    I appreciate you so much dude, I cant even begin to explain it. So many TH-camrs dont understand Connor at all as a character and because they don't understand him they say he lacks emotions and character. You are like one of the few who actually criticized the pacing and the endings of this game. That is the true issue here, I feel as if many shit on Connor because of what happens to Desmond. Connor's story isn't a happy one in the slightest, Ezio got a family in the end and his goals for the most part were accomplished. Connor's goals weren't all made a reality and he lost so many people in the process.
    He was lied to, manipulated, and misguided. This story is also risky for it shows that Washington was not a good guy at all, sure he cared his people but in terms of the Natives and Africans. We see the truth. AC3 is a misunderstood masterpiece in terms of its story and characters. Maybe someone needs to break it down for these AC3 haters. Because they simply don't understand, talk to them and you'll see what I mean.

    I greatly enjoyed AC3 at the time and revisiting it now on switch I'm still very much enjoying it. I've found a few bugs but overall it's a great game and I enjoy the story.
    I know most people scream about AC4 being the best in the series and I agree it's great but I think I would rather revisit this game under most circumstances because while the ship combat and travel is fun I do find it quite tiresome.

    I thought Desmond and Connors endings were very satisfying. However, I will say that I feel as if Connor had more story to go. I understand why they moved away from doing multiple games with the same protagonist but Connors role in it all seems as if it’s way bigger considering he would go on to build the Brotherhood in his region

    I've just finished my first playthrough ever of this game and returned to this video to watch it again. While I do agree with the flaws and the slow pace of the story and the first few sequences, I can't help but loving my experience, specially because of the Homestead missions and because of Connor over all. I find his story and motivations compelling, and he comes across as a realistic main protagonist for whom I can root for. The other aspect that I think many people gloss over is the fact that through Haytham we're able to understand and see the goals and motives behind the Templars' actions, making them believable antagonists, contrary to the black vs white spectrum I had the feeling the Ezio trilogy gave. It's a return to the philosophy of the first game which I can appreciate. Also, as a non-English native speaker, I love that Noah Watts delivered his lines the way he did, because Connor isn't speaking in his mother tongue - he's not emotionless, he's just trying to fix his speech to a new language. I loved that. Great video, as always

    I'm always surprised when I hear people say that this is one of the worst games in the series. I really don't know how any fan of the series could come to that conclusion. I thought it introduced a lot of great new features that moved the franchise forward. I loved the setting, I loved the story, I really enjoyed the gameplay, and I enjoyed the characters. There were also a lot of very fun side missions such as Captain Kidds treasure hunt and the naval combat. It's my 2nd favourite game in the franchise after AC 2. This was a nice, in-depth review. I'm surprised you haven't gained more traction! I'd like to share some of my thoughts as well, and maybe you can see where you stand on this. Upon playing through this game for the second time in, like, 7 years I wanted to say that I had some very mixed feelings about this game.
    ****The Good****
    Combat system in this game was extremely fun to play. I thought it was such a breath of fresh air, coming out of the already nice execution kill system introduced in Brotherhood and further implemented in Revelations. The change in controller prompts for counter moves threw me off a bit (having to tap circle instead of previously having to hold R1 and then square), but as soon as I was able to get it down it felt so nice to see my character dominate most fights. I thought the free running animations were also really nice.
    Despite being buggy at times, you were able to go from branch to branch to building to branch again and sometimes through the inside of homes. You could have the option of stealthily going through your missions and chase the thrill that way, or you could take advantage of the fighting system and mow down your enemies. Naval missions were also really fun to play. Just the suspense of those moments where you are at low health and managing to pull off sinking enemy vessels brings me to want more each time.
    The story was adequate enough to play through to the end just to find out what happens. I liked the American Revolution as the main backdrop for this game. The environment is BEAUTIFUL! The Day/Night cycles, the seasonal cycles, the falling snow in the winter and the humid heat of the spring/summer make for a really fresh experience, sometimes forcing you to change your strategies when dealing with enemies or having to complete a mission. The feel of everyday life in the towns, the nice rural areas where the inhabitants mind their own business and go about their day. There are some reasons why this game feels more alive, environmentally.
    ****The Bad (I mean the critically bad)****
    I REALLY REALLY wished that the idea of having to release the game before the "December 21st 2012 end of the world" deadline never came to fruition. I wished that it could have ended the "ones that came before" storyline right then and there, and then brought the focus back into Assassins vs. Templars. Some of the key components of the game felt so rushed as to be rendered incomplete because of the need to fulfill some arbitrary deadline.
    What do I mean by this? Well, for one, the character of Connor has not been vocally fleshed out. And I want to get this clear -- he is not Ezio, and he shouldn't be. He should stand alone as his own character and hold himself with conviction despite all of this tragedy that befell him. For the most part, he definitely has. I just really wished that the voice actor spent much more time honing in Connor's expressions more colorfully. Personally I wanted Connor to have more warmth in his voice when he is in his calmer states and come from a place of pain and desperation when he is agitated. I mean, he is the centerpiece of this game! You would think that Connor's character would be treated with the utmost care and respect in terms of his character, his principles, and his expressions.
    It pains me to say it because other characters in the game that he interacts with sound FANTASTIC, and so you are left with a really awkward dynamic when you come across cutscenes and will hear conversations between Conner and whomever he happened to talk to. It does take away from the emotional depth of the story. It does take away from the impact that he potentially could have left on the player.
    I was also not really compelled to take on the side missions or take advantage of the market system in this game. I felt that there was not enough incentive for me to pursue them, as it felt like it was there for the purpose of adding ambience to the environment in those times. It's fine and all, but I wished it was more integrated into the main story. Or perhaps they could have implemented much tougher enemies (maybe up there with Janissaries?) late-game and that would have provided some incentive. Otherwise all I was left with was a massive plot of land and not much to do other than snare animals and play hide-and-seek with childhood friends.
    Also, Desmond fucking dies and subsequent games have lackluster modern-day stories. Enough said.
    Overall I thought this was a game with incredibly high potential, buried underneath some tacked on elements that, ignore it as you might, could not help but make me feel obligated to tend to them. I would love to see this game revisited someday (another thing that we have to wish from Ubisoft (they will not hear our pleas for a Sands of Time trilogy reboot))

    • @PioneerBread
      @PioneerBread  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment! I would agree that Connor's voice acting wasn't as excellent as some of the other characters in the game, but I still thought it was good enough the majority of the time. I also definitely did not find the economic system to be compelling in the slightest. I enjoyed some of the side content a lot like the homestead and naval missions, but a lot of the stuff I just did because I enjoyed running around in the setting of the game. And yeah, the ending sucked.

  • @checkmate058
    @checkmate058 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Every ac game has a ideal path, best order to complete the stuff.
    Main story with Assassin contracts. do those together, then return to the homestead and play that as your epilogue.
    In this order the story is of a boy who sets off to defend his lands and village, gets mixed into a geopolitical quagmire. crawls out of the other side after loosing everything and settles down building a new village with newcomers he likes.

    Great review. Very in depth.
    I feel like AC 3 is a diamond in the rough. I had a lot of problems with it(1. free running is frustrating and 2.combat is repetitive and rather boring. I prefer a stealthy approach to killing and halfway through it, I gave up and just fought enemies out in the open. I felt like I was way more of a "warrior" than an assassin). There's absolutely no reason to upgrade weapons or do side missions and the trade system is original but useless.

    • @biofriik
      @biofriik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean... You can apply the same criticisms to AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations. It was always an issue with the older AC games where combat is so piss-easy that most people don't upgrade gear and seemingly forgo stealth entirely.

    This was a game of moments. There were moments when it was amazing. There were moments when it was so engaging. There were moments when it was the most fun I've had in the entire franchise. There were moments when it threatened to be the best in the series.But sadly, it's just that, moments.
    Behind these moments is several hours of padding, time-wasting, frustration, and rough edges. There are ridiculously ludicrous Synch challenges where the difficulty is an excuse to extend the length of the game, meaningless and pointless side objectives (See the homestead) and customization options which are dummed down from previous games and later ones. I feel like with another year or so of development this could so of development this could have been Origins levels of game changing, But even with the remaster it is unpolished, buggy and, to me the worst crime if all, just boring. I get it Connor is a tragic soul and is meant to show that the assassin lifestyle isn't jisy the glory of Altair, or the romanticisation of Ezio, its grit, its loss, its suffering etc. But that still doesn't excuse the lack of connection Connor builds with the player. I find he has no carisma and is just kind of annoying in places, intentional or not It's never a good sign if you find yourself disliking the person you rugby player it's liking the person you are playing as. Haytham though, wow, what a shining light. It really makes me wish that we got Haytham instead of Shea in Rogue.
    To be honest though, I don't think 3 is overrated, just like I also don't think it's underrated. I think it falls to the lower end of everyone's lists, and I think that is accurate enough. It has a lot of great ideas and so many aspects where i was willing to get onboard but very poor execution jusy made it so much more difficult to do so. It has a very very dull open world which fails to pull you in past the first few hours, an boring main protagonist, a story which is more based around historical events rather than the events intertwining with this story being told, and side quests which fail to engage in any meaningful way (See again the fckn homestead missions).
    Now, admittedly, a majority of my frustration with AC3, I would easily say 70% of it, came in the final few hours of my 100% completionist playthrough and by that stage I had grown very fatigued with what the game was offering. So many people who casually play through the game may find that they avoided the frustration I had experienced. I exhausted every feature, every option, every moment the game had and pretty much found every bug. So to those who played that way and disagree, that's ok too, and that's why I said I don't think it's overrated and those moments I spoke of earlier, they were real. When the game fires, oh does it fire on all cylinders, and being one if maybe 3 People that actually enjoyed their modern day story there is a very bittersweet feeling, because this game handled it excellent better than anything before or since and yet it was the last time we would get to do it. But there is too much I don't like about the game for me to even consider putting it in the top half of my rankings, everything it does has been done better either before or after. Rogue and ACIV are more refined iterations of the same mechanics with far more intriguing stories, AC1-ACR are the OGs and will always be near the top, and the way this game thought it was reinventing the wheel, well Origins actually did it.
    Is it a bad game, Hell no. It is still a solid 6.5 or 7 to me, but is it overly hated? I would also say no. I Really and truly think this game is ranked just about right for what it is. A buggy, glitchy, bloated, unpolished treasure of a game which gave me some absolutely amazing moments of bliss and some really heartfelt moments in between, but which also ultimately, failed to live up to its own hype, and is exactly how we remember it.

    I think my main issues with this story is how, while it chooses to be complex in its portrayal of America as a nation that was founded on hypocrisy with its own characters it fails to have that same complicated interrogation of actual historical figures Connor comes into contact with. Him being native necessitates this kind of perspective on history that requires some critical portrayals of people like George Washington or Ben Franklin with both having a pretty vocal history on the sub human nature each figure saw native Americans as. Hell Washington’s writing in the Declaration of Independence was the first time the term and rhetoric around natives as savages originated with and his later creation of the US’s first Indian policy written for the explicit purposes that any interaction, treaty, or policy done with the natives be done for securing as much land as possible for the country. Also having a native perspective and specifically a Mohawk perspective with references to and direct contact with the Iroquois confederacy and the talk about the creation of a nation in America with the Declaration of Independence it’s strange how little it’s talked about the influence the Iroquois confederacy had on the document that proceeded the Declaration of Independence, the articles of confederacy. It’s all very disappointing to me that they created such a great conflict for Connor and his character and all it really amounts to outside of the parental drama with Haythem is him being a catalyst for you to experience pivotal historical moments that helped build a nation with foundations of slavery upholding it and displacing and committing genocide on its previous inhabitants to secure expanding borders of it that are Connor’s people. It’s all just a little tone deaf I suppose is the best word for it given he’s being used as a vessel to tell an uncritical perspective of a history whose foundations required the genocide of his people and I just feel if they wanted to have the setting with an uncritical perspective just make Haythem the protag and avoid the Native American stuff entirely.

      Maybe if they didn't clutter the game with all the goofy present day stuff. This is the only AC I've played and it was incredibly irritating to have to play all the goofy handholding levels in the modern day just to further some lame story about aliens and magic artifacts.

    I agree to a certain degree with this review. Ac 3 isnt the worst game and it does better than some ac games. I like ac3 better than rogue, syndicate, oddessy, 1 , origins.
