Best 21 minutes of my life. as an upcoming songwriter I find your dissection of Sgt Pepper to be quite the music lesson. I legit feel like I've learned some new stuff thanks to you!

I picked up my copy of the album the first week it was released in June, 1967. I was 17 years of age and I was mesmerized....as was much of the rest of the world. Those of you not alive at the time have no idea of the power and influence this band had on music and the culture at large. Wonderful analysis, TJR.

You're dam lucky for dis overnight it like that. Unfortunately my experience discovering it was s complete 180for m the way you did. Still love the album but I'd give anything if I could turn back time and not discoverd that dam 1978 movie and soundtrack FIRST before hearing the Beatles original. This makes me sad. When I read comments like this, I feel robbed out of a wonderful experience of hearing this album for the first time without being exposed to any of the cheesy covers prieor to hearing it.

Okay - I was 12 and my best bud locked me in his brother's room to hear it over and over and over again. I tried to get out the window - BUT was Pepperized forever. It was magic. That summer we played it over an over and over again. Now the cat was out of the bag. Pop music was changed forever!

I got it at a record fair for £2 (original vinyl record) and wasn't really into the Beatles but for that money and how iconic it was I got it, eventually my college was gonna be taking us to The Beatles Story in Liverpool so the night before going I listened to the record and I loved it, so trippy but beautiful, I've been into the band since

Hi TJR just wanted to say how much I appreciate all the time you must have spent making this. I really love the way you give a breakdown of all the instruments and the chords. please don't let Google discourage you from making more videos they are wonderful and very educational especially for someone like me who loves music but is not a musician i find that there's always something new to learn from watching and they're fun too.

This was fascinating. I've listened to this album countless times but never saw what TJR sees - he's made it a whole new experience! My new stereo system will be installed on Tuesday (two days away) and I intend for Sgt Pepper's to be the first vinyl spun on my new turntable. I'll listen with new ears now thanks to the door that has been opened for me here - thanks a lot TJR.

Love your deep analysis, including personal anecdotes depicting tone. I took a deep dive in 2017 (50yrs anniversary) to reproduce the album as live and faithfully as possible. Scouring through isolated tracks and working up part perfect instrumentation was a pet project dream. Enlisting a string section, clarinet trio, brass section, and sitarist along with our core group was one of the most memorable music experiences of my life. It’s so lovely to see a shared depth of passion for what is truly a masterwork!

And also I had the exact same thoughts with Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite sounding menacing. In the Love show at Las Vegas they really play into that with acrobats wearing creepy circus freak costumes and even the KKK being there. The love show is an incredible experience.

I have always liked Fixing a hole. it's unique melody and structure are a departure from Paul's normally standard and commercial arrangements and feels more like a Lennon song. also, my favorite version of Mr.Kite is on the Beatles Love release, where the ending of Shes so heavy is fused into the end giving it a dark Alice in chains kind of feel to it. I'd love to hear you discuss the Love album some time.

As many years that I've studied this album, I continue to be amazed at "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite". To this day, no one can come close to its originality and expert production. It always brought to mind memories of a 1960s Peter Maxx cartoon as a backdrop to the lyrics. Creepy yet satisfying.
I've yet to hear anyone play such groove and crunch like the drum intro from the reprise version of "Sgt. Pepper's..." (just after "Good Morning" '1..2..3..4' ) I made a loop of just that section and keep it on repeat.

Thanxalot for continuing this I only have the 2CD set, I have yet to get the box when the price goes down, hopefully I'll be able to next month. This album ranks as a close 2nd with Abbey Road. But the White Album is 1 for me. I don't know if I mentioned this on here or not, I did on other TH-cam channels, I was born in 1970, and I was introduced to the Beatles from differant sources. One of those sources was The Bee Gees. In fact the first time I ever heard of a Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was through The Bee Gees. Very unfortunate for me. It just ruined it for me, the first time I heard the original Beatle version and for Abbey Road too. I think that's one of reasons why the White Album is number 1 for me. To this day as much as I love the Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road Album, it seems I can't enjoy it on the same level as someone like you can. This is why I am a strong advocate against these tribute movies like the Sgt Pepper movie and that "Across The Universe" movie that came 10 years ago I think. It's movies like that that ruins it for kids who had yet heard the Beatles. Anyway I just had to share my thoughts. In conclusion, do you think the way a person was first introduced or exposed to an album or film or any piece of art alters the way they enjoy it? I'd like to know your answer to this one question.

Certainly the best musical analysis I listened to of Getting Better, Fixing a Hole, She's Leaving Home and... last but not the least, Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite ! Though I'm mostly a medical doctor, I also play solo guitar and compose short pieces for the instrument. And truly loved your explanations about Mr.Kite. I was 17 when Sgt. Pepper was released and clearly remember the impact it had upon me, I was truly overwhelmed by the album. I already felt I was listening a major piece of great music. And now, 50 years later, as an eternal prog music fan since the beginning of the movement, and watching more and more highly complex and deep musical analysis of what The Beatles and George Martin did at that time, I become more and more fascinated. Many , many thanks for your brilliant analysis ! Congratulations !

And , yes, "She's Leaving Home" is the most beautiful collaboration Paul and John ever did. Especially faster version in mono and newest faster stereo remaster.

I trust you are familiar with "Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite/I want you (She's so heavy). That version will forever be in my mind as the best description of a music festival I went to. From 4 pm - 8 pm was very jolly and vibrant. But come night time... we were full swing in the blended "She's so heavy" section. Lucy certainly is a strange lass.

Are you reading sheet music for the "Where it will go?" bass demonstration section? Just wanted to let you know, that bass has a different rhythm there mostly on the upbeats, and also spread out.
Same thing for Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, Paul's bass is more complicated and swingy.
Otherwise, awesome analysis! Looking forward to part 3.

That was excellent i really enjoyed that. Growing up Sgt. Pepper was my favorite Beatles album. I remember when i first got it. On 8 track. I was mesmerized by it . over the years my favorite beatles album tended to change, i tend to bounce around. The white album is a big favorite of mine as is Rubber soul and revolver. But after listening to the remix it might be my favorite again. no matter what Keith Richards thinks LMAO.

  • @inyourfaceguitar5454

Interesting indeed. She's Leaving Home is very 17th century Baroque and makes one wonder how a musician that 10 years prior only knew 2 chords, E and A, who then took several buses to see a man who knew the elusive 3rd chord, B, could compose such a brilliant piece. I bet George Martin was in awe of such writing.
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite is what I consider Steampunk Brilliance. With these two pieces The Beatles could no longer be considered Pop or Rock N Roll musicians but elevated to Fine Art Musicians.
I happened to find an article pertaining to Melanie Coe dated, May 2017 in Rolling Stone Mag.

On Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite at 15:42 it should be Bb Major to A7th. You say B Major to A Major 7th which is incorrect. The cut up tape clips of Organs and Steam Calliopes are heard in the middle of the song (which is a Waltz by the way) as well as the end. The ultimate menacing version of this song is on the Love soundtrack where it segues into the nasty part of I Want You (She's So Heavy) complete with maniacal laughter and everything spinning around 360 degrees in 4 directions for the Surround Mix. The original running order for Side 1 was switched from having Mr. Kite first followed by She's Leaving Home.

The quality of your musical analysis is easily comparable to Howard Goodall's, a giant of both writing music (especially theme tunes) and musical analysis that I greatly respect. Except that he only analysed a few tracks on Sergeant Pepper in his special at the 50th Anniversary, and yours is less constrained by the requirements of public TV. And his had to interest the general listener whereas your more in-depth analysis seems to be aimed more at people who have an interest in actually writing music themselves. Mind you, he had the actual genuine, original gates of Strawberry Field in his studio, which you have singularly failed to do. Despite that, I'm still greatly looking forward to part 3.

It was Geoff Emerick, not George Martin, who was in control of engineering and production effects. George Marin wrote orchestral parts, but Emerick was the one who pioneered all the production methods like Lennon's voice on Mr. Kite, bouncing 4 track recordings to one track to fit more instruments in, and so-on. (Read Geoff Emerick's book for some really interesting info about how the Beatles albums were recorded).

To me John Lennon’s songs often had “fangs”... A bite that Paul’s didn’t... Dylan also had fangs as a writer. Paul wrote very smooth Calligraphy and John wrote like an Architect or machine builder putting disparate parts together. Generalizations of course... Love both writers...

    • @ipsurvivor
      @ipsurvivor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

TJR - Thank you... I suppose Paul’s music had teeth... Like Paperback Writer or Fool On The Hill... John also wrote Great American Songbook stuff like “Goodnight”... They had overlap in their styles and differences. Also Paul came up with the Bird like sounds On Tomorrow Never Knows... Those “creatures” added a bit of menace to that track...
