My CODEOFBELL X-POD Modifications!

  • when I first got this sling, I liked it but couldn't quite figure out how to use it in a way that worked for me. Over the weeks, I gradually modified it to the point where it is now my favorite sling bag ever. So I thought I'd share what I did in order to improve the functionality (and in my opinion, appearance) of this great little bag.

    You may have noticed that at certain points in the video I ignored the middle zipper. Kinda dumb of me. I got so used to that zipper being hidden due to not needing to use it with the way my bag is configured that I basically forgot about it. That middle zipper isn't covered up by the compression straps, so technically all pockets are accessible no matter the configuration. My main issue which led me to modify the bag is A) aesthetic -- I just didn't like how the bag looked with 3 zippers plus compression straps, and B), the question of what to do with the compression straps once the bag is in expanded mode--it just seemed annoying to remove and put bag those straps every time I wanted to change my load out.
    As mentioned, the removal of the compression straps (and the loops that hold them) was the modification I hesitated most about, and I'm very happy with the cleaner look and find that it actually improves usability. However, if you're unsure if you want to do that, you can always just remove the straps and keep the loops just in case, and see how you like it.

    Thanks for the video! I just got my X-Pod II today, and the compression strap attachment points have been moved so they don’t obstruct the zipper.

  • @mweilmuenster
    @mweilmuenster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I like all of the ideas except one. I also removed the compression straps, they do nothing for me either. However, if you have the front flap down, you essentially have two pockets accessible from the top because of the fold. I always keep the side compression straps tight, that is all you need to hold that pocket in place if you do not open it. I keep a water bottle on one side of the flap, and usually my wallet on the other (a 10" tall bottle fits in either "pocket" with no issues at all.) It never moves because of the tension coming from the sides, even hanging up. I use the organizer pocket for things like headphones, etc.
    When you fold the bottom up, you are only using half of the available space, because the fold is underneath. Ir if you really fill it up you have to reach down and then under the bag. To me, it looks just as clean and minimal in the "stock configuration" as long as the front compression straps are not on the bag.
    Either way, great video!

    • @CarryQuandaries
      @CarryQuandaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried it again with the flap facing down, and I just can’t get it to look good. It just feels and looks awkward to me. Maybe it works better for you because it seems like your standard load out is more substantial than mine. I usually pack a smaller load out, so I actually like that the fold is tucked away, thus streamlining the bag and making it look more “fanny pack” like. However, if I do need more space, I simply tug a little at the inner side of the main zipper, which instantly grabs that fold and makes more room from the top and allows me to put bulkier things inside (it just changes the position of the zipper slightly-from being at the top to being on the upper part of the front).
      In regards to the fold creating more organization-I personally find the pockets in the back to be sufficient for organization and prefer a “bucket” for all my bulkier items, but I can see it working nicely depending on your preference. This is what I love about this bag, ten people can own it with each person wearing/configuring it slightly differently!
      Cheers and thanks for watching! 🤙🏽

    A lot of people, myself included, prefer their sling to sit way below the chest level. Similar to how you'd wear a messenger bag, hence the extra space on shoulder straps. Short straps is actually the reason I had to return the bellroy sling.

    I bought one but found it too small for me. If they ever make a bigger version i will buy one. I loved the way the zippers were awesome from the beginning. I use Cote & Ciel Isaru L. Its a great sling but not even close to the xpod

    • @CarryQuandaries
      @CarryQuandaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the Isaru L discontinued? Couldn’t find it anywhere on their site…
      And yeah, the X Pod can hold a lot in its expanded mode, but is still ultimately a sling and better suited for smaller items…for me, the next step up is the Billingham Hadley Small, a hand-made heritage style shoulder bag that is a perfect size for my camera and a 1L Nalgene. Anything larger than that and a backpack makes more sense to me.

    • @CarryQuandaries
      @CarryQuandaries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t count on it. In fact, i’m not even sure they believe it is a problem at all. Also, if your goal is to hold an item, then the way it is currently might actually work for you. I’d recommend just buying one and seeing how it goes. Hopefully it works out for you!

  • @5justinleach
    @5justinleach 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey not sure if this was mentioned or not. But with the flap folded upwards and not much in the large pocket. A standard 12 oz plastic water bottle fits very snug in the crease and doesn't fall out, when worn as a sling or fanny. And by crease I mean it's not actually inside a pocket, it is outside of the bag and held in place by tension. Also since there is excess material you don't really even see the water bottle either. This comment might only make sense if you own the bag and try it out haha.

    Code of Bell seems to adhere to the "techwear" aesthetic, which is all about extra straps flapping all over the place for no reason. Kids these days. (I could be wrong). And not that it matters, but "X" is pronounced "Cross" on Code of Bell bags. "Cross-pod" etc.
