  • In the Que: Celebrating the Que Club is a film about one of the great live and rave and dance venues in the United Kingdom.
Built as the Methodist Central Hall and opened in 1903, this Grade II * building would become home to a different type of congregation.
The building was bought in 1992 by Billy Gaff, former manager of Cream, The Faces and Rod Stewart, who also owned the Marquee Club in London (he used the q, u & e from Marquee for the name), who wanted to turn it into a live music venue. It quickly became the centre for Rave and Dance music in Birmingham though, something in part to do with the incredible building's layout and space.
With an imposing central hall, complete with a huge organ, and steep, terrifying balconies that would shake as clubbers danced on them, the Methodist Central Hall also had some 30+ rooms and miles of corridors and roof space in which to lose yourself listening to other DJs or just meeting other clubbers. It was unique in being able to have 2000 clubbers raving to Techno in the main hall whilst 100 people might be listening to Drum n Bass in a side room, 50 listening to Jungle in another and others listening to Garage, Basement or Breakbeat.
Whilst globally recognised bands and musicians such David Bowie, Massive Attack, Blur, Pulp, Wu Tang Clan, Tricky, PJ Harvey, Run DMC and scores of others performed on the legendary stage - Daft Punk loved the venue so much they used their live set for the Alive 1997 album - it was to be the rave and dance nights that cemented the venue as one of the best venues in the UK.
Home to House of God, Atomic Jam, Third Eye, Silver Slipper, Flashback, Spacehopper, The Bubble Club, Ultimate Orange, Oscilate, Zuba Zuba, Harmony, venue for BBC Essential Mix, host to Carl Cox, Joey Beltram, Grooverider, LTJ Bukem, Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills and many many others The Que Club was a club like no other.
Weaving rare archive footage with interviews with some of the DJ's, Promoters, Clubbers and staff who worked there, the film will take you inside one of the most important venues for rave and club culture in Europe.

Age 17, December 96, Dave Angel, Atomic Jam, changed my life forever, didn’t stop going to the Jam until 2012. Thank you for everything. Jeff Mills, Carl Cox, DJ Rush, Richie Hawtin, The Advent, James Ruskin, Dave Clarke, Speedy J, CJ Bolland, Steve Bicknell, impossible to describe or express the passion and love I felt for these nights, no phone or images, just ticket stubbs and stories. In my heart and in my head forever, unforgettable.

I too, was one of those lucky people who got to party at the Que Club. I only went 4 or 5 times circa late 95, 96 - 97 I also got along to 2 days of the Castle Morton Gathering!!! BUT those nights were both life affirming and life changing. I don't know who was playing, I don't know the names of the nights BUT I do know they were some of the most amazing club nights I had ever experienced. The venue, the music, the people The Que all the stars and planets were aligned for a perfect moment in dance music when Techno and Rave came in from the cold. Thank you to all those involved in creating this awesome tribute and to all of the contributors. Techno and Rave took me on the path to Trance which has taken me to so many amazing nights, venues, gigs and DJ's creating awesome experiences around the world. Many have been incredible but only a few have matched the excitement and energy of the Que Club. So grateful to have been on this musical journey for the past 30 years.

Watching perplexed as orange and blue nuns ran past (yes they did) me making memememememme sounds in the corridor. People from all corners of wherever people setlle. You were my friends. Atomic Jam,14th Oct 2000. Luke Slater, Ben Sims, DJ Hell and others.... Was a night out for my 20th bday.. Absolutely awesome!! I went to London to pick up mates from the rave crew, then up to Brum for the night.... Outstanding... First time I went to the Que was for the Gatecrasher birthday party in September 1999. Came up the stairs having no idea where we were going and walked through what looked like your typical living room door into the main room. I was absolutely blown away with what was going on and something I’ll remember for the rest of my days. Folk going bonkers at the seats that went right up the back to the gods. Looked like a football terrace behind the goals.
One night I wish I had gone to was the legendary Essential Mix in 1995 with Oakenfold, Sasha and Rampling.

When the club finally reopened after the 'refurbishment', we excitedly walked round the whole place looking for the improvements. Couldn't see any difference until we eventually, mid-rave, went to the 'tea room' and found that the clogged up bowl of sugar had been replaced by sachets. What a difference that made to the 3am cup of tea experience, I can tell you.

Had some mental nights here. Techno to start with, then Sundissential. Proper carnival atmosphere. Sitting in those high up seats looking down on the ‘congregation’ or getting lost in the corridors. Absolutely mangled it has to be said. Birmingham had so many great clubs mid to late 90’s. Tin Tins will always be the pinnacle for me but the Que was bonkers.

I was there at least one night most weekend during my time at UCE (what is now Birmingham City Uni) between 95 and 98. If you remember some skinny lad with a metal canteen for water instead of a plastic bottle like a normal person that was me.
Ultimate Orange, Spacehopper, House of God, Oscilate, Atomic Jam, Bubble Club among others were great and I'm happy to say that I'm on at least one of joolsfx's videos posted here on TH-cam - highlight of my time there was collaring Daft Punk after the concert that was later released for the "Alive 97" album as they came off stage and getting the cassette sleeve of their first album signed :)
For me who didn't take any sort of drugs it was an endurance test as much as a great night out because as mentioned there was nothing else open late so you had to be there all night as the buses didnt start until 6. But there was a canteen in one of the rooms of to the right hand side of the main room (if you were facing the stage) where you could get a cuppa and a freshly cooked burder to keep you going. And then I got my reward for going the distance by queuing up at the McDonalds on the ramp up to the Pallisades shopping centre to eat most of the breakfast menu before getting the bus back to student digs.

Probably my favorite venue in Birmingham in the 1990s. Went to many gigs and rave-type nights there. I just remember it being a bit of a warren and an adventure walking around. I remember one night I was out of it and found myself in a long black corridor. I said to my friend I'm going to run down there fast. No idea where it went but would just run down their blind. It turned out to be a wall painted black and I knocked myself out. LOL. Lots of memories there but one stuck when were in there the night Princess Diana died in 1997. We were there to see Roni Size. We left the venue late and got in cab right outside. Once in the cab flew around the bend at the end of the road - far too fast - and hit a girl who'd left the venue and she hit the windscreen and flew over the top of the cab. It was really horrendous. Luckily most nights at the Que Club were not like that. Off to the top of my head, some of the gigs I went to there were Pulp, Underworld, Orb, Tricky, The Chemical Brothers, Bentley Rhyhum Ace, Massive Attack, Gary Numan, Daft Punk (at the Alive 97 recording), Blur, Space and many more.

Loved it in there but one night back in 1994 I had just a little bit to much speed , which sent me on a massive parra trip . I was walking around the place trying to hide from all the black gezzers thinking they were all after me . Quite hard to hide from them as it was a Quest jungle night 😂

Great documentary. Took me right back there. The 1990s feel like a utopian dream looking at it from 2023. Birmingham gets slated all the time but it was an amazing place for raves and people from anywhere , any race coming together. Particularly Atomic Jams at Que club. Miss those times. Living for the weekend was my life.

We used to park right outside the cop shop, just for convenience, we'd get in the car at 7am and the windows were full of coppers noses squashed up against the glass watching as hedonistic clubbers were struggling to find what looked like a car key, bundle friends and bottles of water into the car and drive home (somehow)!!
