    I don't believe this cost under $30k. Because it looks a Million $$$$. BTW looking at your video editing style and attention to detail in the built, I totally believe not only did you do a fantastic job but the Picasso art work would be reliable, easy to source parts for and cheap to maintain. Well done.

      The guy was pretty amazing at keeping costs down - using a junkyard motor and selectively rebuilding it, tranny, and painted it himself. That alone saved at least 15-20k (depending on the alternative).

    Nice build, my dad and I did one years ago with a mustang 2 frame and fiberglass body kit. It has a 427 cobra jet in it now but originally it had a standard 427. The build and was almost as fun as the car is. I’ve been thinking of doing a factory five build with my son once he gets a little older my dad still has the 247 his kit started out with and it’d be cool to pass that down.

    I had a CAV GT-40 that cost me 59,000$ and was clocked over 195 mph and was comfortable to drive and started and ran as good as my Toyota Camry for more than 11 years when I sold it. OH, the optima red top battery lasted until after I sold it. It was not a good car to drive after dark because all the other cars low beam lights would blind you because I was so low to the road.

    Nice car and thanks for sharing. I know making the video was a hassle but I really appreciate you doing it for us. Does a cobra normally have power steering? Obviously I have never driven one...

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the comment Don- i like making the videos (call it my other hobby). I do not think the Cobra ever had power steering and you don't need it. Only reason i included a pump is because i was running a 5.0HO block - its a reverse rotation water pump/timing cover so to run a serpentine belt system (1 belt), i had to add another pulley to flip the belt. I could have just added an idler pulley, but a Ford powersteering pump reman from autozone was cheap ($80?) - almost as much as an aftermarket idler. I already had a power rack so i just added the hoses. PS was not part of my plan, just something i went with given the engine configuration. Great question/comment-

    1. Trust me, 500 hp vs 300 in a Cobra at 2,250 lbs. Does make a huge difference in fun factor.
    2. You did a beautiful job with that build, your video editing abilities, attention to detail and organizing of costs are boarder line anal.
    3. If you don't have the mechanical ability you can buy that car for $40k or less. I no longer put that much value in personal accomplishment. The older I get the more I tend to revert back to an instant gratification mentality and enjoying life now.
    4. Make sure you get that high five and share. Happy wife happy life, And you'll get to keep that car.

      If you can screw something together then you can do this. It comes with complete instructions. The base kit needs the more work, you can opt to pay more for the kit to have most of it finished for you. Leaving only installing the parts, drive line and paint to have a finished product. FFR kits allow you the choice. More time than money get the basic kit. More money than time, get the fully upgraded kit.

      @ztbirdman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mark Bergren, wow! You are married to a woman (?) who tells you what you can and can’t do? I’m sorry but I’m married also yet my wife doesn’t tell me what to do.
      Now to be honest, I do discuss major purchases and plans with her. But if I really want something, particularly a car or truck, she never tells me NO. We discuss finances and if it’s something that I REALLY REALLY want, she only wants to know how much fun will she get out of it. Of course, I will let her drive things first if that’s what she wants. But something as powerful as the FFR Cobra that I would build, she would definitely want me to teach her the ins and outs of how to handle it before she gets behind the steering wheel. She is extremely beautiful (she keeps me close to her when we go anywhere since she gets hit on every time I wander off) but also extremely smart. She knows her limitations and since I have driven in SCCA and NHRA (stock to Top Fuel) she defers to me when it comes to fast vehicles. Then, of course, I teach her and she catches on quickly so she starts slowly but doesn’t take long to get up to speed.
      Maybe if you get your wife involved with it she will be more apt to say yes. It never hurts to see. That is unless you want to be away from her. If that’s the case, you’re on your own. Sorry my friend.

    Very good analysis on the hard cost for for a cobra replica build (whether it be a FF or any other iteration of the cobra). Also a lot of common sense, I've seen so many builds with the 500hp motor and 10k paint jobs. At the end of the day when you take it to a cars and coffee or the like, from 10 feet away, 99 out of a100 people wont know the difference between your build or 100k CSX. Its all about the fun, the experience and nothing wrong with sweat equity
    That said, very nice build, glad to see a replica with no fake badging and signatures.

    I was looking at your figures and (I'm presently in negotiations with my wife), one thing you didn't list was how much you spent on tools. I have never built a car before but it has been a dream I've had that when I retire, it would do this, So, I see you painted your car, which for me, that would be another expense. Those details would add a significant cost to my build as I have only a few tools right now. I don't know how many tools you had or how much you think you saved by painting the car yourself. I am looking at probably $45K for my project depending on cost for donor parts. I am inspired by you and others I've seen and am eager to do more research. Thanks for this video!

    • @TacoJoe
      @TacoJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the comment / biggest tool expense I purchased specifically for my build was the compressor for paint ($400ish?) and the moisture separator/HVLP guns/etc. (est. $150?) Beyond this and some of the engine tools, only other "special" tool I can think of that the typical garage mechanic doesn't have is a riveter-celco. I used my regular cordless drill / wrenches / jigsaw / angle grinder / you name it. If you are interested, Factory Five rolls up a "tools required" list at the start of the build manuals - that's a great starting point. Odds are though, you will have much of what you need- check out the forums too / lots of good advice here on what you need/etc

  • @davem5333

    I see a lot of people build these things and get crazy on the power. Think that their car can't be real unless it has 6-700HP. Even if the original kicked butt with about a little over 300. I don't know what they are trying to prove or if they are compensating for something lacking.
    Don't see any reason why a Cobra replica needs more than 400HP. Just burn up tires and unbalance the car. Additional expense for more power than you will ever be able to use.

    If I bought a kit car from Factory Five, I would expect everything included with the kit plus step-by-step instructions. All the extra parts you had to buy on the internet or wherever is a colossal pain in the ass and I wouldn't have a clue how to do that. I love the look of the end product and it's performance but unless the process is straight forward step-by-step I couldn't imagine taking on a project like this. I have to say that the price of the completed project seems reasonable.
