- I'm often asked what I THINK is THE BEST TRUCK in the CLASS 8 MARKET.
I don't hesitate to say PACCAR TRUCKS - Peterbilt trucks and Kenworth Trucks are the best.
From 33 years of owning trucks, I have found Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks to be very reliable and great value.
I have found the service efficient. Whenever I was in need of warranty work or other repairs, the repair shops were able to schedule my trucks quickly.
This was super important to me, in order to avoid excess downtime.
I found their warranties to be very comprehensive.
Paccar backed up their warranties as well. I've known many truck owners with Freightliners, Internationals and other makes of trucks, who have warranty issues with their trucks.
Kenworth and Peterbilt are sturdy and reliable trucks, which in my experience have served me well for my type of trucking, which for the most part has been long haul trucking.
Reliability, dependabilty and value.... all traits of a good truck.
If you have a truck which is turning a healthy profit for you, then THAT IS A GREAT TRUCK, no matter what the make!!!

You are 100% correct because when my d e f switch started acting crazy it shut the truck down so I refilled the tank and the switch still didn't reset and it cost me to lose power to where I couldn't go above 5 miles per hour cost me two days downtime as well which one of those days was Sunday and which no dealerships are open so i was stuck out in the middle of nowhere
Paccar used to be good but now is totally shit. Been running paccar for the past six years and had nothing but problems...especially the paccar engines! It doesn’t matter what you buy these days, it’s all junk now.
You forgot Western Star, world wide recognized as the superior standard.

Here is my 7 months of truck driving experience opinion.. I drive a 379 snub nose with a sleeper. Accert 550 CAT. 18 Speed. Peterbilt and Kenworth are basically the Harley Davidson of the tractor market. Harley has a dealership in every major city. Lots of available aftermarket parts. Tons of them out there, so usually someone has parts lying around they will sell. Spare chrome parts and what not. I had the opinions while riding a japanese bike before I got a Harley. "I don't need a Harley. Harley's are always broke down. Harley's are over rated" blah blah blah. Finally I got a Harley and see what the buzz is about. Great ride. Parts are easy to come by. Great power and sound. Same thing with a Paccar tractor. People talk them down, because they can't afford one or their company will not put them in one. I am home every night and the worst part about my job is when I have to get into my pickup and drive home. I wish I had a 379 I could daily as well.

My friend's Paccar threw a rod recently at just over 300K. He has gone through he'll with that engine. May be he is just talking about the truck and not the engine.
My last 2 Freightliners have performed very well. The most recent is a 2012 Fitzgerald Glider...804k on it with only one minor engine hiccup...original injectors,clutch and turbo. Profit has been my middle name.
I have to roll my windows down to close my doors on my 379 and it’s an 07 with 2,000,000 miles on it
for real!! You always see the Cascadias and Internationals at the side of the road. Its ridiculous.
Kenworth is the biggest selling brand class 8 in Australia, they even have a factory here. We have every brand of truck here imaginable, more brands than the USA, yet KW outsells them all by a country mile. Volvos and Scania are considered a round town truck. If you want to drag a 175 tonne 4 trailer roadtrain, KW is #1 seller.

Agree but the aussie Kenworth road train is a different beast to the American stuff. They don't have a t908 do they? and I don't think you can get a t680 in Australasia can you?

As a Peterbilt and Kenworth fan, I stand with you on your comments about Paccar building top quality trucks. We have a production plant in Australia and the trucks built there are all custom built, specced according to their intended work and built to a standard, not a price. Our range starts with the T359 (in 6x4, 8x4 and 10x4 specs) then goes up through the T409/T409SAR, T610/T610SAR (utilising the North American T680 cab) up to the T659. T909, K200 COE and C5 Series. The C5 Series are the biggest trucks Kenworth make in Australia, utilising three models: C509, C510 and C540. The C509 takes the T909 chassis and builds on that to make a heavy duty truck built for heavy duty applications, such as road train, heavy haul and mining.
Some folks on here are complaining that the vid is biased. So what if it is. That's part of our economic system. It's called consumer preference. If most folks prefer kws' or peterbilts then maybe the other manufacturers should work on making a better product. That's all part of competition. Make a product folks like and can afford or your company dies.

I'm not going to agree or disagree with you. Plus I've heard horror stories about fixing peterbuilts and kenworth trucks. But all trucks have there issue.
I work for peterbilt in Denton tx as a mechanical engineer. But I’m one of two or three that have mechanic background. I worked at a rush peterbilt and have the experienced of knowing what fail and what is a better solution. Now I’m taking my mechanic experience and putting my two cents in help designing and building a quality truck. Thank you for the video. I’m going to show this to my upper regional boss.

Why can't you put doors on your PETE'S that could be driven in Alaska in the winter without freezing to death. It's not just me because you will not find a Pete with Alaska plates in in the winter. I called Kenworth on the subject and was told they been after The Pete factory for years and have gotten nowhere.

If it’s made by man it will eventually wear out break down or let you down none of them run flawlessly even if you stay on top of all your PM’s things happen. As technology advances trucks are becoming more complex for creature comforts,safety, economy, logistics, epa, creating more things that can and will go wrong. If there were such a thing as trouble free vehicle I’m not sure any of us could afford such a beast.
I’ll take my Detroit Series 60 12.7 Glider over a Pacar engine any day.
My 14 L 60 series makes over 600 hp. 60 series best truck engine ever made.

pacar was actually shortened from pacific car and freight they actually started off making railroad box cars!
We have 8 trucks all 99 fld126 we maybe have a breakdown once a year but nothing major they get about eight miles to the gallon and we get them rebuilt at about 1.5 million and we work on all our own stuff so even a turbo 1 hour job no problem back on the road
You posted this 2 years ago. In a different video you posted a year ago, you did NOT mention Paccar engine as one of the 10 best. Why?
When I drove a KW it was always easy to get service, now that I drive a piece of shit “Vulva”, I miss those days. Volvo... a plastic modified cab over.🤬

One of my favorite things about Peterbilt and Kenworth is the fact that they still make a great classic style truck, and they make the big jellybean trucks too.

The last good trucks that Freightliner made was the FLC and the Classic. The FLD Also held their own.
I like Pete 379 but don’t buy with Paccar Moter Get C 15 cat Cummings or Detroit Paccar socks
Just an idea , you might do a video on why the mega carriers get rid of their trucks early because they know the freightliners are going to start falling apart and then brag about having the newest fleets

None, he's a trucker, he drives Pete's because for him in Canada it is what got the job done. If you listen to the end dude you'd heard Him say if the truck makes you money REGARDLESS OF THE MAKE it's a good truck. So it's not just shit to do only with peterbilts and Kenworth trucks. And I use to drive a Pete, only thing I hated was the damn Cummins in it

I had a 2014 t680 with paccar mx13 thing was a piece of junk finely gave up trying to keep it on the road when it started blowing off coolant changed head and gasket but a week later started leaking at head gasket was told it would need a new engine spent 40k in 2 years just trying to keep it going and the warranty payed about 40 k also switched to a cascadia about a year ago no issues with it
Stevens has always been KW for the 26 years I've been there. We have only recently added Pets and freight liners.

I worked as a security guard at the gate of a reclamation site seeing and watching the trucks pulling through that gate and I can tell that the best engine sound was for peterbilt and kw.

Even local freightshakers are always in the shop. Our lot had 2 sterlings on regular rotation cause we always had 1 or 2 out of 10 trucks in the shop

Also, have you ever come across a box trailer with a round front end, where even with a short day cab, it would be next to impossible to jacknife the trailer?
I have a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia Auto Trans 505hp. Had it since 2014 and never had to take it to the shop. Had not one single issue with it

2016 Kenworth T 660 glider kit just checking in. 12.7 Detroit Diesel series 60 powered with a 13 speed, Studio sleeper Diamond interior and a whole lot of attitude! Great video. One of the main reasons I switched to KW is the fact that many other dealerships in the Southeast are open 24 hours 7 days a week. That is a big help if you need a part sometimes you can get work done during those hours.

I drove a 1998 385 pete for years. It was the best truck ever. It healed up good and was a simple designed and easy to fix. The only downside was that parts were expensive but I guess you get what you pay for.

Freight shaker yes I recall spending off days with a Freightliner 14 hours waiting on warranty work...It was a lovely truck all done out but headaches in the rainy season in CA make a right turn and ya gut a cold shower...this was 1992 and it was a 1993
frite liner...Last I heard it had transmission problems all for 65k it was a cOe speced for triples. You make much sense...and dollars.
Great video, I'll add some insider info I learned after speaking to the owner of a large trucking company. They own over 75 class 8s, what he said to me is they will no longer be purchasing Diesel haulers; They will be upgrading their fleet with Tesla semi trucks as they replace their oldest models and their fleet ages out. Take that for what it's worth but I tend to agree that is the future and it will improve their margins greatly compared to anything else on the market

Never drove a KW or Pete that I didn't like. Definitely can't say that about the Volvos I've been running the past few years.

I don’t care what anybody says. Any real trucker appreciates a kw or pete. A driver can take pride in his ride when you drive a nice longhood pete or kw.
I've always been a fan of Pete 379s and KW W900s, but lately, I have had a thing for old flat-top Freightliner classics. I hope I get lucky and get a good one when I get my own truck.

I do agree with him about Freightliner. They have gone down quite a bit because they got rid of the classic. I own an 03 Classic XL, and love it. But, I do not agree with the down time. My truck has only been in the shop one time because I had a bad Jake solenoid on the center set from when I bought it. Freightliner is also cheaper for parts. I got the same brand airlines at Freightliner, for $140 that i would have paid $250 at Paccar.

I was turned away from two Pete shops because is was a warrantee repair. I lost two days pay!
After emissions came out all trucks went to crap. Doesn’t matter what you drive. All will die. Especially if you get a Cummins with DEF you’ll get around 500-600 k and truck is done for needs overhaul. It’s a joke what these pathetic emissions have done to these trucks!

What and see with X15 Cummins. Less issue than ISX15.
Just delete it and run Schaeffers oils and fuel treatments. It’ll hold up just as long as a Series 60.......just not like a 3406E caterpillar
In the 90's I worked in a shop owned by several truckers who ran the ice road in Alaska. They preferred Peterbilt's air ride suspension systems and showed me how Peterbilt used several mid sized components in their Air Trac system that could be easily replaced or adjusted, unlike the huge trailing arms of the Neway type suspension system where the bushings and components are so large, they're impossible to replace, unless you have a hundred ton portable press, and even then, those bushings come out of the housings, like a bullet out of a gun.
Do you maintain a warranty on your older trucks, like your 2004? Or would you just fix it yourself if anything major happens?
I flat out REFUSE to drive a Cascadia or an Automatic. I walked the last highway job I had for that exact reason. Let the haters and trolls comment, but that is my truth. I refuse to run JUNK. First Cascadia I ever drove flat out died fully loaded at 62mph on the freeway through Cowtown. I dry steered it off the freeway in front of the Flying J. I refused that contract. 3 months later the company I drove for swapped me from a 70mph 18spd 500 Cummins Volvo to a Cascadia idrive DD goverened to 65 and I walked. Plain and simple.

I drive a 2018 Kenworth T680 with a x15 cummins that a company gave me with only 60 miles on the odometer. Now with 280k miles with very little problems on it. From there, I will never drive a freightliner or Volvo again. My kenworth is by far the most reliable truck I have ever driven

Hi, can you tell me what the average speed of a OTR semi gets across North America?
I cannot find this stat anywhere, except on my E-log machine which can range from 4mpr one day to 48mpr the next day. Depending on traffic, construction and city to hwy driving.
Where do you have the work done on the engines? Any of the big dealers? I'm looking at a 2014 t660 with an MX 13. Where will I get it serviced? I only see cat, Cummins and dd on the shop signs. Thanks

jahrhythm I worked at Pete. We hated Pacar. Get anything but pacar.
Well how about this one: Caterpillar C15 (Pre or after Acert) great engines, loads of torque at low rpm and good fuel milage as a result.
Cummins makes the best engines out there, easy to fix and as reliable as they get
W900L is a great choice.. But maybe consider a glider kit. No emission issues. Personally I would get a 6nz cat.
I personally find the Paccar MX13 gutless for Super B. Preferred the Cummins ISX

Your correct on freightliner, your forgetting about Western Star, I own a paccar now and have always driven them, literally always, but in switching to Western Star, better built than paccar, better warrantee than paccar, and way better price, yes I know they are owned by the same company as freightliner, but are a completely different entity, just a better built tougher rugged truck... absolutely Pete’s and kenworth have the looks, but turning heads never made me more money
but i still prefer the sound of the old 2 valve detroit over a paccar
I agree Dave, the company I drive for had International then for engine choice available they switched to Freightliner, well after a few years they tried a Kenworth and their eyes were opened, now that's all their buying now since 09. An old guy looked at the KW and said their still solid like he had in 68
It's quite obvious Freightliner isn't Mercedes even though they're owned by them. Usually at least here in Europe the Mercedes service is excellent.

Never had any trouble getting service in a Freightliner dealership. I'm presently in a 2020 T 680. It has a Cummins engine. My DDEC 15 out pulls this Cummins hands down. The engine computer has been a nightmare so far. One problem after another. If I were buying my own, after this 6 months in my Kenworth, I would buy a Freightliner.
How many miles you put on your def systems and my Freightliner has over 560000 and def is really only problem I've had
I agree with you. Kenworth and Peterbilt makes the best and reliable trucks compared to Western Stars and Freightliner. But have to add that European trucks like Volvo and Scania are pretty tough too.

From watching your videos, I know you're a Pete man. My dad was too and he was ready to choke the life out of me when I bought my first tractor, a Freightliner! This was back in 1999. The thing is that every part of every vehicle is mass produced so you're bound to get a bad one now and then no matter what brand you buy. I own 5 Freightliners now and they're all making me money. My only complaint about Freightliner is that they don't offer a truck that looks like a truck anymore, you know, dual stacks and all the chrome that makes it a truck. That's why I had my 2 Classic XLs completely gone through 2 years ago. I also own 2 Cascadias as well as a 95 FLD 12064 which is the truck that upset dad so much! My point is...they're all good trucks no matter what emblem is on the grille...except for that 1 in 1000 that's a bad apple. Be safe out there!
Loved my extended hood Pete’s the past 25 years but my new Volvo does ride better , way more quiet, better insulated , and you can’t beat there new automatic transmission , my last KW was broke down often with DEF issues . I agree Pete is best looking but they aren’t getting 7.5 mpg fuel mileage . It’s all about fuel mileage now days . Miss my Pete but love my 18 Volvo .

Started out driving in freightliner columibia flat tops. I miss having a big 550 Detroit and desk on the sleeper but man you CANNOT beat the ride of a t660 or 389. More comfortable sleepers in the paccar stuff too!
My only experience with Paccar was driving a KW T660 and for the entire time that I drove that thing, it gave me so many problems, from leaving me stranded on the interstate, in the middle of a work site, holding up traffic, to minor nuisances such as the AC not working, to drinking up coolant faster than any truck I've seen, and giving me the middle finger if I didnt constantly fill it. I experienced so many issues that I never had to worry about in a Cascadia. Probably if I had a better model I'd love Paccar stuff, but as it currently stands, I definitely prefer frieghtliners, lol

How about Paccars new DPF system? Has it been improved over past systems? Is idling overnight ok? I want to purchase a new 389 but the dpf system concerns me. Thank you.

The only reason Freightliner has market share is the DD 15.....If Cat had been a bit more energetic in figuring out the DEF issue...Then I wouldn't have to ride around in my plastic box

Ive driven Volvo/Scam-ia/DAF=> Paccar/Peterbilt well gues what if The Netherlands would allow EXHD trucks and normal trailers (length of the truck & trailer without issues) id be driving a Pete 379 all day every day. Because it's a solid truck... Like Dave says: It makes you money instead of costing you money.
Volvo's they are ok... But they have thier issues aswell. They like to slurp loads of Adblue.
For now unfortunaly i have to deal with a Scam-ia.... an absolute nightmare with acceleration. The only thing good about a Scam-ia is the Retarded Retarder which actualy works like a dream.

I've got a friend that still drives the first truck that he bought new, a 1984 Peterbilt 359 EXHD, and it has around 5 million miles on the chassis. The engine has been rebuilt 4 times.

Drove a Peterbilt 587 on my last highway job with a big Cummins over 500 horse and 1850 foot pounds of torque, bolted to a 18 speed stick. Awesome truck could do 600milles a day and still feel good, super comfy and quiet.
