I love how a lot of older equipment has ornamentation that serves no other purpose than to look beautiful. I would love to see a return to that type of concern for aesthetics in equipment and buildings.
I was an instrument tech for many years at nuclear plants during startup. Bailey and Foxboro were names you saw all over the place. Bailey Instruments was one of the few manufacturers of mechanical pressure sensor gauges and controls certified for nuclear plants. It was a real pain adjusting the mechanical linkages they used.
that generator is being run as a synchronous condenser for the grid. used to increase power factor in the system, the generator is separated from the steam turbine blading and only ran for this purpose. the noise you hear is the generator spinning, there will also be an DC exciter running for sync purposes. generators are spun up on a pony motor until proper wattage is achieved and then the generator is tied into the power grid system, the excitor voltage (DC) is increased or decreased depending on system voltage to achieve steady current and correct leading/lagging within it. due to this turbine not being steam operated, law does not require 24/7 oversight of the sync, therefore periods on non supervision will be common. there will be no steam as you stated as the boilers are not running, any auxiliary boilers would have to monitored 24/7 if they operator at certain pressures.

I spent over a decade at a facility on the Texas gulf coast that was built in the 40s . Many of the units that were built at UCC TX City were built to a similar standard. For me it’s quite entertaining to see this thru y’all’s eyes knowing only a fraction of the things y’all are looking at , as I tell you thru the video what they do . When that equipment was running it was glorious!
Steam plants are pretty amazing, from the physical processes being carried out, to the scale of the equipment. It's a simple process at the surface level (I mean it's just boiling water right) but once you get into the heat balance with all the turbine extractions, feedwater heaters, etc it's amazing to think there's people out there that are smart enough to engineer the plant in the first place. It's also pretty abstract as there's not any point that you can see what's going on. You can't see steam bubbles breaking through the water in the drum, and even if you could somehow get a view inside a steam line you wouldn't even be able to see the steam considering it's a gas which is pretty hard to wrap your head around. You've just got to trust that there's a very respectable amount of energy in those pipes lol.
This may be your best video yet. To get to see a version of the power plant still functional, then to see another version with decades of neglect was amazing. And then to top it off with a near capture. Highly enjoyable 30 minutes!
It's unfortunate that Bryan got sick and didn't get to see more of the first plant. That was one hell of an escape. Nice job as always, guys, and Ryan as well.

I’m jealous, I been by that plant many times over the years. I always wanted to look inside. I worked for the paper company in the 1970’s. The rayon plant was called Beaunit. I didn’t see the water fountain by the offices. Wonder if it’s still there? Years ago the pump house that supplied water for the power plant (across the road) still stood. It was good architecture as well. Before the Beaunit warehouse and manufacturing facility was torn down, it was a sprawling installation. Thanks for the look inside!

That ending was something else, wow! Also, holy asbestos, the entire building was filled with crumbling and frayed pipe lagging. I can't believe they actually sent a worker in after you, that whole place is an OSHA minefield for whoever owns the place, not to mention having dogs run around in all the toxic crap. There’s a good chance the first plant, had one of the generators running as a synchronous generator, pushing VARS, as needed by the system. Back in the day, the modern plant had 3 major operating stations. You found one of them. They where B Boiler, T Turbine, G generator. The advent of more automated consolidated those to a Control Room so a smaller team could control the plant. It was still pneumatic control. Next evolution was to replace the pneumatic black boxes and operator interface with electronic but still not much programmable automation. I upgraded many power plants over a 30 year time for a utility.
What an amazing feat for back in the day how these power plants were built. Mind boggling the amount of man hours put in to building these. Cool video.

@@santaclause2875 How correct you are. I worked in a rail rolling mill I am retired now. The old roll housings were very old. I remember a guy fresh out of college trying to tell me how to adjust the rolls up or down. He said drop or raise it so many flats well the gears were very old and i had to adjust them by feel not flats he could not understand what i meant.

Love this channel, especially when y’all hit power plants. As a design engineer who makes industrial switch/control panels I always love seeing how the standards for switchgear has changed yet still remains the same compared to modern layouts.
Super video! In the future, industrial historians will be so pleased that urban explorers filmed such a diverse range of buildings, factories and utilities, in some cases almost accidentally keeping visual records of how things were done in the past. The engineering and planning that went into massive old plants like these, packed almost solid with all the pipes, wiring and hardware, never ceases to amaze me. How on Earth did draughtsmen design such places before the advent of computers and 3D CAD programs? Did they design the positions of every pipe like they do now. It seems almost impossible. Even just giving a quotation for building such a place must’ve been an absolute nightmare.
The programming for CAD had to come from somewhere. It's amazing how the first Nuke plants were built too as well as the SR71 and such. Slide rules and lots of thought!
And yes. That is 100% asbestos insulation. It was a standard back in the day with industrial insulation. I still come across it in my line of work. It's just marked now or covered in mastic.

This is a fantastic video! There are all kinds of industrial facilities scattered across the state of Georgia related to wood harvesting and processing. Documenting this old power plant is of significant historical value. So many of these places are far off the beaten path hidden from view and not open to the public. I really appreciate your non destructive trespassing filming methodology as it relates to accessing these facilities and sharing them with the world!
When the guard chase starts is where the pressure kicks in to get your a** out of there, like a video game chase sequence. Overall, the contrast of the buildings was insane. The first one was very loud with all the active machinery and clean for the most part and the second one was dirtier and nastier. Great footage as usual!

I worked in an old asbestos filled power plant for 38 years, you guys have been through so many of them now that you recognize systems and equipment, like the coal feed to the Boilers. It's as if you've been training to work at them while doing your investigations. Great escape also, I would probably have froze and crapped myself.
I got to wander through an ancient yet fully working 4 turbine gas fired 1 GW power plant (I worked for a subcontractor doing outside work but nicely asked). They gave me safety gear (vest, hard hat, ear protection, goggles) and told me to not touch ANYTHING or even approach open power circuits. The entire place was made of welded pipelines and the valve handles were all ornate with decorative curves. The entire piping system looked like it was made by artists. The place was really cool. I did take some photos but the camera wasn't great. Some building had equipment "rusting in place" as they described it. Everything was there as the plant was operational and had their own security personnel plus a serious fence. Nowadays with the various nutcases targeting infrastructure it probably wouldn't be possible but you never know. My exploration was 10 years ago.
I wouldn't have gone into that first one with the turbine or whatever it was still running. You were trespassing on a privately owned and still partially operational industrial facility. The hasty escape at the end though was part of what makes this channel so awesome. It's not just sightseeing. It's high adventure!
All of those artifacts should be auctioned off. There are enough people interested in vintage gear of all kinds who would love to have the remnants of olden days. Reuse and repurpose! Excellent vid. Totally dug this place.

Baby turbines, burners, boilers, etc, compared to the plant I usually work at, which is unfortunately scheduled to close down in a few months, unless someone buys it. Very interesting! Pipes are out side a boiler, anything outside going in or inside a boiler is a tube. Pipe Fitters service the outside connections Boiler Makers do every thing connecting to and inside the boiler. 6:39
Given the recent context of people damaging power/transfomer/etc. stations, I'm sure who ever spotted you was pretty unnerved. Someone probably spotted you in the distance a while earlier, and it took time for them to arrive. Glad you guys are safe though, and I'm glad Bryan was able to rejoin. If some dummy injures themselves exploring an abandoned place, then there's a risk that the owner of the property gets sued (it's happened in the past with other abandoned spaces). Better to nip it in the bud with threats of fines or arrest than allow people to freely explore these places and leave the owner liable if something happens to one of them. This is America after all, where even burglars can sue property owners.
I used to operate a plant with a similar layout to this. Our boilers were much older from the 1940’s. These look like they are of a 1970’s design and were retrofitted into the building.

I presume they were only running air compressors in the working power plant to sustain other equipment nearby, just using it as an air house, I doubt they were actually running the generators, nice to see an active site now and then :) nice escape!!
There are ancient power plants in downtown KC, MO. which sent excess steam to all the high rise office buildings for heat. I don't think they generate electricity but still supply heat.
I have been a marine engineer for over fifty years. This was part of my life working in places like this,in the bottom of ships. Asbestos was used for insulation as well. We used to paint it to contain the fibers. Thank you for sharing this. It has certainly brought back a lot of memories. I have only worked on one ship that was coal fired all the others were oil fired.
At 11:00 y’all were in the instrument shop. That’s where the I/E techs would calibrate the instruments from the process. The big gauge on the wall is a “Wally Box” typically for pneumatic instrument calibration or to work on pneumatic controllers or control valves.

7:48 manways into what would conventionally be called the penthouse of the boiler. The vessel access ports are for the header/steam drum where the water is completely separated from the steam, which then makes it way to turbine deck.

I wouldn't have gone into that first one with the turbine or whatever it was still running. You were trespassing on a privately owned and still partially operational industrial facility. The hasty escape at the end though was part of what makes this channel so awesome. It's not just sightseeing. It's high adventure!

Pipes are out side a boiler, anything outside going in or inside a boiler is a tube. Pipe Fitters service the outside connections Boiler Makers do every thing connecting to and inside the boiler. 6:39

The generator being on helps give a sense of how noises those plants where when they were in operation. Even the other ones that you guys explored.
Given the recent context of people damaging power/transfomer/etc. stations, I'm sure who ever spotted you was pretty unnerved. Someone probably spotted you in the distance a while earlier, and it took time for them to arrive. Glad you guys are safe though, and I'm glad Bryan was able to rejoin. @@brodriguez11000 It's more of a liability thing. If some dummy injures themselves exploring an abandoned place, then there's a risk that the owner of the property gets sued (it's happened in the past with other abandoned spaces). Better to nip it in the bud with threats of fines or arrest than allow people to freely explore these places and leave the owner liable if something happens to one of them.
This is America after all, where even burglars can sue property owners.
I used to operate a plant with a similar layout to this. Our boilers were much older from the 1940’s. These look like they are of a 1970’s design and were retrofitted into the building.
Watching this is bitter sweet. I love seeing old infrastructure and design, but seeing it go to waste is heartbreaking.

I presume they were only running air compressors in the working power plant to sustain other equipment nearby, just using it as an air house, I doubt they were actually running the generators, nice to see an active site now and then :) nice escape!!
I agree. Sounded like a big roots style compressor.
There are ancient power plants in downtown KC, MO. which sent excess steam to all the high rise office buildings for heat. I don't think they generate electricity but still supply heat.

That first power house had its boilers shut down, and was using excess steam from their new plant to run the turbines in the old power house.
I have been a marine engineer for over fifty years. This was part of my life working in places like this,in the bottom of ships. Asbestos was used for insulation as well. We used to paint it to contain the fibers. Thank you for sharing this. It has certainly brought back a lot of memories. I have only worked on one ship that was coal fired all the others were oil fired.
A narrow but successful escape is a rare and exciting treat.
At 11:00 y’all were in the instrument shop. That’s where the I/E techs would calibrate the instruments from the process. The big gauge on the wall is a “Wally Box” typically for pneumatic instrument calibration or to work on pneumatic controllers or control valves.

7:48 manways into what would conventionally be called the penthouse of the boiler. The vessel access ports are for the header/steam drum where the water is completely separated from the steam, which then makes it way to turbine deck.
