Normally when popular shows have gone past it’s prime they move it to 9pm and let it go peacefully. No idea why they didn’t do that here. For a comedy show this sence hits harder than what most we have today. No music, no jokes, just this built up of tenuous encounter of the grown kid and the bastard that left. And man the payoff was brilliant.
As someone with both experiences it is worse being with a toxic parent. My dad never tried to come for me which was hard but seeing my mother every weekend and mentally and emotionally abusing me was more difficult but luckily both of them have been out of my lives for 2 years now

You literally cannot have a good George Lopez moment without his flaws holding his hands with his better qualities. It's a consistent part of his character. They coexist perfectly with his personality, and that's what makes him work. He's a tragic character in a comedy and it works. The jokes speak for themselves, he has parental issues and a shit childhood. But moments like these illustrate how badly he had it. On several occasions, I almost forget George Lopez (the TV persona mind you) is a fictional character. He feels like a real human being. Very few if any other characters give me that vibe.

No matter how bad things get I vow to NEVER leave my family. This man is a coward. Leaving your family instead of staying and sticking it out doesn't strike me as brave. My grandfather left my mother when she was a kid and I grew up watching what that did to her.
Honestly despite Benny being a pain in the ass towards George, him standing up for her shows that he really loves his mom. I remember watching this episode when it originally aired on ABC. I was watching with my parents during dinner it was definitely an emotional episode. I was 13 at the time.
Even though Benny's ways of parenting for George weren't very ideal, it did toughen George up. Now George is able to fend for himself against people as an adult, tolerate Angie's snobby family who always look down on him, and stand his ground when it comes to raising Max and Carmen. Manny may be right about Benny is a little off of her hinges, but Benny was the only parental figure he had in life.

When he was young his father was a blank space he could put all the love his mother never gave him. Now that he's reached this point of his life he's realized that love was never there. His father was a man who left him with a dangerous criminal mom. What sort of a father is that? By comparison she raised him and fed him and gave up her life for him. And he understands now that no matter how bitter he is over how bad she was to him, she the best mother he could hope for in his situation and she killed herself to be it. That counts for something. But damn that's a bleak life.
Seeing stories like this even on shows that are funny always makes me appreciate having two parents that took the time to work things out and gave me and my siblings a good home they weren’t perfect but it makes me appreciate everything they’ve done to keep out family together
George got his closure. He saw the kind of man who could have raised him & he gained a newfound sense of appreciation for his tough mom. George became a wonderful husband & father in spite of his dad.
Not only did he leave a family, but he also started a new one without hesitation. He even named his new son George as if he was replacing him. And when he died, he even banned George from coming to his funeral just to save his reputation. That’s not just wrong but unforgivable. He deserved worst than a kidney disease.
I loved it when shows like this one and Fresh Prince of Bel Air showed episodes that addressed the absent father of the protagonist and how they (both George and Will) stood up to them and felt after their fathers came back in their life for that short time. I related so much to those episodes due to me not growing up with a father figure, they were both great episodes with a powerful scene.
My father turned his back on me and my siblings when I was young and I’m not mad, bitter, or sad I’ll just never give a damn about him like he never did with us !

You have to remember that most people that watched the show was an English speaking audience, so they wouldn't have noticed the word; and I do know that the show is aimed at Hispanics and Latinos but I'm pretty sure most of the viewership was only English speakers.
There was one episode where George said "que la chinga" too. That one really surprised me as we've never heard anyone say the F word on a sitcom...at least as far as I know.
When he confronted his father. It was a powerful yet emotional scene. When he sucker punched him to defend his mother. All I could hear was "mama said knock you out!"
It really says something when this was the most emotional scene in the entire George Lopez series, meanwhile the most emotional scene in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was when Will's father walks out on him. This just goes to show how impactful it can be for a parent to leave.

This show is extremely comedic and I absolutely love it, but when serious scenes happen, hell, they do it RIGHT! That was a powerful scene!

Growing up without a father who has done bad things as well really makes the scene hit harder for me. It makes me wonder what will happen if I ever meet my father again.

Gera WallStar exactly it’s still has 6.1 million viewers . It had not been moved off the 8pm showing. Normally when popular shows have gone past it’s prime they move it to 9pm and let it go peacefully. No idea why they didn’t do that here. One more season with George sending both his kids to college, him becoming owner of the company and growing it where he’d be more wealthy then his dad , Ernie finding love and it end with all them at the house together would be perfect . Hopefully they wouldn’t kill anyone off.

The difference between George and manny is the fact that when the going got tough manny bailed on his family leaving George and benny to struggle but despite all the hardship he had to endure george succeeded in all aspects as a leader, loving father/husband and an all around good person.A person like that cant be bought and George proved that to Manny.
I mean Manny did the right thing by leaving Benny cause like he said they wasn't getting along but he should've still tried to keep in touch wit George while he was still in his youth and not wait till he was a full ass adult

For a comedy show this sence hits harder than what most we have today.
No music, no jokes, just this built up of tenuous encounter of the grown kid and the bastard that left. And man the payoff was brilliant.

As someone with both experiences it is worse being with a toxic parent. My dad never tried to come for me which was hard but seeing my mother every weekend and mentally and emotionally abusing me was more difficult but luckily both of them have been out of my lives for 2 years now
This scene could've been more powerful if George didn't say anything after he punched Manny, and if there wasn't that funny bit at the end. Still a good scene though.

@@nedrostram2360 This is honestly why George is one of my favorite characters in fiction. Period. Underneath all the jokes, his flaws shine alongside his strengths. You literally cannot have a good George Lopez moment without his flaws holding his hands with his better qualities. It's a consistent part of his character. They coexist perfectly with his personality, and that's what makes him work. He's a tragic character in a comedy and it works.
The jokes speak for themselves, he has parental issues and a shit childhood. But moments like these illustrate how badly he had it.
On several occasions, I almost forget George Lopez (the TV persona mind you) is a fictional character. He feels like a real human being. Very few if any other characters give me that vibe.

I watched this on TV and I guess for timing they cut the Max counting/ GO GO part out and went straight to commercial...the scene was indeed way more powerful without it and seeing it here is new to me. but I can see why they would want something lighthearted at the end of their heaviest moment

No matter how bad things get I vow to NEVER leave my family. This man is a coward. Leaving your family instead of staying and sticking it out doesn't strike me as brave. My grandfather left my mother when she was a kid and I grew up watching what that did to her.

Honestly despite Benny being a pain in the ass towards George, him standing up for her shows that he really loves his mom. I can't blame Benny raising him the way she did, try being over worked and raising a child alone. Unlike she threw him out and whatnot. Remember the episode where she got
him the Mickey hat because she couldn't afford to take him to Disneyland as a kid, she just hides her affection. I can relate because my dad left when I was baby. He tries to be around but I don't expect much because of the abandonment I felt growing up.
I remember watching this episode when it originally aired on ABC. I was watching with my parents during dinner it was definitely an emotional episode. I was 13 at the time.

Even though Benny's ways of parenting for George weren't very ideal, it did toughen George up. Now George is able to fend for himself against people as an adult, tolerate Angie's snobby family who always look down on him, and stand his ground when it comes to raising Max and Carmen. Manny may be right about Benny is a little off of her hinges, but Benny was the only parental figure he had in life.
I remembered I didn’t have interest into watching the George Lopez show but then when I was watching the reruns I realized how good this show was because I don’t recall watching an Hispanic comedy sitcom like this one and George Lopez played as one of the best tv dads out there and it inspired his culture on how to make it and survive in life... DOPE SHIT
You know his dad, could've at least kept in contact with George up until he was old enough to understand why he left and lived far away and even come by to pick him up on weekends or holidays; he had the money so i don't see why manny didn't and that's the saddest part.
My dad fought with and left my mom but that never stopped him from coming by and picking us up, If i remember correctly my dad and mom were arguing once about something over the phone i can't remember and my dad come to the front door rather kindly ( although pissed on the inside ) and asked to see me and my sister and we went to his home. When he was young his father was a blank space he could put all the love his mother never gave him. Now that he's reached this point of his life he's realized that love was never there. His father was a man who left him with a dangerous criminal mom. What sort of a father is that? By comparison she raised him and fed him and gave up her life for him. And he understands now that no matter how bitter he is over how bad she was to him, she the best mother he could hope for in his situation and she killed herself to be it. That counts for something. But damn that's a bleak life.
Seeing stories like this even on shows that are funny always makes me appreciate having two parents that took the time to work things out and gave me and my siblings a good home they weren’t perfect but it makes me appreciate everything they’ve done to keep out family together

I think anyone in George's position would have punched their father for abandoning them their whole life and insulting their mother.
Not only did he leave a family, but he also started a new one without hesitation. He even named his new son George as if he was replacing him. And when he died, he even banned George from coming to his funeral just to save his reputation. That’s not just wrong but unforgivable. He deserved worst than a kidney disease.
If I were George, I would have gone to the funeral and tarnished Manny’s reputation.

I loved it when shows like this one and Fresh Prince of Bel Air showed episodes that addressed the absent father of the protagonist and how they (both George and Will) stood up to them and felt after their fathers came back in their life for that short time. I related so much to those episodes due to me not growing up with a father figure, they were both great episodes with a powerful scene.
My father turned his back on me and my siblings when I was young and I’m not mad, bitter, or sad I’ll just never give a damn about him like he never did with us !

You have to remember that most people that watched the show was an English speaking audience, so they wouldn't have noticed the word; and I do know that the show is aimed at Hispanics and Latinos but I'm pretty sure most of the viewership was only English speakers.
There was one episode where George said "que la chinga" too. That one really surprised me as we've never heard anyone say the F word on a sitcom...at least as far as I know.

It really says something when this was the most emotional scene in the entire George Lopez series, meanwhile the most emotional scene in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was when Will's father walks out on him. This just goes to show how impactful it can be for a parent to leave.
This made me realize that if I ever have children I’ll always be there for them not turn tail and run for the hills even if I can’t stand his or her mother.

I mean, George was more than willing to search for his father, knowing full well that he had abandoned him, never made an attempt to have any kind of relationship, and never even supported him. But, when he finds out his father is rich, then suddenly he’s a bad man, with no redeeming qualities.

George had to look for his father because he found out from his aunt Cecilia that Benny was lying to him throughout his life about how Manny was dead. It was worse when George also found out that Manny and Benny had a daughter together that he never knew about.
