    Thanks TJR. Your observations of this Magical Beatles album is great. You gave me an expanded understanding of some of the songs and the album itself. I was 14 in 1967. There was a party, in the Bronx. All we did was play Sgt. Pepper over and over. I don't remember anyone able to speak much. I appreciate your piano/music explanation of their chords. It's .nice to hear you explain the chords and their feel. Paul said as boys they would take a bus cross town to learn a new chord from a mate. They didn't read music which opened them up to play, and even make up chords that sounded great and just fit perfectly. I look forward to more of your Beatles videos.!!

      This Bird Has Flown Its quite an elaborate joke. A fantastic amount of energy and artistry put into joke. Also were The Beatles talking to Manson? One two three four five six seven all good children go to heaven. Painted by the Manson family before or after Abbey Road came out? Always thought this question was never answered.

    Excellent analysis ! I was 17 when Sgt Pepper was released and I never forget the moment I listened to it for the first time on the radio and was writing down brief notes about what I was listening to ... Presently, I also play lead guitar and compose short pieces for the instrument. And I deeply thank The Beatles for introducing me to music when I was only 14, in the beginning of 1965. Congratulations for your excellent analysis and many thanks !

    Ringo was hesitant to sing the song because the original lyric was "would you stand up and throw tomatoes at me" and in those days people threw all sorts of things at them. He didn't want to start a new tradition.
    Also: The end vocal note (Frieeeeeends) on "E" above Middle C was high for Ringo's voice and he was concerned he couldn't sing it. Paul coached him and got the note.

    • @TJRtheOriginal
      @TJRtheOriginal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed....If I am not mistaken: Ringo mentions the tomatoes story in the hard cover book as well. Thanks for comment.

    • @jpw9012
      @jpw9012 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great! I'm a huge Beatles fan I did not know those were the original lyrics and it strikes a chord with me because in 2009 I threw tomatoes at Sarah Palin (I missed thankfully) and got into a bit of trouble for it but I'm glad the Beatles thought about doing it before me 😁

      What doesn't make sense to me about that is: if The Beatles knew they had played their last live show and were only gonna be a studio band from this point on - why would've that mattered anyway?

    In a way, many performing musicians use an altered ego on stage which is different from their "normal" state (Richard Starkey to Ringo Starr to Billy Shears). I enjoyed your analysis, I have a feeling that you had bright parents. It's a never ending treat to enjoy Beatles music.

    Also I heard Paul talking to a journalist in a taped interview,say he imagined Ringo tripping as he was going onto stage and that's what the audience was laughing at. So your bang on there. But he said that it wasn't set in stone and that it was only in his head. But that was the thing they laughed at.

    This is great! I got my copy of Sgt. Pepper's for Christmas,when I was 12, in the late 1980s. I was already many years into Beatle fandom, though I was almost exclusively aware of and a fan of the mop top stuff. I lived for the Beatles, though oddly enough I had never heard Rubber Soul or Revolver or the White Album, etc....
    I am very lucky to have had a real Sgt. Pepper mind expanse in the 1980s! But for me, the album's magic is still mysterious. I am digging your explanations and theories. You are opening up new layers of thought and also enjoyment of this record.
    BTW - a friend of mine's father is pictured on the Sgt Pepper cover. I am in a band with her son. She heard Sgt Pepper in Paul's apartment a week before it was released!

I know this is only Part 1 but based on this video you have really changed my thoughts on how I listen to the album in a good way because when I listen to Sgt.Pepper I don't usually give the songs much thought on what there actually about but now when I listen to pepper I'll know they have a meaning and that will make me realize why Sgt.Pepper is truly #1

    Enjoyed this overview. It's fascinating that the inserted laughter of the "audience" was an artistic bull's-eye, as far as your receptiveness to the album goes, TJR. Since I was never acute enough to be drawn in by that--to wonder about it--you've really added an extra point of appreciation to the album for me.

    After the first song of the album and we hear laughter, I heard Paul McCartney speak about this one time online. Ringo is making his way to the stage to get ready to sing the second song. He trips and falls making the audience laugh, gets up dusts himself off and precedes the same a Little Help from My Friends.

    The idea of doing an album about their childhood has been kicking around a couple of years. This is as close as they got. You can really see this is the 2 songs that never made it on the album. Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever. I think the final result was amazing in any case. This really was Paul McCartney's Magnum Opus. Getting Better & Fixing A Hole fly under the radar screen but are brilliant and well written songs. (I'm taking the time for a number of things, that weren't important yesterday) But as always, their best song on the album is a John song. IMHO.

    Julian's drawing is now in the possession of David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
    A lot of people think "Lucy" is all John's song, but Paul contributed a lot of lyrics including: "plasticine porters with looking glass ties" and "newspaper taxis appear on the shore".

    • @bonzodog6872
      @bonzodog6872 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ModSquad no he didn't it's John's lyric completely

    • @strathman7501
      @strathman7501 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bonzo - both you and ModSquad are correct *and* incorrect. John himself said that Paul contributed to the lyric. John specifically said that the 'newspaper taxis' part was Paul's. The interviewer mentioned the newspaper taxis, which is why John happened to say 'That was Paul', so it doesn't mean that it was Paul's only part. Paul's own account is that he contributed the 'newspaper taxis' and 'cellophane flowers' parts. This is consistent with John's account. And if you want hard evidence check the handwritten lyric sheet (repro in Hunter Davies' book) where you can see the verses written in john's hand, the newspaper taxis and cellophane flowers parts added in Paul's hand. But I know of no evidence that Paul wrote 'plasticine porters'. Is there a source for that, ModSquad?

    When you posed the question about what happens when a band is freed of touring and are without limits in the studio / having to worry about replicating the sounds live.... it reminded me of my all time favorite album "endserenading" by mineral: it's not experimental or as layered as this but the band was breaking up so they decided to add various overdubs and vocal harmonies since they wouldn't have to play live again. The result especially compared to their first more raw album was incredible. Also doesn't hurt to have genius mark trombone behind the boards. Must listen if you haven't Tim

    Although the audience disappear before Lucy. For me, the song is so in keeping with what's already gone that it denotes that the audience has settled down and are more into the performance seriously. And they only have a little comedy at the beginning and end.

    Lucy technically is not about LSD. You don't see Lucy until the end of the song, there she is at turnstile. The song is about what LSD is not, it is about what you have been told by the media what LSD is like, and it is not like that. The song is actually, to jump a political fence here for a moment, about fake news, which was an active conversation among the hippies, sometimes the hippie news would be left out of the regular news.

    Hey TJR, I really like your analysis, and particularly, the "flight of fancy" into the connections with Yellow Submarine. I guess it would take a conversation with Paul or Ringo to know that for sure, but art certainly allows for those kinds of retrospective creations. If Paul and John were thinking about that during YS, then that is reality.
    Ziggy Stardust didn't come along until five years later, proving once again that The Beatles got there first. What would pop music sound like today were it not for the Beatles? Would there have been a Led Zeppelin? What would Elton John have done?

    Great video and I generally agree with your conclusions. The new Stereo Mix is far better than the original Stereo Mix, balancing out the sound more across the channels, however it is a different mix to the Mono Mix which for me is THE definitive version of Pepper. There are noticeable changes in the new mix, some inexplicable like the omission of the dog tone - why? The new Stereo Mix is enjoyable and I will listen to the 5.1 mix again, but my go-to version will always be the original Mono, as mixed by the Beatles themselves.

    For musical artists not adopting alter egos until very recently- you have Marilyn Manson with the Antichrist Superstar character, Eminem with the Slim Shady character, My Chemical Romance with the Black Parade band, and David Bowie with the Ziggy Stardust character. There a whole ton of examples before Mariah Carey and Beyoncé.

    I have always felt that Lucy in the Sky was one of those songs that, had Lennon & McCartney spent a little more time on the writing, could have been turned into something even better. While the "drifting" verses are stunning, I think that the song is let down by the rather boorish, simplistic, chanted chorus. Yes, it does create an effective juxtaposition, but verses as beautiful, haunting and mysterious as these deserved a better crafted chorus.

    • @peterveld1385
      @peterveld1385 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps as the chorus represents the drawing of a child it ought to be simplistic ...

    No mistake the second song on the album is about the insecurity that they might not live up to being the Beatles

    As a friend of mine and I once discussed, the album is a concept in that it is psychedelicized Victoriana: the alias an ensemble like a Salvation Army band; the Lewis Carroll feel of "Lucy in the Sky"; the schoolboy mentions (in "Getting Better" and "Good Morning"); the domestic portraiture ("She's Leaving Home," "When I'm Sixty-Four," and "Lovely Rita"); the antique fairground ("Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"); the alias band's physical setting on the album cover; even "Within You Without You," as my friend observed, because we think of India's close connection with Britain as a Victorian thing. All this was heralded by "Eleanor Rigby," "Penny Lane," and "Strawberry Fields Forever." (Indeed, the actual Strawberry Field, which seems to have been built in Victorian times, was a Salvation Army children's home in the childhood period of the Beatles. According to Wikipedia, the Hunter Davies Beatle biography quotes Lennon's Aunt Mimi re the summer garden party held there each year: "As soon as we could hear the Salvation Army band starting, John would jump up and down shouting 'Mimi, come on. We're going to be late.'" Evidently, a splendid time was guaranteed for all.)

      PS At variety.com/2017/music/spotlight/with-sgt-pepper-the-beatles-celebrated-britains-lost-empire-and-found-it-a-new-role-1202443612/ is a Variety article that might interest you, TJR. It's from May 25, the day before the Sgt. Pepper 50th-anniversary release. Headlined "With 'Sgt Pepper,' the Beatles Celebrated Britain's Lost Empire, and Found It a New Role," it includes the following:
      "As [the Beatles] created their masterpiece that was on the far shores [of] anything that had been envisaged by others in terms of music, the majority of the lyrics paradoxically looked back. Not in anger - but with gentle affection for the rapidly vanishing world of their childhood and in particular of Britain’s once proud Empire. It cherished the bygone Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian eras when the sun never set on the lands that Britain colonized and the waves that Britannia ruled.
      "The songs evoked decidedly English phenomena such as colliery brass bands, eccentric circus performers, quaint railway stations; hobbies such as knitting, sitting by firesides or on sofas with sisters; lonely hearts clubs, rocking horses, messing about on rivers, sending postcards, partaking of pies - both marshmallow and fish ‘n’ finger (the latter much desired by teenage boys) - all of course washed down with lashings of hot tea. There is no New York or New Orleans in sight. Just the decaying post-industrial northern town that was old Blackburn. And the final song on the album enshrines two enduring architectural symbols of the Victorian era - the House of Lords and the Royal Albert Hall.
      "These nostalgia-imbued lyrics were more Norman Rockwell than rock ‘n’ roll. And yet simultaneously the music took us into a brand-new promised land."

    Actually, i feel like the alter ego concept is a bit older than modern pop - David Bowie, for example, famously appeared as Ziggy Stardust or The Thin White Duke. Other than that, fantastic video!

    Pepper's may have been an alter-ego for Mac and the Beatles, but it also fit well with the developing militaristic super-ego of Lennon.

    This and many other Beatles recordings were made to be heard in mono and they sound much better that way.
    Also, the invention of stage monitors and modern stage setups which seems to have come into existence the day after the Beatles broke up, would have allowed them to hear themselves.

    In regards to the part where the audience laugh and we don't know what it is that they are laughing at. I've seen an interview where Paul says although he left it for the audience to wonder what was happening, he was personally thinking Ringo does a little comedy trip as he walks to the mic.

    The purpose of the laughter is to have the listener imagine Billy Shears approaching center stage to sing his number, and he trips comically. Originally the lyric was 'What would you do if I sang out of tune, would you stand up and throw tomatoes at me?.' Ringo refused to sing that.
