Pattaya is a resort located on the Eastern Seaboard of a 'massive Industrial Estate' here in Thailand. You need to get away from these types of tourist traps to see real Thailand and REAL THAI people! Don't base your impressions on anything like what you see and find in Pattaya!

A key to happiness is being able to be on your own without feeling like you have to interact with others. Being able to ignore the phone. Being able to entertain yourself, not feeling guilty about saying no to others, not feeling like you owe an explanation to anyone.
Also, accept and manage boredom. It doesn't always have to be that you are occupied with something. Just accept the fact that boredom exists, just like depression exists. Those that accept this as a natural part of life are a step ahead of the game, and will find much less stress and disappointment in their lives.

    Trevor,
Set yourself a decent routine, I walk Jomtien and Dongtan beaches twice a day 5am and 5pm, a full english twice a week at Nicky's in soi bukow (99b) a couple of specials at cheap charlies using reward card (99b) in the week otherwise its all thai food. A couple of massages per week, a swim either in the pool or sea every day. Just a few drinks per day, I have netflix and you tube for entertainment. A woman once a week or more depending on your tastes. If it's too hot wander around the shopping malls Terminal 21, central festival etc for an hour or two, visit the markets.

I stayed for a month during August & September 2022, and for someone who generally doesn't drink at all here in the UK, I found crawling the bars every night (..and drinking) took its toll on me. In the thirty days I was in Pattaya I missed only two days pub-crawling (..having caught a bug of some sort), and I never returned to my apartment before 1.30am in the morning. The black circles I developed beneath my eyes whilst I was there attested to my new 'burning-the-candle-at-both-ends' lifestyle. However, I'll be back there for two months in March/April 2023, and I'll probably do the same despite vowing to take it easier. It's the FOMO effect (..fear of missing out) that drags you out night after night. Sitting on your balcony overlooking LK Metro and watching as it comes to life each evening makes it hard to stay in your apartment, especially if you've lived for years in relative seclusion. As they say: You only live once, and you'd do better to burn out than to fade away.

I don’t know about you but I can’t drink like I could when I was first coming to Pattaya in the 1990s , so I tend to start off on the soft drinks, then have a few beers towards the end of the night.
I shall be there myself for a month April into May but I’m only gonna be in Pattaya for about a week to 10 days as I’m going to hire a car and get out and see the country.

@@marcusmooney2539 Hi Marcus. That was my first time in Thailand and I was there on my own, so it was good to be welcomed the way I was - and I quite enjoyed being plagued by texts on an evening by girls I'd met asking me to call again at their bar (..although I'm not naive to their crafty ways). As to starting each night on soft drinks..? Hmm. No! The reverse was the case really. I had bottles of spirit atop the refrigerator in my apartment, and always took a wee dram (..or two) in order to be 'in the mood to dance' before even setting foot on the Soi outside. As I said earlier - this took its toll & left me feeling a tad burnt-out by the time I boarded the plane to come home. I've recovered now though, so I'm well up for round two in March. Let the battle commence!

I have a nice condo at Cosy beach with amazing views and good breeze.. Very relaxing..
I'm very fortunate that I'm not addicted to booze, I stick to 5 nights per month.
I like swimming at Dongtan beach. Like watching utube or reading books. I used to walk a lot for exercise. Know quite a few ladies for casual friendships. I have very ample funds, so have no restrictions.. After 7 years here, I never get bored.

Yeah, it's all about mindset and what you want out of life. I bought a place here and like the idea of having Sin City on my doorstep. However, I don't indulge in that lifestyle on a regular basis as ultimately, it will destroy you physically and mentally.
Pattaya has amazing restaurants, great gyms, clean beaches and beautiful women outside of the bar scene. Fast internet everywhere, great shopping, massage places ect.

You’ve hit it spot on with the question of how to fight boredom and resist the nightly bar temptation. I had watched a video of yours before I arrived broaching the subject and I tried to listen as much as I could lol. Found myself down on Bangla quite frequently however. I would read some days to combat it or try and keep busy having my girl drive me around to different beaches and such which helped. Cause when I would sit in the house most of the day I would want to go to Bangla. About a month straight of my 8 I spent. I look to do a better job with it this time around in March. We’ll see how it goes.

Great topic Trev!! On previous trips to Pattaya, if I was only there for 2 weeks, I used to feel pressure to go out every night and 'make it worth it'. On my last trip, I stayed for a month and found that I enjoyed things much more because I didn't feel like I had to stay out til 3am and some nights just enjoyed a sunset and a nice meal and went to bed. On the 2 week trips, I was almost glad to get on the plane and get home to get some rest. This last time, I was seriously depressed because I didn't want to go back. Next trip, I'm staying 6 weeks to see if I can really enjoy the daily life in Jomtien/Pattaya.

I go to gym Monday Tue Thursday Friday. Wednesday is always an activity day to a location outside Bangkok. Saturday is the day we relax and have a drink and a bbq dinner. Sunday we only have one meal and that's a good lunch . But it's also the day we get a massage and walk to a new place and discover a great food experience. Like I said we are all different but getting on the Piss 7 days a week will lead to a lost lifestyle and severe mental health problems.

Drinking is what you do in Patts but when I lived there for 5 years I found that I had spells of going heavy on it but if you manage to find a good girl and (it can be done) then you can just cruise along nicely as you would anywhere.

Fighting boredom and remaining active is the challenge for all of us in retirement. Bad diet and alcohol is a quick path to the grave and we all know it. Each one of us has to fight the fight alone. That beer is cold and the pizza is delicious, but you know what it will do. You know you should say no. But the fun and the girls are at the bar. Maybe they ought to open a gym with "Gym Girls". You could work out, get a massage and a happy ending all in one spot. Then stop at the market and buy something healthy for dinner. After dinner sit on your balcony and smoke a doobie.
As far as you getting fat. It's the carbohydrates mate. So much rice. It turns into pure sugar after you eat it. I suggest a simple diet of a piece of meat and a green vegetable and learn to cook.

I certainly got a bit lost like that for a while, not in Thailand, in Egypt .I'd lived and worked there for a few years and the work dried up, plus i had a bad split with my girlfriend. So I did the saddo thing and with time and money available i just kept going to the bars, daily. Luckily I just don't have that ' alcoholic ' gene,so after about 6 months or so of living in a drunken blur, I just pulled myself together and sorted myself out. Not pleasant, and easy trap to fall into and sadly some don't get out of it. In the right enviroment i can still certainly enjoy a drink, but on a day to day basis i just cant be arsed to be honest, there's plenty more to do

Fulfillment is a side effect not usually achieved directly. Alcohol is a depressant. Best to keep both these truths up front with any foreign travel. Good point Trevor on physical activity. I would add seek out a meditation class or group (pretty easy anywhere in Thailand ; Tai Chi another good option). Also engage your interests outside the bar companion arena: sports, chess, reading, whatever -- work at finding connections in Pattaya for your non-erotic proclivities. I'm not certain but maybe there are opportunities for volunteer service (nature preserves, tutoring etc) in the area; worth the research as this is usually always uplifting. Ideally one would do some intensive net research on these things before arrival in Pattaya (or anywhere in Thailand). And remember that discontent, such as boredom, is always internal, not external. For what its worth -- others may think differently.

I would love to live in Pattaya. The weather is always warm. You can go for a walk at any time of the day or night. The people are friendly and you dont have to worry about getting robbed or worse. The beach is always open. You have great healthcare that's affordable. I'm not a big drinker but you can always find a place to go. Same with females. If you want some company, it's always available. I am a morning person so I would like to find a place to workout or play some racquet sports. Great golf courses are available. Rainy season may be the only downside.

Just because when I get into a bar, I needed to order something, and a Tiger will be an easy choice, and I would sip while talking to a girl. I never actually finished a beer, and even this put 2.5 kg on me. The number of bars I walked in every day 😂

Great subject pal, and bang on the money. If you fall into the daily drinking routine when you move here it is only gonna end up with you in an early grave. I’d advise anyone who moves to to buy/rent a house with a garden out of town, over on the dark side for instance, I personally could not live in a condo I would go stir crazy in one of those things. If you’re out of town you can avoid the madness. Cook at home instead of eating out all the time. If you want a partner to live with try and meet a girl who is already working and earns a wage, shop assistant, bank clerk, nurse, etc, that way you are not constantly in each others space 24/7. Join a gym and get your arse there for an hr a day, it ain’t fucking hard, even if you just walk 4km a day on the treadmill it will keep you fit. Get a dog and take it for a long walk every day, plenty of beaches and places to go with them. If you can get a part time job somewhere go for it, I know that is easier said than done but they are out there. If you have a particular skill/trade keep your hand in, there are plenty of rich expats here who would be willing to pay for a british Plumber, Tiler, decorator etc, you can dictate what hours you do and bank a few quid as well. Help out at a charity a few days a month. First time I’ve seen a blog covering this subject, kudos to you Trevor for bringing it up 👍👍

Love your honesty. It’s true. You can get bored. Will get bored. Not every day is going to be thrilling. This happened to me in Manila. While I lived there. I would just go for a walk. Maybe grab one beer. Just one during the day. Put a limit on it. Just one beer. It’s important to go outside though. Yes, lots of temptations in Southeast Asia. Women and alcohol. Easy to get. You said it though, find something to keep your mind going too. Even for a few hours each day. Have to. Or you go crazy. I think people with kids will be always busy. Just the way it is. No place is perfect. None.

Just observe daily life in the Western world, lot of people can't entertain themselves. They are always looking for ways to fill their time, going out, drinking, eating, no normal conversation (too loud music, so we shout in each others ears), etc. It's a fundamental problem, you can't drown your emptiness it will always haunt you. Try budhism to understand yourself. It's a starter 😉

It’s a good topic Trev. When I go to Pattaya I don’t drink during the day. I get out of bed, go eat, go walk around the shopping centres, go for a short time down Soi 6, eat again and back to the hotel for a swim.
About 6pm I’ll head out for dinner then hit the bars.
I’ll also hit the gym once a week.
Plenty to do in Pattaya, but you have to be motivated and disciplined to keep the weight off.

If you live there its essential to build some kind of daily plan to have a life away from the bars. Nobody can do as they did while on holiday there. Easy said, I know, but when I spent longer times time there I made sure I did things, hobbies, go to the gym, anything really....same as you would back in the West etc. Its harder there in Pattaya of course, temptation is in your face.

According to Bangkok Post , 500000 baht alcohol consumption per day in Pattaya . Let't think dat 4/5 of that is for beer , so 400000 , and let's say at 70 b per unit makes it 5000/6000 consumptions.
I stay now for 3 months in Pratamnak and spend maybe 3 half days a week in Pattaya ....I have no need to be constantly in bars . Keep myself busy on pc , tv , walks and try to keep a momentum of 1 day doin' nothin' and 1 day doin' something and scedule it ...f.i. go to temple , go to Cozy beach , go to Naklua fishmarket , go to Heaven Above , go to that perticular restaurant . Breakfasts I just do in my condo , can do it myself and better and if I would live here permanently I would cook myself a few times a week which would also take the costs down with 2/3rd against any resto.
Personally I just do fine here . That said , if I would stay here permanently I would have the need of a car in order to be able to visit all parts of Thailand for exploring & my photography hobby, and I think that a lot of expats here don't have a car , just a motorbike.
And maybe I would not even stay in Pattaya , but rather choose Prachuap Khiri Khan or Khao Lak area.
