One of the more curious facts about Japanese society is that it is culturally and ethnically homogenous, with over 98% of Japanese citizens being considered ethnic Japanese. And comparatively speaking, there is only a very small proportion of citizens who are either non-Japanese or have mixed Japanese blood, known as “hafus.” This creates both unique challenges and unexpected advantages. To understand better what they actually face, today we’re going to meet three “hafu” Japanese to discuss their experiences of living in Japan.

You can view it as double and teach your children to treasure their heritage as such. However, the word meaning "mixed-race" in the Japanese language is "hafu." There isn't a substitute you can use.

@@politelypompous6371 I heard somewhere that children of interracial couples often take the Japanese parent's last name/surname because it allows them to be recognized as Japanese citizens in different legal situations. It happened with Naomi Osaka, the famous tennis player, who is half Haitian (father) and half Japanese (mother). It makes things easier for the children when they are in school.

I'm a half in my 60s. Be proud of your roots, embrace your qualities and differences, become true world citizens. Learn many languages to be able to communicate with as many people as possible. Take the best of each culture and make it your own. Forget about political and racial divisions (the world seen from above has no such lines).
Much respect to Alicia. She barely knew the language, taking a Ph.D and battling cancer at the same time !! Wishing her much strength to overcome and defeat whater challenges life throws at her !

It literally broke my heart when he said he overheard his friends grandma saying " Why did you take that dirty kid to our house" I'm almost tearing up a little bit.
The hag that said that is the one who's dirty one like how could anyone say something like that about a kid when he's right there listening to you. I'm so glad he grew into such a nice chill man after experiencing such disgusting racism. As a Japanese, it makes me sick to my stomach when I hear stories like that. I hope Japanese will get more culturally educated and stop being racist towards people with diffrent skin colors.

My nephew is half japanese and half hispanic living in Japan. He gets called "foreigner" by kids at school from time to time and his reply is always "DUH".

I'm half-Japanese. I grew up in the US. As a kid I was called a lot of racial slurs. When I was 10, I visited Japan for the summer. The kids there called me gaijin. It's hard as a kid being treated like you don't belong in the countries of your parents.

I'm a half Egyptian, half Spaniard with an American accent who grew up in Egypt, so I resonate with this video on another level lol. The whole I don't belong to country A and I don't belong to country B thing is so relatable, you have no idea. I come to America, "you're the Egyptian kid, right?" I'm in Egypt, "You're the Spanish-American kid, right?"
Yesss these people explained my feelings growing up so well, really related to this entire video. I’m half Moroccan 🇲🇦 and half Welsh 🏴 and was born and raised in England 🏴 everywhere I go it seems like I am a foreigner. But I wouldn’t change any of my ethnic backgrounds, I’m so proud of it

I’m a half Japanese half white teenager living in the US.
I really agree with the identity crisis thing, in the us I get treated as an Asian (this one time I was out with my dad that’s white a woman came up to me and asked him if I was adopted) but when I go to Japan, I immediately get treated like a foreigner, even though I’m also deeply connected to my Japanese roots...
Hopefully as more and more halfs are born, people will become more used to half raced people :)

But I don't quite understand what you mean; can you explain why you say not everyone deserves to be loved at all times? I think everyone deserves to be loved no matter what; it goes along with the "treat others like you want to be treated" thing. @@yayawen3352 I know not many are going to see this comment, but I sort of having the same experience and I have some worries which are growing. I am ethnically Chinese but mostly grew up in Sweden, with new statistics like 70% of Swedes having a negative attitude about Chinese people (2019 statistics from report) and the escalating political tension as well as Chinese people getting news from the government that Swedes are making fun of China (SVT incident+tourist incident) and lastly the coronavirus outbreak. Living in Sweden is especially tough right now and it's hard to find strangers who will be kind and not judge me on the superficial.

I love what the korean japanese guy says about being a bridge between 2 cultures, i think that's a gift only someone who is a mixed race can bring to this world and that! is a gift our world very much needs! Better understanding and awareness of each other's cultures and a celebration of both worlds, being mixed should be a celebration of life and the diversity we have, it should never be looked down on, its a shame some people stay small minded and dont care to engage with people as they are. I'm half Japanese and half Italian too, my grandparents from both of the sides didn't approve my parents relationship (specially from my dad side who is Italian), but they fought for their love and turned their 27th year of marriage recently. I'm proud of my parents and proud of who I am ❤️
I have italian too but reality I just care about who I am as a person, not my race or ethnicity. Reality yourself should be the deciding factor, not being mixed race.

The format was good also the good comments and perspective of the interviewees was pretty engaging.
I really enjoyed the conversation for its openness and subject matter. It’s nice to learn and understand from others, I can definitely empathise with the guests.

I'm surprised people in the Bahamas will call him Asian boy, he does have Asian features but I would never think he would half Japanese, the majority of the Carribean is mixed anyway and some black people have Asian/Hispanic features.
I don't believe it. I've been to the Bahamas they're a lot of mixed race there, maybe he is referring to people (family who know of his Asian background).
His first and last name kinda makes him stand out more than his features, that alone will cause people to ask why and the answer will create the unnecessary attitude he receives.

I had a colleague who also took his mum's surname. His mum is the family's only descendant and so the mum's family requested that the child take on their surname to "continue the family name".

Also, after watching this video, I wanted to clear up one thing: I realized that my wording about my comment about my Italian side was not what I intended (nerves definitely got the best of me lol)
I was trying to refer to the fact that Italy also has a long history (similar to Japan), which is why we have Italian pride (in a good way) NOT that it’s not welcoming to other cultures 😅
My family just happened to be more on the closed minded side. I’m very proud of both my Italian and Japanese side and I’m sorry if I offended anyone 😭🙏

These guys are wonderful kids. It doesn't matter.Their Parents did not let someone stop them for who they love. So long as you treat people with love and respect. Just talking with them show the humanity in people.

I relate to this with my brother. He's half colombian/chinese and I'm Colombian/canadian and we have been asked so many times "how long have you been together" and my brother would jokingly reply "oh I mean, I changed her diapers so..." Their looks of horror, confusion and embarrassment are totally priceless.
Same with my dad, he was very young when I was born and we look nothing alike and I had a LOT of people assume he was my boyfriend. It was extremely awkward for teenage me
That's so awful. It happened a few times with me. We're all brazilians and here all people are mixed, really, so we have all the races you can think of. But my dad is half german and my mom "fully" brazilian, she has the "latina" appearance. Where we used to live in it wasn't usual to see someone as blond as my father and in all my teenager years I've experienced people thinking I somehow was dating my dad when we were out alone.

I don't know if it'd be really *baiting,* ...I get the idea a number of Japanese people are trying to get better in English, so they might just have the idea of 'try to speak English as much as possible' in mind. I suppose maybe you could just keep replying in Japanese and maybe compliment them on their English.

That‘s not just a Japanese thing though. I once visited France with my ex and we experienced pretty much the same thing. And we aren’t even native English speakers.

I'm half Japanese and half American. My mom is Japanese and really loved metal rock music and bands from the US and Germany and other foreign places. Apparently she met my dad at a rock concert in the US which I think is kinda cool-

Why r people even replying to me. Some of them don’t make sense, as a reply to what I commented. I’m Japanese and I’ve seen fluent / non fluent Japanese and Koreans, but of course I feel uncomfortable saying broadly “Japanese/Korean do/don’t speak English”. I just genuinely thought that it was cool he spoke a foreign language since I myself is facing the difficulties of that ( I study German).
Just wanted to make my comment clear.
If he grew up in Japan he wouldn't be able to speak in English at all. Good choice.
あ many people in Korea speak really good English! At least that’s the impression that I get. Compared to here in Japan, Koreans are great at English.

@@dingliu6302 Jeju definitely. really I think places outside of Seoul and maybe Busan tend to be harder for foreigners to visit if they don't speak Korean. I can speak Korean decently so it's not really a problem for me but I always have to translate for my other foreign friends when we would visit places outside of Seoul.

I think Asian Boss is going downhill. I remember when they use to talk about actual issues in the Asian countries. Now they just talk about socialist standpoints. This is not what the Japanese people think about. So I don't know why Asian Boss is trying to make this a issue.

I guess so. I don't know why Asian Boss has changed their viewpoints so heavily. I understand being interested in other viewpoints but focusing on racism and other socialist talking points. That doesn't seem right to me. I think Asain Boss has focused less on trying to inform people on what is happening in Asia and more about trying to change people in Asia.
I love how polite they are when asking/answering possibly delicate questions, but still go on and ask/answer them!!

As a half Japanese half British person, I loved this interview so much! I can totally relate to the whole identity crisis thing, I feel Japanese in Britain and British in Japan. In my primary school in Japan the teachers told me to speak in American English in my elementary/primary school (I got pretty angry when the teacher told me that my pronunciation of "zebra" was wrong since it's different for Britain & America) and people at my school in Britain have asked me if I was Chinese as well. The head movement thing when speaking Japanese is so true as well!

This is how I feel. I was lucky to grow up with a half Japanese friend in Italy.
Also I never felt confident in my skin cause beauty standards are quite homogeneous. I have thick thighs and things like that.

I'm surprised there aren't any Japanese subtitles for this. I'm sure a lot of Japanese would be interested in watching this since a lot of what they talk about is about their experiences there.. Interviews like this can really help bridge the gap and having subtitles can really help here.

This was such a great interview. I watched the documentary about Halfu too, which came out a few years ago. It kind of breaks my heart to hear some of these stories. I really understand these young people. I'm much older than them but I guess they still struggle with being half. I'm half Korean and half American. I live in the US on the east coast, but have visited Korea several times to see family. They are very accepting of me there as far as I can tell. Being half has it's challenges. I'm a little surprised with the racism the Italian experienced in Hawaii. I thought that there was a large population of Japanese there. I grew up in the South but in a city with a large military base. Many of my friends were half Korean because our mothers were friends. I don't recall experiencing that much racism but I can pass for hispanic or some other race, even Persian for some reason. I feel for all the other halfs out there wherever you are! I agreed with so much of what they said. There are challenges but I embrace my Korean side even though I'm never seen as Korean whether in the US or in South Korea. I hope that we continue to grow in how we treat people and embrace their differences. This was such a great interview. And the half Korean was right. They did do something here. They really opened up and honestly talked about their experiences, which helps other people like us and maybe it helps others to understand what it's like to be mixed race. I struggle sometimes with even saying oh I'm half American, or is it white or caucasian or West Virginian. I do feel isolated though. I have isolated myself from my mother more since my father passed away and from my family in Korea and I have no other family in the US. I live alone. And COVID really adds to that isolation. To be honest, I wish I understood my mother more. So I binge watch Korean dramas and movies, looking for some understanding of the culture I'm so disconnected from, living here in the US. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that.
Reach out. Go there as simply a tourist and learn. Go heal your heart

I'm from Argentina. My dad used to be a taxi driver. He charged like double price for foreigners, specially non-latins, since they knew nothing about the prices and they didn't feel like they were paying too much because our currency is pretty devaluated from dollars, euro etc. I think it happens in many places in the world

In the Philippines, there are a lot of dialects and you visit a certain place and can't speak theirs, they'd know you are not from there so they hike prices. It's not just about being a foreigner but being a human scum. Of course only few does that.
