At 50% he can dump it fast for 60-70% and make his money and keep it moving. He might know someone who will just give him 25-28k for the whole collection he can just hand it right off to them. It is worth 40-50k after all.

This was the perfect episode for me as I have spent the last several months beginning baseball prospecting. Ive been into football and basketball for many years, but just never gotten much into baseball. So I loved hearing Tyson's reasoning and explainations. Great episode! Ty does such a great job of educating people on why he’s offering what he’s offering and I think that’s really helped to build trust from the community. What’s hard for me to watch is that I see so often people will say “I can’t afford this or that” so they spend large amounts of money for massive amounts of low level cards. People don’t account for the added time and energy it’s going to take to try and sell high quantities. You’re going to get less return from that than just buying a few really expensive cards. It’s probably more fun buying tons of cards because you get the rush of a new purchase every time, but I just can’t imagine your odds of making a positive return are very high at all. Overall, still great. It’s was a super cool collection. It’d be fun to look through and it was cool how knowledgeable he was on each player. You can tell he’s got a different level of understanding of prospects than the average fan. I hope he can help his family and reboot for some new collecting 😀 Also congrats on hitting 25 years of teaching/ coaching. I did 8 years before I quit and changed careers. That’s a tough but rewarding job!
What everyone should truly understand is that there is no such thing as a bad deal. The Seller can offer any number. The Buyer does NOT have to accept that number. If both parties are sound and sober, and not held at gunpoint, and they both agree to a price, then that deal is good. That applies to anything where 2 people agree to something. No one got shafted if both people agree.
Ty, you will definitely need to do a "Year from now" look back video on this and how this deal pans out over the long hall. Every year it seems like you are lucky to get one, maybe two prospects that break out like the Ohtani's, Witt's and Trout's out there. And then there are the couple that make it through for the 10+ year career and put up good numbers over time, but never really breakout in the collectible market. Sometimes "the juice just isn't worth the squeeze"...

I think most people understand prospecting as all of us have done it at one time or another going back to the late 80’s. The difference in prospecting today is about the short-term flip and doesn’t really bring in new long-term collectors. When we prospected in the late 80’s/90’s, the thought was to hold those cards long-term so we all had a collectors mentality. Now the hobby is breeding the exact opposite people.
Great episode as always, Ty. I love the human factor that seems to be missing from so many other parts of life. Of course you need to a profit. It's a business. But you're also dealing with real people in real life situations. Great job.

My garage and house was built in 1930. My garage has a dirt floor. Enough said.....great for burying the bodies though. But seriously....it is great for burying the bodies. Other than that...about the only thing I keep in there is to house my car overnight and the lawnmower....couple cans of raid, rusty bush cutters....etc.
Looking like its 2020-Forward, I gotta see some Bowman Chrome/Topps Chrome Gold Refractor/Orange Refractor, Red Refractor Autos of Gunnar, Adley, Witt, Yordan, Julio, etc. I know there are prospects in there that are still in the minors but where are the key cards?
#2. Really dislike unlicensed products. I harken back to my days opening wax in the 50s and 60s and love the actual uniforms and the logos on the cards.
I love buying bowman and prospecting. It’s the only way I even buy into breaking at all. Prospecting is fairly easy when you do your own due diligence. I’ve done pretty well
It's not risky unless you plan on putting them in a garage for 5 years. You are buying at wholesale and selling it at a profit. Prospects sell at those prices now it's up to you is you want to hold. You offered 22,500 so sure you will may money.
Right? Especially in a high moisture and heat climate that has hurricanes. Even if it’s climate controlled, the garage door isn’t and open here and there.
This is either going to be a hard lesson in prospecting or a great buy. Injuries are one thing that send me running with prospecting especially when guys are continuously getting injured at such an early age. Vice versa I just have to mention Ohtani so having your finger on the pulse of the farm system and minors is a must if your prospecting for profit. I do think the price was decent although I think tye overextended just a little bit but we shall see. I hope everything works out well, a lot of the names I heard are ones I have been excited about so fingers crossed.
Leaf isnt the only one that prints multiple 1/1's. I think 1/1's in general have lost their value. Only true ones like superfractors hold the real 1/1 value. Printing plates, topps archive signature, printed proofs....all that stuff isnt the same. Now topps transcendent makes a bunch too. Also not true value.
Was consignment not an option? I've seen you make that offer to other collectors on the channel. Little risk and he gets max value, or at least as close to it as possible without having to do it himself.
You definitely stretched yourself on this offer. I wouldn't have gone over 20k. The volume seems pretty good so that is probably why you are comfortable with the deal. either way, enjoyed the negotiation. thanks!
I’d have to go through the whole collection to be sure but I think 22,500 was a great deal for you. If there were 4,000 cards as mentioned (that’s feels light) that is $5.63 per card. I would do that deal in a heartbeat.
@@joeyterpstra4528 yea he got an insane steal I would have bought it in a heartbeat so what if it’s prospects he’s a professional he’ll easily sell it also there’s probably many cards worth over $100
One thing is for certain: the future isn't certain! I 100% sympathise with the gentleman's plight there; he has the gambler's mentality, and believes that what he's built up will largely grow in value across the board. Unfortunately, in prospecting, you're constantly playing the waiting game. That's absolutely fine, if you have the patience and/or funds to wait. If you need the funds NOW, then you're shifting that gambling burden on to the next person when you go to sell. Ty, I think your concerns are 100% valid. Personally, I thought you made a strong offer, given the risks. I would've ran from the deal. I'm sure you'll make money from it - but if you do, it'll be because of the contacts that you've built up, rather than what the market itself will necessarily pay. On a side-note... who better for you to talk to about money than 'Tyson BANKER'!? 😀 And, finally, I'd have as much interest in purchasing the 'Brailer Guerrero' card, as he has of signing it. Shocking autograph - and the lad is 18!? Another great episode! Thank you Ty, and CC team. 💯
Not to sound mean but a lot of the Dominican players barely know how to read let alone sign their own name. They grow up poor and are usually working and found by MLB developmental tryouts. They sign at 16 but not allowed to play until they are 18. Guys like Julio Rodriguez and Jasson Dominguez came up this way.
Just watched this for the 1st time. #2, would love to hear how this collection is working out for you. This would have been a better buy in January or February and start selling in March and April leading up to a new season than buying mid season, hope all is going well. Great episode.
#2 I would run away because I don't know the baseball prospecting market and your expert you called gave you the hard truth about that market. I am always confused when I hear someone say that selling on eBay takes so much time when they spend so much time reading stats, watching games and highlights, and searching for players to buy. I have an eBay store and fully understand the time it takes to list then wait for those sales to come in, but your going to get a better price as they are available to buyers 24/7 and some cards may need time to find just the right buyer to make a profit or break even. Ty does an excellent job trying to educate sellers on the hobby while he negotiates a win for them both.
Prospecting is fun and can be a cheap way to get into the hobby. I do it with football (soccer) most stuff is cheap and is fun to watch how there career goes.
This is a tricky collection to value/purchase. There’s so much potential here. Even with the leaf/panini. But buyers have to pay for what things are worth today not what they could be worth in the future. This is the perfect collection/situation for the seller to take a few cards of each player and hold. Sell the rest for a lower overall amount. They get the upfront money which is needed and have the chance to capitalize on more in the future if they players make it.
23:55 Point of clarification. "Unable to be authenticated" vs "not authentic" mean two very different things.... where one means "based on our examples, we can't say with confidence that it's authentic" vs "definitely fake".... all of course in their opinion. People have sent in cards they personally got signed that "fail" authentication.
I agree with this whole-heartedly. Took a picture that I had just had signed at the National in Chicago, back when the authenticating "craze" was just starting, and the "experts" told me the signature was fake. That's all you need to know about so-called experts. Unless you see it signed with your own eyes, it's ALWAYS a guess, and no amount of slabs or certificates are going to change that!
This seller is a pretty bright guy. I also like unlicensed products, certain ones. Notice he goes after the low number Leaf products. Those are rare, you just usually need to put them away and wait while Topps overprints everything to the max. He pays attention to the low entry point, which is the key to prospecting (and choosing the right players, of course). So for the person with a certain strategy, if the seller has the right players, he stands to potentially make really good money longer term. This stuff is so nuanced that this simple statement can’t do it justice…Great program, guys!
I would respectfully disagree. He is selling his whole collection yet he has a card on the way he bought on eBay? (as shown in the video). That was very strange as even Ty said he had a problem (in a joking but serious way).
@@chrisolivo6591 what do you disagree with? Topps is overprinting almost everything. The guy is pretty smart trying to dump those prospects . He has the right idea for approaching prospecting, but the wrong players. And the prospecting game is very nuanced, as such cannot be fleshed out in a single paragraph.
The guy admitted he spent over $50,000 on these cards and is selling them for $22,000. This is textbook example of how prospecting on this scale is a bad idea. He finally realized it would be a full time job to sell these cards. His wife probably told him to take what he could get before 90% of them are worthless in 5 years. Listen, i think prospecting is fun if you pick a few players. This guy is everything wrong with the hobby as he was in over his head. Heck he was selling his collection and still buying cards! (As Ty showed that the one eBay sale was from a few days earlier). This is not good for the hobby long-term as it breeds gamblers like these guys and not long-term collectors. This guy is in and out of the hobby in a few years and has no PC and a $25,000+ loss.
@@chrisolivo6591 I understand. You were indicating he was underwater with prospecting. I agree with that. But, my point was simply that he has the correct focus of looking for value when he buys, however, he clearly doesn’t have a way to determine the proper prospects to pick. That is the issue for most prospectors.
That guy would have been so much better off just buying a color bowman 1st of each of those guys instead of stacks of unlicensed/inception/best and insert autos. More value for his money and way easier and quicker to liquidate.
#2 - I wouldn’t touch the leaf or Panini stuff. Even the Bowman has a lot risk because of the 1000s of parallels, no one knows what’s going to be valuable long term.
I would stay far away from the purchase; as you said, there are so many unknowns with prospecting which is why some people love it, but it’s a huge risk at the same time for someone who doesn’t dabble in that area. I would take that $$ and buy something that I know I can move.
Love the video! I dabble in prospecting a little bit mostly Atlanta Braves players. I currently have multiple rainbows complete. The only one I need is a Ambioris Tavarez pearl refractor/10. If anyone has one please let me know thanks!
Leaf has some cool stuff! They hired me as an artist to make 3 cards for them last year as part of their Metallic Imaginations series. I did a Pele, Gordie Howe, and a Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson card. The first two got released but they ran into licensing issues with The Rock one I guess.
Buying is one thing.......but SELLING is another. These people dumping their collections never focus on the work involved in selling...... Reality is reality. Selling IS reality...... Your offer was EXTREMELY "healthy".......extremely...... I"m cheap...and last thing I need is MORE inventory to take up valuable space. I would have went with 18 grand tops....but that's just me. In the future, I"d stay away from these types of collections..... I"ll say it again...vintage, vintage, vintage. The PAST you already know who "won the race".....the future.....you do NOT.
Did you get lucky and find the only collector in the world with many multiples of the same player- or more likely there are tons of “Pauls” out there and when they all decide to sell- look out the market will be flooded and the prices will tank! It’s the junk prospecting era- Run! Great episode Chasing Cardboard team 👍❤️
I went deep into prospecting a few years ago and I “hit” on some guys that are no longer at the top. Good thing is I sold them at a good time. Too volatile so I decided to liquidate. I came out a little ahead, had fun with it, but I wouldn’t go back!
He definitely did his due diligence prospecting. Bassallo will be a superstar. The panini and leaf i would stay away from. I’m only buying bowman 1st. That’s the problem though he put to much money in non listened products
I would RUN far away from that collection! Just go buy a lottery ticket, your chances are better
Yes, one of the few videos where I’m saying nooooo, don’t buy
At 50% he can dump it fast for 60-70% and make his money and keep it moving. He might know someone who will just give him 25-28k for the whole collection he can just hand it right off to them. It is worth 40-50k after all.

Other than that...about the only thing I keep in there is to house my car overnight and the lawnmower....couple cans of raid, rusty bush cutters....etc.
CHASING CARDBOARD, amazing video bro
Good episode. Good lessons.
It was a tad too long. Thx Ty for all you do.
Extra points for having Ravel’s string quartet in the beginning.
I’ve done pretty well
Lesson learned, do not open hobby boxes. Just buy the cards you want for your collection.
This X 1000!
100%!!!!
This episode has already caused a surge in Blake's cards.
It's not risky unless you plan on putting them in a garage for 5 years. You are buying at wholesale and selling it at a profit. Prospects sell at those prices now it's up to you is you want to hold. You offered 22,500 so sure you will may money.
I know that scared money doesn’t make money, but I’d have very scared money in this collection.
storing in a garage is crazy to me.
Right? Especially in a high moisture and heat climate that has hurricanes. Even if it’s climate controlled, the garage door isn’t and open here and there.
I buy unlicensed products. I have a lot of prospects and hope they pan out as well.
That's a clean garage.
It would take most people YEARS to sell
This is either going to be a hard lesson in prospecting or a great buy. Injuries are one thing that send me running with prospecting especially when guys are continuously getting injured at such an early age. Vice versa I just have to mention Ohtani so having your finger on the pulse of the farm system and minors is a must if your prospecting for profit. I do think the price was decent although I think tye overextended just a little bit but we shall see. I hope everything works out well, a lot of the names I heard are ones I have been excited about so fingers crossed.
Hi Ty I’m interested in your thoughts of this recent release of topps chrome basketball
I like the look of leaf stuff. Sealed , patches and autos are sick looking . Also select products
Fair deal!
Was consignment not an option? I've seen you make that offer to other collectors on the channel. Little risk and he gets max value, or at least as close to it as possible without having to do it himself.
You definitely stretched yourself on this offer. I wouldn't have gone over 20k. The volume seems pretty good so that is probably why you are comfortable with the deal. either way, enjoyed the negotiation. thanks!
2 only because I’m not a big baseball prospect guy. But i like your logic with your offer and i hope it works out for both of you!
I could feel that arm throw in the air when dudes fence blew over in his face trying to fix it 😭😭
U can't go wrong with that price,a good deal both ways, Go Zoo!!
I’d really have to truly see the collection to know the value but for 4k cards not a bad deal
I’d have to go through the whole collection to be sure but I think 22,500 was a great deal for you. If there were 4,000 cards as mentioned (that’s feels light) that is $5.63 per card. I would do that deal in a heartbeat.
@@joeyterpstra4528 yea he got an insane steal I would have bought it in a heartbeat so what if it’s prospects he’s a professional he’ll easily sell it also there’s probably many cards worth over $100
If ANY of those prospects turn into Elly or Witt, you're paid 100× your investment. WHAT AN AMAZING BUY! 🎉 ❤ 🎉
I don’t mind the unlicensed products just depends on the set I like panini flawless baseball and have no problem buying it
One thing is for certain: the future isn't certain!
And, finally, I'd have as much interest in purchasing the 'Brailer Guerrero' card, as he has of signing it.
Great episode.
if i had money.. suree.. DO IT!!!
I think Ty did this guy a solid for sure
Basilio is going to be a stud for the orioles
This is a tricky collection to value/purchase. There’s so much potential here. Even with the leaf/panini. But buyers have to pay for what things are worth today not what they could be worth in the future.
This is the perfect collection/situation for the seller to take a few cards of each player and hold. Sell the rest for a lower overall amount. They get the upfront money which is needed and have the chance to capitalize on more in the future if they players make it.
my little runaway......a run run run run runaway(its a song, but, YES RUN)
Feel bad for the guy. But 2. Just not worth the risk. You're a good guy though for trying to help. Glad there are people like you left in the hobby.
No prospects for me. 2013. Clint Frazier. Austin Meadows. Learned my lesson. Luckily I didn't invest heavy.
👍
#2 but you’ll do fine with your resources. :)
That guy would have been so much better off just buying a color bowman 1st of each of those guys instead of stacks of unlicensed/inception/best and insert autos. More value for his money and way easier and quicker to liquidate.
I would pass on this speculative lot. As you said, there are plenty of other collections/lots/cards that are better suited for your finances.
Another great show. Ty you seem like a great guy, It was intense feeling. Still would have walked away or $15K
#2 - I wouldn’t touch the leaf or Panini stuff. Even the Bowman has a lot risk because of the 1000s of parallels, no one knows what’s going to be valuable long term.
#2 I would run away for you, because in order to sell right away. If you had time to wait and hold, this would be a good deal.
Thats what tgey said about bave ruth, hornus wagner, mickey mantle etc. As long as its a good price. No woese than opening oack after pack
Leaf is my favorite, but I'm cheap, lol
Where can I buy some of the cards you sell?
That was a beyooooooond fair offer… I got into prospecting this year and NEVER again 😭😭🤣🤣 So it’s a #2 for me
jeeps, skins, and cards. If he wasn't a Yankees fan, we would be best buds. lol
I went deep into prospecting a few years ago and I “hit” on some guys that are no longer at the top. Good thing is I sold them at a good time. Too volatile so I decided to liquidate. I came out a little ahead, had fun with it, but I wouldn’t go back!
I would run
He definitely did his due diligence prospecting. Bassallo will be a superstar. The panini and leaf i would stay away from. I’m only buying bowman 1st. That’s the problem though he put to much money in non listened products
50% of your estimated value is fine but sports cards are always a gamble. Say a little prayer for those prospects futures.
2. Run Forrest!
