@@blindenergy6694 Why not Byzantium, or Chalcedon like the Greeks called it? Undoubtedly the Phoenicians, had yet another name for it, before then! I still hope, that I go back again some day! Play carefully, & smile often!
@@MikeH-sg2uego! Just go! I can recommend a good hotel. I've been to Istanbul twice now, in 2022 and 2024. Thoroughly amazing. I also loved having tea under the Valens aqueduct!
Hagia Sophia actually built with some structural flaws, cause it was built in a rush. To correcting structural weaknesses, some additional structural supports added in different times, as fist made just a few years after construction and last one made by Ottoman architects. Especially new support arcs added outer circumference of Hagia Sophia's main dome in late 16. century (can be seen as grey parts around the dome). These supports literally saved the dome from risk of collapse over time and ensured this magnificent historical heritage reaching present.
This Grand Orthodox Cathedral, was the Seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople for a thousand years (until 1453). Today it’s St. George Cathedral.
i was here two years ago. great piece of art ✌🏿
In 1975, I visited Hagia Sophia, in November.
I’ll never forget it,
nor will I forget the rest of Istanbul!
Hope to return one day!
