Composer: Arcangelo Corelli
Artists: Musica Amphion, Pieter-Jan Belder (harpsichord, organ & concert master)
It may seem surprising: can 10 discs really contain all of Arcangelo Corelli’s output? They can, and do, but the surprise is merited, for the influence and reputation of these works far outstrips their quantity (and how often can one say that of a Barock composer!). On display here is the apogee of Barock form as displayed in the genres of Solo Sonatas, Trio Sonatas and Concerti Grossi, full of sparkling virtuosity and an intimate knowledge and love of the violin and its potential as a solo instrument.
The influence was felt most immediately in Rome, where he was based for his adult life, but publication of these collections soon earned him a name across Europe, as much as his prowess as a solo violinist did; for this was the golden age of the composer as creator, when composition went hand in hand with performance. Of course there is plenty more music Corelli composed which hasn’t survived, or at least not on manuscripts with his name on them, for Corelli as an impresario frequently staged oratorios to which he would have contributed sinfonias and instrumental numbers.
What survives is never less than highly polished; often bold, and continually inventive, as is more than evident in these performances from a welcome and uniform perspective by a leading Dutch period-instrument ensemble. And it’s unique; there is no other Corelli box on the market, nor has such a project ever been attempted before or since.

Hello. Is there an option to purchase this collection digitally?
En los momentos de serena introspección, la música de Corelli es la mejor compañía.
I used to play his 6 concerto grossi for my HS math students while they quietly worked on problems. It set a great mood for them.
How nice. I would have enjoyed that very much if someone was playing at my school like that. My friends on the other hand back then would have thrown the text books at you to stop playing I can imagine. Wish I could play my cello that well, still learning...Cheers.
I might have ended up being able to do maths if I'd been in your class. Instead, I was forced to become a poet...
Me,I hate mathematics, but love very much Corelli's music...
Who cares?
@oldones59 obviously you don't. 🙄 for that you get 60 minutes of after school detention!
Corelli was so brilliant that influenced some of my personal heroes: Telemann and J. S. Bach...how good you got to be to make an influence on some Father of the Music's fugues?
I will never understand this but my love for his legacy is as true as his genious. He also influenced me. That's why I conduct a baroque ensemble and called it "Corelli Musici". It was one of our golden moments to perform Sonata No. 10 in G minor, a couple of years ago.
Thank you for posting this.
True! But how good one has to be to make an influence on some Father of the Music's fugues? Corelli's first name was Arcangelo which is the Italian word for archangel... so, trusting in Nomen Est Omen, we have a clue as to how Corelli could make an influence on some Father of the Music's fugues :)
Felipe de J. Cervera
You name Bach and Telemann but unaccountably did not mention Handel!
Corelli’s influence on Handel was overwhelming, lifelong, and transformed Handel’s style.
As late as 1739, Handel wrote his twelve Concerti Grossi Opus 6 which are closely modelled on Corelli’s own Opus 6 set of twelve seminal and massively influential concerti grossi.
There is pretty much zero of Bach or Telemann in Handel’s Opus 6; Bach for example was more interested the more modern solo or multiple concertos of Vivaldi.
You are quite right about the importance and influence of Corelli; my point is that is was rather odd to omit Handel from your list.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 You can also add that Corelli influenced François Couperin and Purcell. Both of them composed trio sonatas.
Thank you for sharing your love for Corelli
@@elinathanferlay1013 that's true
I can't stop listening. They are similar each but which all other nuances combining, I am unable to unplug mine ears !!
As you can tell by scrolling down this comment section:
Music is international.
It is its own language. Everyone can understand and everyone can speak of it. It's awesome!!
Thanks for the upload!
Nothing like smoking some weed and listening to some real oldies 😉
So soothingly beautiful!
What you from Brilliant Classics do for the higher culture of music is of immeasurable value. Selling complete Collections of classical music to the masses at prices, they can afford. That goes one giant step against the cultural decay... if the classical music culture is to survive, we need to get everyone we can on-board... and money should not be an obstacle. Who wants a special interpretation can still choose to spend more money on such works which is also important...but first, one has to KNOW what there is.. in particular, how much...
Corelli instantly makes me smile......
First Brilliant Classics CD I purchased! To me Corelli is king of Baroque! It doesn't get better than this. Great for after work, reading, having a few. Its the ultimate evening music as well. Can't go wrong with Corelli!
to me King is Telemann Am sorry
Amen!
@@jordiuso9256
The two composers are not really comparable.
Corelli 1653 - 1713,
Telemann 1681 - 1767.
Additionally, almost all their major works were written in entirely different genres, not to mention one is clearly Italian, the other German - you’re comparing apples and pears.
In his Opus 5 Violin sonatas, and Opus 6 Concert Grossi, Corelli scaled peaks only occasionally approached by Telemann.
We can all thank Brilliant Classics for posting all this great works. It is quite generous, even if its also a necessity for promotion nowadays. Thanks alot
You are both thankful and kind. The world needs more of people like you.

It is a treasure!
Thanks! These CDs by Musica Amphion are one of the best Corelli recordings (if not the best)
One word: WOW!
These pieces are so elegant and interesting. I love the organ continuo. It seems to bring out the harmonies more clearly than a harpsichord.
Agree!
Agree. And imagine playing harmonica riffs to this in a in concert hall.
Certainly an organ in the continuo works well for Opus 6 Nos 1-8 which are all concerti da chiesa; Nos 9-12 are concerti da camera and probably suit the harpsichord better.
Chiesa = church: there are no titled dance movements.
Camera = chamber: they are all dance movements.
You really are amazing Brilliant Classics: the complete existing compositions of Corelli, my favorite Barock composer performed by a fine period-instrument ensemble. It doesn't get better than this! Thank you as always.

Люблю(I like) барочную(barroque's) музыку(music), yeah.
Per earlier comment: ¡Dulce, hipnótico! Not just this superb performance of Corelli sonatas, there is beginning to be (for myself) something hypnotic about the way in which BC's presentations not only transport my ear & soul into a calm state, but totally transcend any of my personal "rankings" of favorite composers & performers. Seriously - like anyone, I preferred certain ones over others, without disparagement to "others." Now? Perhaps hypnotically, it seems there are no BC offerings that don't make me value all that I hear (one could add, "see," also - for the thoughtful accompanying images - this is, after all, our new partly-visual art form). My dear Madre would remind me that real (REAL, she would emphasize firmly) is a gift, & rare. Thanks to all.

I thought I had found the master in Bach, but perhaps the grandmaster is Corelli.
Corelli is known as "The Grandmaster of the Grand Concerto".
@@CopShowGuy he must be very grand then

Corelli’s Opus 6 Concerti Grossi are arguably the greatest set of Baroque string concertos of this type ever written; the only others of a similar standard are Handel’s Opus 6 set which are modelled on the Corelli set.
Corelli’s Opus 6 is magnificent, beautiful, and inspired music from the first note until the last; you’re right, you have found something very special, but quintessentially Italian, rather than German.
Note: Corelli’s twelve violin sonatas Opus 5 are arguably the greatest set of violin sonatas ever composed.

I don't know who is responsible for placing the ads in this otherwise wonderful video but why right in the middle of the music.? I mean it is bad enough we have to deal with ads at all, but could you not ,at least wait for the conclusion of a piece before placing an ad? NO, I cannot buy adblock, it is not my computer.
FABULOSO!!! SOLO QUE UN POCO CONFUNDIDO POR CONTENIDO ENTRE VOL 1 Y VOL 2. CREO QUE CONVIENE ACLARAR TIEMPO Y CONTENIDO.
Who are the performers? The description has "...these performances from a welcome and uniform perspective by a leading Dutch period-instrument ensemble." Are you not obliged to say? This is gorgeous music, played expertly, skillfully, and authentically: please credit the performers. It's basic decency!
