  • Baseball legend Willie Mays, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, has passed away, the San Francisco Giants announced. Mays, who was 93, was the oldest living member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Giants made the announcement on social media, stating: "It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93," the team posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday. No further details about his death were provided.
Major League Baseball (MLB) also expressed its sorrow, saying it was "heartbroken" over the loss of "one of the most exciting all-around players in the history of our sport."
Nicknamed the “Say Hey Kid,” Mays was celebrated for his remarkable career as a center fielder. He was twice named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) and won the World Series with the Giants in 1954.
Over 23 major league seasons, primarily with the New York/San Francisco Giants but also including one season in the Negro Leagues, Mays batted .301, hit 660 home runs, amassed 3,293 hits, scored more than 2,000 runs, and won 12 Gold Gloves. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1951, earned the MVP title twice, and finished in the top 10 for the MVP award 10 additional times.
Our deepest condolences go out to Willie Mays' family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. Details regarding his funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed.
