Thanks Rob. My strike location does suffer a bit if I move my lead hip laterally beyond my lead foot (;let alone my belt buckle), killing my rotation a bit. So I try to focus lately on pushing up from the ground harder and earlier to prevent that, checking my end position with stretched lead leg (instead of bent) and nipples pointing slightly up to the sky :-) . works quite well for me as a notorious overdrawer/hooker of the ball, it makes me rotate better. Low point doesn't suffer much I noticed on my Mevo+
Rob, you are correct, hips do move forward and i measured,it is roughly eight inches. I believe this is very important not just for power and accuracy but striking ball first then turf Everytime.
I played today and tried your tip for driving and I picked up 20 yards and I didn’t miss a fairway today, I ended up with a score of 79, this was my best round of the season so far, thanks for the great tips.
This explanation is amazing. I have been practicing this at home without a club in a door frame. The distance increase in every club has me completely dumbfounded. Typically my driver distance was 235- 240yds. It’s now 270-275yds. And the strike feels so much better. Thank you so much for posting this.
Rob- of all the lessons you've given this to me is by far the most important to me because I've been premature in my movement left rather than waiting till I get to the top and start moving to target as I start down. Such good stuff ALWAYS. Be good-Russ
Rob, great timing on this video! I actually began doing this last week (based on earlier videos of yours). The results were very surprising - irons longer and straight with purer sounding contact. For me, the secret was making a smooth unhurried transition at the top and not rushing the downswing, which gave my hips time to move forward first. So it was a double benefit for me since it forced me to have better tempo coming down from the top of my swing. I live in Metro-Detroit and cannot find a S&T instructor, so you’re my lifeline! Keep them coming and THANK YOU!!!
Not only a key to iron shots BUT absolutely vital to driver. I feel crazy lateral with driver. Like, all lateral. It's not when you watch on video but real vs feel is so true here. Rob, love your channel.
ROB, A few months ago I saw a video with Tommy Fleetwood who described his swing as rotational but the video shows him leading with his hips. Rotation happening after impact. Another great lesson that could help a lot of swing styles.
Thanks, Jim. As I mention in the video, it’s certainly a “blend” of both pieces, but the majority of golfers would do well to get the sway part in as early as possible in the downswing, then let the turn part kick in.
I used this drill today played 9 holes, shoot 36. I have always had a low point issue. This drill is a great video, it corrects so many problems, Thanks Rob
Man. You’re really helping my game. This is something I’ve figured out on my own but you confirmed it. These drills will help me make it a permanent part of my swing cause I have trouble doing it on course for some reason. At the range when I do this the balls go so much further
Had partial success with this movement though I seem to shank a few 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ I think I prefer the hit hard stop quick type of shot, feeling like I “punch” the shot. Work in progress 😂👍
Message from Joseph Ann Arbor mi thanks for a great presentation and set of drills. I know this is a missing piece in my swing. I am 82 and have started working wit your recent programs.I am thinking of sending you a video for analysis but there are complications with my teacher Will E we have been friends since 1995.i
I have been watching a video of Ben Hogan over and over, the video where he talks about initiating the downswing. As I watched I noticed he look very stacked and tilted. At the top of his backswing his weight appears over his lead leg. He initiates the down swing by moving his left knee and left hip down and toward the target. He shifts about 8 inches laterally. He may be an S&T pioneer.
I thought the idea of stack and tilt is that you don't have to time weight shift! This certainly changes things in my mind... and maybe explains why, even with stack and tilt, that I struggle with driver!
Excellent content again Rob. As part of the hip movement forward, the lead leg extends and reaches full extension with max weight forward, correct? Also, when building the grid, the hand and club path should be ~20deg inward from the target line? What is the distance between hand path and club path?
Yes, Brian, around 20 degrees is a good guide. Just place the hand path underneath the hands at set-up, so they are 6-10 inches inside the club path grid.
This is a great drill and feel. I’ve started practicing this and I have much better ball contact. The problem though for me is that I can shift my hips as recommended, struggle with my upper center catching up too quickly. I can get away with it on shorter clubs, but it’s disaster with driver. Do you have a drill or feel for keeping the upper body centered longer? Thank you.
@@robcheneygolf1 Sorry, my upper body goes too far forward, meaning not enough separation between upper and lower. I’m working on my first move to be pushing my hips towards the target but as I rotate through my upper body catches up too quickly.
@@MichaelSeverini watch this one th-cam.com/video/4ZIitBe8SdI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ntFOO6CehIMmV5QO The drill from the 8min mark (keeping the head behind the obstacle) would be a good one for you.
Hi Rob, great video. However, question: How would you describe the timing for this move on the Backswing: Is it a pause at the top, sway, swing arms down? Apologies in advance if I am asking the obvious> :))
Great video, could this be the reason why I am not hitting my driver high enough? Getting good power, just hitting the ball low at times. With Irons also
I’m assuming and hoping this will help with early extension which plagues me. I can’t help but stand up as I tilt down and away in the backswing and then the opposite happens (stand up) in the downswing. I’m hoping this drill and the ‘head on the wall’ drill will help me. Out of golf for the moment as early extension has killed my lower back. 😢
Swaying of the hips in the downswing and follow-through TOWARDS the target only, not away from the target in the backswing. So I’m not sure where you’re hearing the “weight back” you mention?
@robcheneygolf1 Maybe I misunderstood u, but if u are swaying fwd, don't u have to be back to go fwd? I like a lot of ur drills, so I will practice those to get the feel.
@@favorite3424 no need to go back to go forward. Central weight in the backswing, then moving forward in the downswing/follow-through. This video also explains the concept - Hip Turn HACK For Incredible Ball Striking! th-cam.com/video/gh_DGfEhPNo/w-d-xo.html
The sway is starting as you finish the backswing. So the sway is first, then the arms take over during the downswing. Does that help to answer your question?
Rob, you just totally confused me. In previous videos you talk about first downswing move is down and left with both shoulders and hips before pushing up and turning. This move was not in this current video. Please clarify.
Yes, I'm interested in this too, as how does this instruction fit in with the 'Crush the Can' concept of shifting weight onto the left side in the downswing.
Appreciate you taking the time to comment! That's a great question and let's me know you are paying attention... 🤓 at 2:10 in the video, I mention the "down & forward" (crush the can) movement to initiate the downswing. This video is to help those who don't KEEP moving the weight towards the target for LONG ENOUGH throughout the rest of the downswing and follow-through. Maximising the pelvic sway feeling is beneficial for those with this issue. So the stick through the belt loops should stay tilted to the left for the very first part of the downswing (crush the can) before quickly transitioning to the right tilt (hip sway). Hope that helps to clarify the message in this video some amount?

Rob, I, my instructor and Scottie Sheffler don't agree with you. Certainly there must be "unweighting" from the top of the backswing or slightly earlier and the best pros move about 4-6" towards the target at impact but essentially after unweighting, they're turning onto their lead post. The amount of sway that you are encourgaging would restrict the turn and could lead to back injuries.

So at the top of the backswing the lead knee is bent (7:11) and then it straightens about halfway down (7:16)? Both knees are straight at impact?
Sorry but that would only lead to early extension. Your lead knee should not straighten halfway down in the golf swing.
Ok, the swaying of the hips reminds me of weight back and sliding into the swing which stack and tilt teaches against.
