss and i did loose a character.... so damm infuriating!!

Great video! I've never even heard of Star Renegades, but now I want to play it lol.
Good review man , left me with all the questions i had answered.
Came here to learn more about this game. Found an awesome channel in the process. Gonna give that Splinter Cell video a look tomorrow. Keep it up!!
Just played 6 hours and i support that title. Also very good report on the game. You got a new sub
