Danno, store flyers are decided and printed according to cycles, almost 6 months in advance. So, NO, Meier isn't holding onto their can goods due to looming port strike. And canned goods will be being shipped to NC, FL, TN for the foreseeable future.
That potato and onion sale is the type to stock up on then store for longevity; even if it means an afternoon of dicing in tears then freezing. Consider using a food processor or blender to make quick work of a bunch of onions into fine dices or puree then portioning into reusable snack sized baggies. Freeze the baggies on a cookie sheet then load into a bigger resealable baggie to contain both the smaller portions and also the onion smell.
I often chop and freeze my onions and place into quart size freezer bags as well 😊 I like to saute them up frozen to avoid using any oil for carmelizing. Just keep adding a bit more water.
When it comes to produce going up, a lot of the products that are rising in price are going out of season. Look up what is in season in your region and try to buy that. It’s ridiculous to think fresh berries are going to be cheap in late September/Early October. Try buying frozen berries.
I hate when stores make you buy two (or more) items to get the sale price. The nice thing about Food Lion is that you can buy one item and still get the sale price. If Food Lion has something buy one get one free and you only get one they let you have it for half price.
I liked Food Lion when I lived in Charlotte, NC. Friendly staff, and good prices on most items. Don't have Food Lion out West here, but we do have Safeway and Kroger which both have great sales at least 2x per month on items I buy.
I don’t like it for the reason that I don’t have a car, and often am going to a store on a train or walking. So I don’t want to carry 2 cases of soda, or 2 big packs of water, or 2 gallons of milk or whatever, it’s heavy and cumbersome.
Gravy is so easy to make. Would never pay $2.50 for it when it can be made with a little milk, flour, and pan dripping from cooking meat. Chirizo is on sale this week and we have never had it. It is cheaper than the storemade sausage so it will be a new item and recipes to try with that. Onions are on sale so that will be frozen. Thankful for what we do have.
@@brg2743 Chorizo is upto highly (like hot!) spiced, very fatty pork sausage; maybe it just melts off easier. Typical of foods from areas where both protien and fat are costly or hard to come by, many of the chirizo based dishes incorporate both; the fat its self is very flavorful. Consider retaining and saving all the fat then utilizing it. Add a bit to unflavored refried beans and incorporate it well. Substitute some of the fat in say cornbread. Use a kiss of it to provide a skim coat on kernel corn (maybe with some paprika or a scattering of black beans) or even green beans. Definitely use it in polenta. The list goes on.
@@brg2743 Ditto on the gravy. If you use the gravy packets, even those can be made cheaper with cornstarch and bullion; save every small condiment jar that passes your way and let everyone you know that you would love thier small glass jars.
I found no good deals at Meijer this week. Another local MI store is Family Fare. Last week they had Chuck Roast for 3.99/lb. This week they have Pork shoulder 99 cents/lb. love shopping all ads for best deals of the week. Thanks Danno
Weird experince in Gilbert Az yesterday at a higher end grocery store called Aj's Fine Foods. It was between 545pm and 6. We were looking to grab a dinner deal (sandwich and salad) at thier deli counter. Half the salad varieties available. Most of the case empty. (Store.closes at 9pm). All the salads look like they were made on wensday- and non of them green. Lots of pasta salad, bean salads, et. None of the green/fruit/low carb. None of the 6 employees there wanted to talk to us. So we left and wandered through the produce section just to look. I have never seen thier displays/cold cases so decimated. Eerie but not worried.
I take a look at the Frys and Safeway deli counters almost every week. Most of the premade salads and beans look rather stale in the deli cases, so the price must be too high for most folks. I know I won't pay $5 per pound for macaroni or potatoe salad. It appears that some items do not move as fast as they once did.
Do consider substituting ham for bacon. The last time i sorta, kinda looked at the price of ham, Walmart seemed to have the best price per pound in town; they were smaller hams though which is fine if using ham as a bacon substitute. Finely dice, ultra finely dice, or shred in a food processor/ blender to stretch it out.
Pacific was a small cannery many moons ago, continued to grow and semi-move into a higher niche, and was purchased by Campbell's in 2017. Ive increasingly seen advertisements for Pacific on and off since late spring , early summer ('24). It seems as if Campbell's is working on increasing its market share.
I cant help but think that Helene is going to affect purchasing decisions, production and supply chains, and distribution. Even more so where Helene visited and the roads items routinely traveled. This should affect your Cincinnati area.
As a 1993-1996 Meijer 3rd shift grocery alumnus the expired sale tags still on shelf irks me because that’s a double fail on shift workers and management. Never would have happened on my crew. I got burned out on Michigan Cherry as I used to buy it all the time too. Meijer flavored ground coffee is far better than Starbucks in my opinion.
"Thinking too hard"?I don't think so. When I went looking into WHY there were shortages during the big P, I was shocked. There is a war on food, and the billionaire companies are in the know. We have to consider the possibilities of many previously unthinkable things, since so many conspiracies that people had theories about are here in reality.
I 'm sure the stores are aware of the shipping issues that were going to happen. Yesterday the frozen blueberries and a box of shortcake frozen bars were the only items we received from an order out of the 44 items I placed in my order, for Kroger to do this is really unheard of so today because we needed these items I placed another order using my computer under 37 dollars worth and we will see what happens in the morning if I get the order .Thanks Danno for all the garbage you put up with .
Containers in the ports where we get products maybe going on strike and most products you could get in stores or not. 45 thousand golf dockworkers will walk of there jobs if they don't get more money. That means produce, it could cost 5 Billon dollars a day products like iron/ steel, chemicals, medical equipments, furniture, vehicles, machinery, electric machinery, produce? Stock up soon important items at home.
Meijer parking lots are always full. It has to be because they are a department store plus groceries. Even with mperks, their food prices are high. Yes high. Their sale items are like àll the others, but if not a sale, I find my hudget does not match.
What really irritates me is that these grocery stores will jack up the prices on produce so high and when people don't buy them because they cannot afford them, they will let them rot. Something has to change with this lunacy!! Sorry, just frustrated.
Went to meijer on a saturday around 7 pm and they started taking the sale prices down when i was shopping making it impossible to figure out what was on sale that last day i will never shop on a saturday again this happened to me a few times :(
Food prices are way out of control! The printed ad in store for Meijer is only about 1/4 of the sale. You have to go on line to see the whole ad. Its a stupid practice if you ask me, but it must save the company a couple of pennies. People without internet miss out on seeing the whole ad.
The dockworkers are ready to strike, and probably for good reasons. That is hard work and billionaire shipping magnates are getting richer off of other people's backs.

Take responsibility people. It isn't that complicated to read whatever sign is attached to the shelf to verify if the sale price is still in effect for the week. People do understand that a CEO or the management staff do not that walk the aisles giving directions to: "Leave that old sale tag there". It's normal everyday employees with no ulterior motive to intentionally leave an expired sale tag just to "screw over the consumer".
