    Can you provide information backing that you caught a lahontan in Wyoming. I worked for fish hatcheries in Wyoming and was under the impression we had 4 recognized subspecies. Yellowstone, snake river, Colorado river, and bear river or bonneville. I believe the fish you caught was a bonneville. We don’t have lahontan cutts here

    • @abqheitmans
      @abqheitmans 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. Region and biology say that was a Bonnie

      Came her to say this ;) but also to say there is an N he was missing. If I wasn’t from southern Oregon where they really are native, for some reason it really got to me. Great video all the same though

    As a Wyomingite, it’s cool to see LaBarge Creek featured here. Great spot for the Colorado Cut and one of the few in Wyoming. If you follow that road up and over the divide, you’re in Bonneville Cutthroat territory. These are are to of the native cuts in Wyo. the other two are the Snake and the Yellowstone. We call it the the Cut Slam here and the game and fish give you a medallion and certificate if you catch all four. Tight lines buddy!

    • @FLYALLSZN
      @FLYALLSZN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bonneville is what I had in my head and research.. but my exhausted mouth said lohontan for some reason.. I’d love to try the cutty slam! Only two more to go!!

    • @russlehman2070
      @russlehman2070 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can get three of the four subspecies in that area of Wyoming (the Wyoming Range): Colorado River Cutthroat in LaBarge Creek, Bonneville Cuttrhoat in the Bear River (Smith's Fork) drainage, and Snake River cutthroat in the Greys River. The headwaters of LaBarge Creek, Smith's Fork and the Greys River are within a few miles of each other, as there is a major triple divide point nearby.

      It won’t be a great spot if people like you keep spot burning small streams. The entire green river watershed holds cutthroat trout. You should know better considering you’re from ‘Wyoming’?? Which I really doubt

      Me too, I've been fly fishing for over 50 years. When I frist started, before "A River Runs Through It", it was so easy to catch fish on the fly, especally in California where nobody flyfished. The trout eat flies and none had a hook attached. In Yosemite, I caught fish all day long even between swimmers on dry flies. Crowds would watch me as I caught fish after fish, while worm and egg fisherman were less fortunate. Congrats on a great video. Great camera work, scenery, wild fish, and narration.
      Wow, I never thought about it, flyfishing over 50 years. As I look back, the fish I remember most is that one trout that took my bucktail caddis dry, then sped all the way across the river, turned downstrean, and as I followed I filled my chest waders, stumbled after him as he keep running. And as he swam into the lake, a hundred yards downstream, I said to myself, I got you now. Thats when the hook floated up to the serface and I thought, good for you, that is how you grew so big, you are a wise old fish. He was big, biggest trout I ever hooked and on a dry fly. That was a long time ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday, and it's the one's that get away, that you remember most, and keeps you coming back.

    Great cutthroats. We are in northern Idaho. I’m going to try the upper St Joe in the next few days. Caught my first good cutthroat in the Salmon River near Stanley on a large stone pattern. Salmon flies outTough fishing, even the small trout make you work. Caught a few Whitefish too. Spent a few days on the South Fork Payette, mainly small rainbows and some Whitefish. Finished a week on the Locsha River and found it tough again. Small fish mainly, less than 12” but all Cutthroat. Caught most on dry but the largest, maybe 14” on a large stone fly nymph. Only 3 or 4 caught in a typical morning. Idaho has been tough this summer. It’s hot in northern Idaho but luckily no wildfires. Thanks for your videos.

    I like the technique of hitting the water that looks too hard from the road! So many times I stop at the same place every other lazy chump stops and say "wow, that is beautiful, and easy to get to, I got to fish here." The best road-side or even backcountry trail-side fishing is often at a random, literally random, stops with a bit of slog to the water. Thanks.

      Colorado Cuts in the La Barge drainage (drains into Green River, which flows to the Colorado River), Bonneville Cuts in the Bear River drainage which flows into the Great Salt Lake. Snake River fine spotted cuts in Grey's River, which flows into the Snake River. Yellowstone Cuts are only found in streams that flow into the Yellowstone River (Wind River, Slough Creek, Gallatin River...)

    Not sure why there weren't others at those great spots, but who's arguing? If I might speculate, it might be the drive in - I know that is probably the case for the new area in Tennessee I fished last month; not that hard to fish once you got there, but the drive did take more than a little while. That tends to discourage most people, which is fine by me.

    25:26 My guess would be mink. I feel like we can rule out avian predators (herons and osprey) because of how deep the wound is. The mark looks about the size of a minks mouth.

    Why as a Colorado native, I buy a annual Wyoming fishing license!! That area is Golden, great small water fisheries. and Green River is as good as the Mighty North Platte!!
