The Schengen agreement is truly one of the most amazing (and sadly sometimes underappreciated) freedoms the EU gives us EU citizens. There are many freedoms, rights and privileges, but I think Schengen is sometimes taken too much for granted. Its amazing and I hope that my generation would add something similarly fantastic to the EU advantages in my lifetime.
Agreed - even if it gets suspended by some countries a bit too readily, it is astonishing that I managed to visit 10 countries and didn’t have a single passport or customs check (other than to get into the Netherlands from the UK in the first place!).
Vienna and Bratislava count as the *second*-closest pair of capitals (outside the edge case you mentioned). Brazzaville and Kinshasa, on opposite banks of the Congo river, are closer.
But nevertheless you will go on a - I think - 66 minutes trainride to get from Vienna's main station to Bratislava Central Station which is rather annoyingly long. Also there are no trains connecting Salzburg or Linz directly to Bratislava which is a shame.

After living in Luxembourg for a couple of years now with lots of journeys to Saarbrücken, I have never considered going to the city at 3 am - let alone using a vel'oh bike for some sightseeing - thanks for the inspiration

BTW ... I once took a train in Queensland, Australia from Brisbane to Cairns. The scheduled travel time was 32 hours. We reached our destination after 52 hours.
That's a lovely challenge and I've loved the other ones you did, including the bus challenges and 24h challenges. You definitely deserve more viewers to your channel, as you're much more original than other travel reviewers. And as I was hearing that TER announcement, I heard that it was bound to Krimmeri-Meinau, which is a railway station in the periphery of Strasbourg just before the German border. In any case, the former Corail coaches used on the services to Basel are named TER 200

Extremely brave of you to include a Flixbus coach on a tightly scheduled journey... Even though I had barely any reasons to complain when I used them to make it to London last year, if you read customer reviews you'd think 99% of their coaches are delayed, cancelled without notice, and/or driven by a pack of abusive, wine-soaked sociopaths. Now that I have watched the entirety of your videos (they were all lovely btw) I feel like they will have a potentially very strong influence on where I take my summer holiday to and how I take it. And coincidently that will be starting from here, in Liège! So thank you! (Or curse you, as I can't say yet if said influence will turn out to be good or bad)

19:14 SBB schedules international trains such that they replace domestic trains scheduled at the timeslot. The reason they do this is that their network is at capacity, they can't squeeze in more trains. The upside is you can take a TGV with a Swiss domestic ticket and without a reservation, and that more Swiss cities have international connections. The downside is that the Swiss railway system is very precise, and if your international train is late, domestic travellers may miss a tight connection later. So they have mostly stopped doing this with German trains since DB is too unreliable, so now most ICEs end in Basel SBB.
Once again a geniunenly lovely adventure! I would love to join you here in Prague for a coffe. Also I was anticipating you to jump of that Railjet in Salzburg to go to Villach and get to Itally and continue onwards to Slovenia, Croatia and then perhaps finish in Hungary.
Think I could have managed Slovenia in time, but not further sadly. So could probably have got a different 10 (but not the 11 theoretically manageable if I’d got to Hungary).
Unfortunately, international trains through ex-Yugoslavia aren't exactly frequent. Trains through Slovenia are mostly fine although not particularly fast, but there is a fairly long delay at the Croatian border. After that there are only two trains a day to Hungary from Zagreb, one in the morning and one in the afternoon so he wouldn't be able to make it.

Excellent video as always! While I guessed the Basel and Vienna areas would be there, it didn't occur to me that you could do the Maastricht as well. And yeah from my experience, if you're relying on tight connections then France (and Germany) are a lot more likely to put spanners in the works than the other countries here. Are you planning on a re-run?
Thank you! You’re right - France and Germany can be problematic. I deliberately avoided using any German long-distance trains on this challenge because they aren’t hugely reliable. Maybe a re-run sometime, when there’s a bit more daylight!
Having travelled Europe extensively and lived out in France and Austria, this is a very underrated and informative channel. Can't wait for the next video (already eyeing up London to Paris via bus!)
5:30 i may be a bit late but this is actually not true, despite being very thin, there is a small strip of Flanders between vise and the Netherlands, the section where the Netherlands borders directly to walonia is further east, east of Sinnich and a little bit west at the river
@@travelling_turtle if you like border weirdness or even madness I can highly advice Baarle Nassau and Baarle Hertog (same village but the Dutch and Belgian names) if you have never been there, it has become a bit touristy due to its weird borders in recent times but is mostly still a "normal" village with quite decent bus connections to both the Netherlands as well as Belgium
Great initiative ... I told a Chinese friend in China about the 24 turtle travel from London to Paris ... I always encourage her to check out the ZERO points. I dragged many of my Chinese students to the 0-point in Guangzhou. Fun fact. The coordinates on the very sophisticated ZERO point marker in Canton (Guangzhou) correspond to a toilet block ~70 m away.

Has anyone ever travelled from Eijsden to Břeclav before? Probably not. At least not on this route. Well done! I'm deeply sorry that the only German city you have seen is Saarbrücken of all cities. At least it was dark... Your commentaries about Liechtenstein are hilarious! (3 Francs for a stamp. They really know how to make money!) Up until Innsbruck I would have assumed a route via the Brenner pass, Italy, Trieste, Slovenia and to the tip of Croatia. James Joyce would have appreciated that. Again it's been a pleasure to travel with you once more.

And good questions… With a combined population of over 30,000, I guess there’s a decent chance someone from Breclav knows someone from Eijsden or vice versa, and has made the trip, but certainly not via that route! Don’t worry, I’ve seen plenty of other German cities that I like a lot, so I’m not judging the nation by half an hour in early-morning Saarbrücken… The issue with going over the Brenner is that you then really have to travel all the way down to Verona before you can start heading east again, due to the topography, and the Italian-Slovenian cross border connections are really poor (though slowly improving again). But yes, I’d have liked to have done that to reverse Joyce’s journey!

Being still during iron curtain days we used to wonder what it would be like if Europe was fully open for free independent travel, didn't really seem possible in the early 80s, How times change!

Great idea! One question stuck in my head through the whole episode though: why start at midnight? Wouldn't it have been easier on your system to start early morning after a good night's sleep, then travel through the day and finish late the next night? How did you manage to stay awake?
Thanks - the (near) midnight start wasn’t ‘deliberate’, so to speak - it was the result of a lot of trial and error and timetable wrangling to find the most efficient route and use of time. In a 24 hour public transport challenge, the tricky bit is always going to be how to use the early hours of the morning effectively - the early morning coach from Liege to Luxembourg was perfect for that, as it allowed me to tick off countries even at a time of day when most public transport is shut down. So that became the keystone of the plan, with the route and timings planned around that, hence the middle of the night start at Eijsden. As for your last question - I don’t really know - I think I am just constitutionally capable of not needing very much sleep!

The music choices help to give these challenges of yours a triumphalist air, which in my view is entirely justified. (I assume it probably also helps that for the most part they're out of copyright!)
I should add that the music also highlights the European character of this journey - it's not as though we've all been getting our kicks by easing on down Route 66, for example!

Excellent video as always! While I guessed the Basel and Vienna areas would be there, it didn't occur to me that you could do the Maastricht as well. And yeah from my experience, if you're relying on tight connections then France (and Germany) are a lot more likely to put spanners in the works than the other countries here. Are you planning on a re-run?
Thank you! You’re right - France and Germany can be problematic. I deliberately avoided using any German long-distance trains on this challenge because they aren’t hugely reliable. Maybe a re-run sometime, when there’s a bit more daylight!

5:30 i may be a bit late but this is actually not true, despite being very thin, there is a small strip of Flanders between vise and the Netherlands, the section where the Netherlands borders directly to walonia is further east, east of Sinnich and a little bit west at the river
I have subsequently discovered this and feel very silly I didn’t know about it before - it is the sort of factoid I love to know!
@@travelling_turtle if you like border weirdness or even madness I can highly advice Baarle Nassau and Baarle Hertog (same village but the Dutch and Belgian names) if you have never been there, it has become a bit touristy due to its weird borders in recent times but is mostly still a "normal" village with quite decent bus connections to both the Netherlands as well as Belgium
Great initiative ... I told a Chinese friend in China about the 24 turtle travel from London to Paris ... I always encourage her to check out the ZERO points.
I dragged many of my Chinese students to the 0-point in Guangzhou. Fun fact. The coordinates on the very sophisticated ZERO point marker in Canton (Guangzhou) correspond to a toilet block ~70 m away.

Up until Innsbruck I would have assumed a route via the Brenner pass, Italy, Trieste, Slovenia and to the tip of Croatia. James Joyce would have appreciated that.

Thank you! And good questions… With a combined population of over 30,000, I guess there’s a decent chance someone from Breclav knows someone from Eijsden or vice versa, and has made the trip, but certainly not via that route!
Don’t worry, I’ve seen plenty of other German cities that I like a lot, so I’m not judging the nation by half an hour in early-morning Saarbrücken…
The issue with going over the Brenner is that you then really have to travel all the way down to Verona before you can start heading east again, due to the topography, and the Italian-Slovenian cross border connections are really poor (though slowly improving again). But yes, I’d have liked to have done that to reverse Joyce’s journey!
Out of all the challenges you’ve done, this is definitely one of my favourites. Very fun to watch and very informative.

Great idea! One question stuck in my head through the whole episode though: why start at midnight? Wouldn't it have been easier on your system to start early morning after a good night's sleep, then travel through the day and finish late the next night? How did you manage to stay awake?
Thanks - the (near) midnight start wasn’t ‘deliberate’, so to speak - it was the result of a lot of trial and error and timetable wrangling to find the most efficient route and use of time. In a 24 hour public transport challenge, the tricky bit is always going to be how to use the early hours of the morning effectively - the early morning coach from Liege to Luxembourg was perfect for that, as it allowed me to tick off countries even at a time of day when most public transport is shut down. So that became the keystone of the plan, with the route and timings planned around that, hence the middle of the night start at Eijsden. As for your last question - I don’t really know - I think I am just constitutionally capable of not needing very much sleep!
