For example, if I had a "blog post title generator" resource (and it was ranking), bloggers could Google it and find it, use it, and then link to it in their own articles because they found it useful and want to share it with their audience. However, I agree with your point - it's not the easiest way to obtain links because it requires you create the asset in the first place, it gets found, and then gets linked to. The type of resource also depends on the niche. In your example, a hiking calculator may not make as much sense as a hiking checklist or an article on the top 50 hikes in Michigan with a downloadable PDF. It's more about creating a great resource that people really like and want to share than it is about just calculators.
