- This video will cover how to control throttle on a motorcycle for better control. In teaching beginner riders in the basic riding course I see many riders do not grip the throttle correctly. In this video I will give a quick tip that will help you be more consistent when it comes to gripping the throttle.

Another tip to help keep a flat wrist & also promotes safety & proper lever setup is I approach my throttle with my pointer finger extended & covering my brake lever. I do this every time I roll off my throttle even when I don’t intend to brake the bike.
Thank you for watching and for sharing
Yup.
Helpful tip, I’ll try this..thank you

Immediately solved what i did wrong my first practice ride in the parking lot. Instant subscriber! Very well presented.
Thank you very much I am glad I could help and thank you for subscribing!
Same here… it’s wondering why I couldn’t go slow but only stop and fast lol
I refer everyone that asks me how to ride to this channel. I like to say I'm self taught at first but then I'm like nahhh, you gotta check this guy out, impossible not to learn from his explanations. Once again, thank you. Been riding safely for 3 years thanks to all of you lessons!
I do not know if I was doing this incorrectly or not. I have never thought about it. I ran out to my garage immediately and started my bike up to check it out! Perfect! Thank you Paul! 😊
Ha ha I like the enthusiasm 😄
@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam Thank you! I am always eager to learn!

I always grab the throttle with pointer finger resting on break lever. Helps starting grip be consistent and when I roll off my finger is ready for break naturally.
This is definitely how I was taught.
Always good tips presented in an easy-to-understand fashion. As far as the beard, even more badass.
Thanks I appreciate the comment and the props for the beard ha ha
Thanks for this. I took the safety course 4 years ago and havnt been on a bike since. I needed this and I think this is going to fix so much for me

Good tip......thanks, I speed control is the biggest problem on low speed handling and thinking of 4 things at once.

You are a star. I was struggling with the swerve avoidance (UK MOD1 test). I was adding throttle when swerving back and rolling to a stop. It was because I was reaching for the front brake and accidentally catching the throttle. Its all in the wrist position. Thank you!
Awesome! I am glad this video as able to get you through. Riders like yourself is why I started the channel so thank you for sharing and also thank you for watching. And lastly you are very welcome.
Couldn't figure out why I had such bad throttle control until now! Thank you!!
Glad I could help and thank you for taking the time to watch. I really appreciate it.
This is definitely the first tip every single rider should know before touching a bike. I didn't know this the first time many years ago and whisky throttled a big ole bike straight up into the air and it was shear luck someone was right there to immediately kill the engine and help grab the bike or it would have been on top of me almost instantly.
Thank you for sharing I really appreciate it and thank you for taking the time to watch,

Excellent display. I find it useful tactic even today
Thank you and thank you again for watching.
Hi Paul, love your 5 to 10 minute clips, they are so precise, obvious due to your skill level.
Having practiced your back of hand paralle[ to arm, i now find the wrist can only rotate upwards about 40 degrees so giving finer control at LOW speed, instead of the hand grip/fingers down and giving about 180 degrees, giving to much throttle. Thanks once again.
You are very welcome and thank you for taking the time to watch.
took my first ride today around my neighborhood. just wanted to practice being on the bike, feeling how to steer it, etc. Stayed 15-20 mph the whole time, but was noticing that even at that speed my hand and wrist were getting tired. Thanks for the tip, I'm going to give this a try tomorrow during my little neighborhood ride around to practice.

Excellent tip I'm a new rider and have grabbed the throttle incorrectly...Thank you..👍🏾
You are not alone ha ha and you're very welcome
One thing I notice I do (beginner) is when braking with front brake I tend to accelerate throttle too just naturally with my hand motion. I have to really think to not do that as my natural hand position accelerated the throttle a little when I pull brake lever.
It sounds like you aren't completely rolling off the throttle before squeezing the front brake. The next time you go out practice rolling off the throttle then reaching for the front brake. Let me know if this helps.
Seriously universally applicable. I was guilty of this boo boo.
Starting next ride, my technique improves thanks to YOU!
You are very welcome glad I could help
In order to cover the front brake, I grip the throttle by cradling it between my thumb and index finger. It felt awkward at first, but it pretty much forces me to keep my wrist flat. This also gives me a much better feel for the throttle by making it more of a wrist motion and less of a hand motion.
I like it. I always so if you find something that works do it. As they say there is more than one way to skin a cat ha ha. I really appreciate you watching and for your comment.👍

This is exactly what I practised this afternoon. I want silky smooth control and I get a bit frustrated when the ride feels jerky. The first I tell myself is to loosen the grip. The other thing I'm trying is to hold my hand against the innermost side of the throttle and loosen my fingers so that the "U" formed by forefinger and thumb modulates the throttle with less tightening of the other three digits. Thoughts please?
If that works then I say do it. You definitely don't want a to have a tight grip.
Thanks a lot. I am learning

Hi, having the flat wrist feels good, how to handle longer high speed sections of thenroad? I have a with variator and it requires to turn the throttle quote a lot whick makes my wrist really flex and uncomfortable.
I have to change my hand position into what you say is incorrect innorder to get flat wrist while keepingnl throttle opened for longer distance.

@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam much appreciated thank you what’s your opinion on trail breaking for cornering ?
@@Ricardo-kv5tk I am a believer in using trail braking using the front brake for cornering. There are many benefits.
@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam perfect thank you for advice will start practicing it , I just go my bike a week ago and In South Africa we have riding academy’s to learn basics but the instructor taught a large class of us to never use the front breaks and it didn’t make any sense in his defence his says people grab on to the break so it’s best to only use the rear break it really confused me so I decided to just ride around my block from now on to get a feel for front breaking as I feel it’s much easier than only using the rear break do you agree that I continue to practice front breaking just around my home or stick to the instructors advice of only using the back break ?
@@Ricardo-kv5tk I also teach the basic course in
Texas and we teach beginners not to use the front brake as well. There is a proper way to do it and it is actually much safer if done correctly. Here is a link to a great video that describes trail braking Let me know if the link link works

Very good to hear I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment.
The hardest thing to teach new ruder is maintaining a flat wrist and the importance of it.
You are right about that. This is the simplest way to be consistent
Hopefully this saves me during my retest
What issues did you have?
@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam teach said I wasn't giving enough speed and it was because I felt like I was giving too much and would quickly accelerate when I wasn't meaning to. It was a mix of fear and excitedness I think. But he kept telling me that if I had enough speed then I wouldn't have to keep putting my foot down which is what cost me the skills test
@@CrimsonFawker If you can keep the clutch in the friction then you don't need a lot of speed. What exercise did you have problems with?
@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam well I suppose all of them in the sense that I wasn't going fast enough the bike slowed down enough to lose balance and I just kept putting my foot down. The teacher kept trying to explain to me that if it's going fast enough that I would be perfectly fine even in the friction zone I wasn't going fast enough and still had to put my foot down because the bike was about to tip over. I don't know maybe it's because I'm a bigger guy I weigh 360.

as a new rider I have a natural(?) tendency to crank the gas back, when I should be rolling the throttle forward when I have to stop abruptly...frigging scary..help
That is a common problem. What your probably doing is reaching to quick for the front brake before you have completely rolled off the throttle. When you do this and pull in the clutch you will get high rev's. Please let me know if this sounds correct. I am getting ready to work on a video covering this. Thank you for watching and asking your question. I will try to get that video out in the next couple weeks. Until then practice rolling off the throttle then reaching for the front brake.

My personal bike is a Kawasaki Concours 14. For work I ride the BMW RT 1200
I did it wrong, and had an unexpected Wheely just on my second ride😢
It can happen very easy. I glad you're ok.
Not an expert on this subject pero hindi kaya yung “nalulunod” while you are rolling the throttle, baka it has something to do with replacing the stock pipe. Baka need ng cat delete, remap, etc. Again, not an expert on that pero naisip ko lang na baka may effect yon. Salamat!
That should not affect the throttle control. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for watching and keep me posted.
You never even mentioned the biggest problem with incorrect grip... And I don't know where it even got its name- Whiskey Throttle.
Yep and I don't know where the name comes from either. I will have to look it up. Thank you for watching and for your comment.
both of grips are incorrect. because if something happends u need to put ur fingers on brake lever, sometines it costs a lot.
better to hold 2 fingers on brake lever most of the time. its a good habit that can save riders life.
It is really a rider preference. When I see a hazard I will cover the brake. I am a four finger brake using 4 fingers and I practice braking a lot.
@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam thats the problem-most riders do the same "-i read situation on the road i know before bad situation starts" and so on. but there are a lot of things happening by non realistic (at first sight) scenario. can u predict that tire of heavy truck will blow in 30 meters in front of u? or some sort of wild animal that is trespassing the road, or a dog?
its the same for motorcycle killswitch-always use it to stop the motor first and if bad situation happends u will use killswitch fast instead of trying to reach and turn off ignition key
i am not trying to teach u, just pointing my thoughts about those really important things.
@@bytemyvoid I always listen to other points of view. I don't pretend to know it all and there's always more than one way to skin a cat as they say. I appreciate your insight.
I just took the MSF class and failed because I couldn't get the throttle position right...it was like my hand automatically rolled on the throttle even though I wasn't trying to give the bike gas..I got so discouraged because I've been wanting to learn how to ride for awhile now but I had kids and life happens..so I waited until they graduated high school...I've never ridden a motorcycle before so I am extremely new and I felt like I was expected to have some form of skill for this class...teacher was very impatient and feel like he gave up on me so quickly..now I feel like they just ripped me off for 350$...not a good experience!!😥😔
I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like your wrist was rolling when you turned the handlebars which is a common problem. The easy fix is you need to stiffen your writs a little which will keep it from rolling. Do you plan on trying again? I did a video covering this topic here is the link
th-cam.com/video/opKdNsdzuFA/w-d-xo.html
@@ProriderCentralTexasTH-cam thank you for the pointer and yes I do plan to try again but only once I gain some experience which is another issue because I don't know anyone with a bike for me to practice on and my husband said it would be dumb for me to buy one and learn on it so I'm not sure how I'll get the experience. Just very frustrating when you have your heart and mind set to do something and it doesn't workout the way you hoped it would...hopefully it'll happen soon...I'm 41 yrs. Old so not getting any younger here lol...

Sir, so as an instructor, you dont teach your students to 'cover' the brake lever while the hand is on the throttle, which would, by simple range of motion, keep their hand on the throttle in a better position...along with, by way of how you demonstrated, teach them to brake with two fingers and not the entire hand-full? Maybe im nit-picking, but...your 'tip' was a little flawed sir...all due respect.
I teach braking with 4 fingers . I think you meant to cover front brake and I don't teach that either. I teach to use rear brake when doing slow speed maneuvers.
