  • Kyle heads out with Brian (i1Tesla) in the brand new Model Y with less than 50 miles on it for a test of range. This is a Performance Upgrades car with the 21” wheels so we will have to test the 19” and 20” wheel offerings in the future to see how much better efficiency those cars will get. In the end of the video Kyle breaks down total battery capacity in kWh and discusses the best way to measure degradation and why it’s important to do this test when your car is new and then to compare results in the future (measuring degradation).

    When doing a mileage check like this you need a route that goes to a point and returns to the start. This compensates for elevation and wind direction/speed.

    Great video and test, cheers Kyle and Brian! The 57kWh makes for a nice comparison point with our 2017 Bolt EV, which is about the pack size, at least in terms of comfortable use. We can get 4 mi/kWh out of the Bolt in the conditions you saw, so around 250 watt hours per mile. That's at 70mph though...punch it up to 80mph and range drops like a brick!
    Be interesting to see what the most efficient Y long range can do in comparison. Keep testing and thanks again for doing the early tests we all want to see 👍

      From what I can see, it is indeed a lot less efficient than a Model 3 than it was made to be here and on the tesla website. I think the EPA rating is misleading on this one and will throw a lot of people off and we will have a lot of angry folks writing forum posts. The difference between this and the 3 on this run is around 100km or 60 miles (315miles to 270 miles). The 21 inch while does make a slight difference, I can't imagine it being 60 miles on a 70mph run. I am not sure if they will ever make a RWD LR Y, but if they do, that one might do a lot better. This one is 200kg heavier from what I can see. It might be a good car, but I will still keep my 3 because of the efficiency. We will have to wait and see.

    • @Brendon471
      @Brendon471 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tesla Killer Huh? I had the complete opposite reaction. My 2019 Model 3 gets around 290 Wh/mi on 19” wheels going ~75 in the summer. The fact that the Model Y (a bigger, heavier car) gets better efficiency with wheels that are 2” larger is crazy!
      I’ve literally never seen my Model 3 get 270 Wh/mi cruising at 70-75mph on the highway, in fact it usually gets closer to 300 Wh/mi. Can’t even imagine how good the Y will do on the regular 20” wheels.

    • @teslakiller6959
      @teslakiller6959 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Brendon471 I don't know what you are doing or how you drive, but at 70mph I am at about 140-150Wh/km max. That is 220-240Wh/m, much like this test showed - and he had a P, but with lighter 18". I am on AWD 18" stock, but without the aero and I doubt the 19" will be much different, to be honest. I don't see it adding 20%+ more drag to the math.
      Maybe you have a hilly surface or a lot of wind - but those consumptions are not normal at 86F and 70mph...Maybe you run the HVAC too inefficiently or too much weight. Might wanna check my video on the HVAC topic. I also have some screenshots of my consumption in those temperatures after a 250 miles run.

    Will the 18 inch fit the larger brake calipers? I have a performance Y ordered it was supposed to be delivered 22nd to SF center. I pulled out ? Editing the FSD as they didn’t honor the 5k price when i made an edit to the car removing the seven seat configuration caused the prices to be recalculate not to happy so rather than paying higher DMV fees I’ll add the FSD as its only a Software add if and when they get closer to actually having it work. Rescheduled the delivery for May we will see but with all that’s going on it may be longer. All good maybe it will have some newer updates. But buyer beware if you make an edit to your order they reprice the car!

    Good info for a start. Pack size (212.5 mi + 61 mi) x 270 Wh/mi = 73.8 KWh, 212.5 mi / (100% - 22%) x 270 Wh/mi = 73.6 KWh. The race track is more important than range in a SUV?

    Was it flat ground or uphill or downhill? I've found hills make a lot of difference. Also it kind of sucks in the USA where people drive 80+ that if you do that in a Tesla the range really drops. ALWAYS buy the biggest battery they have. The rest can be upgraded later if you don't have the money to get autopilot. I made a horrible mistake of getting the 240mi SR+ with autopilot. I should have got the LR and added it later if I wanted it. I only can get about 180 miles in the actual range.

      Smaller wheels, thicker rubber is better. Seriously you don't want to know how much it costs to repair a bent rim and you won't be able to lift the wheel as it is too heavy. Get thick rubber on smaller wheels. Much more range, less harshness, more comfort.

    Interesting result from that size of wheel, in a way it's a pity you had swapped to 18"s on your car (the 20's would have been an interesting reference), pure speculation (I'm no aerodynamicist) but ..... the design of the 21's looks as if they have paid attention to aero (compare the spokes of the M3 20's), centre cap covers the bolts (reminds me of the 19's I have on order from thenewaero) , the shape of the spokes remind me of a jet engine turbine vane, there are more them and they are closer together, smaller gaps between them giving less drag ? CDA of the Y must surely be higher than the 3 (it has a bigger frontal area) so that would count against it, maybe the heat pump is helping (which surely they will bring to the 3) ? As you'll know (from the i3 and your 18's) the width of the wheel will play a part, is the 21 narrower than the 20 ? Doesn't look it. Pack design / chemistry ?

      Model 3 is more "track" optimized, model Y is more "family" optimized lol.
      Suspension is stiffer on Model 3, which provides better handling, but can be a bit bumpier as a trade-off. No freebies there... I guess unless you have something like dynamic air suspension, which may give you best of both worlds if done right, but with cost and part maintenance as the trade-off.
      So basically either model can be considered "better" depending on your use case priorities.

    If you check the interior fit and finish. The B pillar has a massive gap at the top compared to the Model 3. Check 1:47 (Model Y) against 4:53 (Model 3). I'd have to say that is a little disappointing and hopefully fixable. Especially since I want a Model Y instead of a Model X

      If you're trying to compare it to filling up a gas tank, it'll usually be cheaper than filling with gas, barring some ideal scenario in a Prius with gas prices crashing or something... hmm lol.
      Of course if 99 percent of your charging is done at home then it's not a competition, we did the math on our use case and it was a 75% savings vs gas fillup. And if you have a good solar home setup then it could potentially be close to free. We did not, but may be tempted to "subscribe" to Tesla solar when we order our Tesla EV.
      You may need to consider your own driving habits and use case and then see how it compares to your current car, it'll vary.

    11:00 A few points on the calculation (even though it was in this case pretty accurate, due to the efficiency matching the constant - straight lines matching dotted lines under energy)
    You don't calculate the rated range based on the consumption you did, but based on the specific constant for each Model. The remaining rated range that you see in the battery symbol near the speed is always calculated based on that constant. (the energy graph uses the consumption though, but only from 0-96%, confusing I know!)
    At 8:30 you can see the straight line - this shows you the constant Tesla uses for each Model. On this particular model Y it seems it is around 280Wh/m (175Wh/km) - try to match it next time around to know what it is for sure. This is a bit strange, because this yields around 275 miles rated (77kWh divided by 280Wh/m) and not the advertised 315miles. This is the first time Tesla is deviating so much from EPA. Usually the constant is always matching EPA. On Model 3 LR AWD, the constant is around 153Wh/km (245Wh/m) I don't know the exact numbers in miles because miles are very inaccurate. If you want to do those calculation, make sure to switch to KM. The 153Wh/km matches the 500km EPA at 76,5kWh. This is why a lot of people don't see any "degradation" unless they go below 76,5kWh, which comes after a couple of months of ownership. Also, the Model 3 doesn't have 74kWh, it has 77-78kWh when brand new, but you can only see the extra 3.5kWh if you go below 0%.
    This is why when you test the 100%-0% you only get the 74kWh max!
    From what you tested, 73.5kWh, it seems the Y uses the exact same battery pack. From what we have seen it seems that the Y is indeed not as efficient as the 3, but this is a P. But I imagine we will see a lot of people complaining that they can't get anywhere near the 315 miles, because if you only do 270miles on this sunny day driving straight 70mph, they will have hard time doing more. I can't wait for the forum posts to start pouring in...
    I explain all the buffer thing and the below 0% and how Tesla kind of lies about the range estimation, if you are interested to understand more on the subject you can check my videos
